Gorselands is an exceptional care home. The owner and staff have gone above and beyond for my mum. Residents are treated with kindness and respect in beautiful surroundings. There is good food, activities provided and individual care and attention given, by a team of warm dedicated staff. A family feel
pervades this lovely residential home and nothing is too much trouble.

My mum settled quickly into Gorselands care after her dementia took hold to the extent she was no longer safe living alone at home, with my daily support and carers popping in. She was assigned a room on the first floor, but when she became unsettled at night the staff flagged her need to be on the
ground floor, she relocated, but she remained unsettled at night and again she was flagged and moved once more. She is now really happy and settled in her 3rd and ground-floor room. The management and staff are excellent at meeting Mum's and other residents' daily needs. We are encouraged to visit regularly and are always greeted warmly. The home is really a 'home from home' and Mum is really happy here, and occasionally refers to the home as her 'club'
My mother-in-law, now deceased, spent 2.5 years in an unrelated care home, and her/our experience fell far short of the high standards maintained daily at Gorselands, if only we had known of this care home a few years earlier!

I've previously reviewed Gorselands and given them a 5 out of 5, this view has not in any way changed and if I could I would give them many more! My Nan who has been at Gorselands for over a year has unfortunately passed away today. The compassion and care shown by the staff at Gorselands cannot be
underestimated and I don't have the words to explain how grateful I am for everything they did for my Nan and my family, the staff couldn't have done more. The excellent care my Nan got is clearly driven from the top down and fully embraced by all who work there creating a peaceful, affectionate, attentive, clean place for your loved ones, I couldn't recommend them more highly.

Reply from Lesley Spiller, Proprietor at Gorselands Care Home

Thank you so much for your lovely words. It really was a joy to look after your Nan and we have many fond memories. We are so pleased that we were able to offer what you were looking for as a family and what your Nan truly needed; to ensure she was always surrounded by love, that she felt cared for, safe and importantly recognised Gorselands as her home. It was a real pleasure and your Nan will be missed. Thank you.

The staff at Gorselands have treated my mother with great care and respect during her 3 month stay. The set up is very professional, while still maintaining a very friendly and homely environment specialising in dementia care. My mother was always treated as a valued individual and the dignity she was
treated with in her last days was very comforting for us as a family. Thank you all so much.

My mum came to stay at Gorselands in November 2022. She wasn't the easiest resident, I was struck by how diligently the team at Gorselands worked with her to settle her in. They get to know the individual very well and tailor their approach. We were always made to feel very welcome and were always met
with a smile and a hello. The culture of Gorselands is very positive. Unfortunately Mum declined quickly as a consequence of her dementia, and in the summer of 2023, we moved to palliative care. Whenever I contacted Gorselands, the manager and the senior staff instantly knew of my Mum's latest situation, be it her health, medication, mood etc. In her final weeks, the support my Mum received (and we received) was exemplary. They attended to her every need, never slow to call in the community nurses if advice or agreement to a change in medication was required. I spent many hours sitting in my mum's room, and I could hear only fun, courtesy and respect for residents. It is a wonderful place.

My 96 year old mother has always been adamant that she would never ever go into a care home. The fact that she has settled quickly and happily into Gorselands Care Home is testament to the kindness, respect and individual attention shown by the lovely, welcoming staff. She now thinks that she's in a
luxury hotel!
Every aspect of care is excellent. The house is spotlessly clean and the gardens are well maintained and inviting. Residents have the freedom to explore them safely. The food is first class and beautifully presented. Dining is well organised so that meal times are sociable and relaxed. Medical issues are dealt with swiftly and family members are consulted and kept well informed. All staff are very professional and able to cater to all levels and types of Dementia. There are many activities for residents to enjoy if they choose to.
We, as a family, thoroughly recommend Gorselands and are so grateful to the staff that we can now finally relax having seen our mother settled and peaceful.

My mother has been at Gorselands Care Home for nine months now and I couldn’t be more impressed with the care she receives. When we first arrived I was struck by how clean and bright the home is, with airy, wide corridors and a feeling of peace and calm which was so important for Mum. She settled in
almost immediately which was totally unexpected and a huge relief. In all the time I’ve been visiting her I have never once heard raised voices or complaints being made. All the residents seem happy and content with many activities always on offer and lots of personal attention from the patient and caring staff. The food is superb, all homemade with fresh ingredients and it’s so uplifting to hear the ladies singing at the dinner table.
I am really comforted knowing that my mother is safe, happy and well looked after during her end-of-life care and trust the owners and staff implicitly. I would have no hesitation in recommending Gorselands Care Home to anyone having to make this difficult decision.

Gorselands Care Home is an excellent care home, which takes a splendid path through the difficult competing demands. For example, by being a large and extended family house it does not have the "clinical" feel of a purpose-built hospital-style dementia care home. Being truly family-run, there is a clear
sense of identity/leadership. All members of staff seem to be highly motivated and polite and caring to the residents. The environment seems to balance the security needed with a feeling of companionship and care. We are delighted with Goreslands for my 95-year-old mother with vascular dementia.

My mother has been cared for by the Gorselands team for nearly a year now. They understand the care she needs with her dementia and they provide a safe, caring and friendly place for her to live. Her family are able to visit, often at short notice, and also take mum out for lunch etc. The care team
are always available to take telephone calls or respond to emails and I've always found the staff very caring towards mum and also respectful towards her needs. Gorselands have helped us bring in mum's furniture, pictures and mementoes to make her room more homely. The location, grounds and house itself make visiting easy and a pleasure and the required gate security is reassuring without being troublesome. Mum's family feel fully assured that she's being cared for in a safe, friendly place.

Gorselands provides everything my mother needs to have a quality of life in her advancing years, including a great understanding of dementia and all of its implications. The house and gardens are beautiful, set in a tranquil location and secured via a locked gate which is opened and closed by staff.
The house is maintained to a very high standard. All areas are very clean and bright and the bedrooms are very comfortable and cosy. I cannot speak highly enough of the staff who take great care of the residents and for whom nothing is too much trouble. The food is prepared daily with fresh ingredients and there are home-baked cakes which my mother particularly enjoys. There are regular activities organised which the residents can choose to attend. The staff are accommodating and I can call my mother regularly by phone/Skype. I am fortunate to have found Gorselands. I know that my mother is safe and very well looked after and this gives me enormous peace of mind.

My sister moved into Gorselands a year ago. She was discharged from the hospital having had a fall at home after her husband died. She has Alzheimer’s disease and cracked the lower two vertebrae in her back in the fall. Gorselands have worked tirelessly, in conjunction with the GP practice, to find
the right level of pain relief for my sister and she is now a completely different person from the one I collected from the hospital a year ago. She is settled and communicative and Gorselands have encouraged my sister to walk as much as possible so as to recover the strength in her legs and her back. Gorselands is an exceptionally clean and well-maintained home with staff who are truly friendly, helpful, caring and cheerful. There are lovely secure garden areas where residents are free to roam. There are never the tell-tale odours that I have experienced in other care homes. In summary, I cannot recommend Gorselands highly enough as a safe and caring place to have a loved one stay.

My Mum has vascular dementia and has been at Gorselands since March. From day 1 she has been very happy here. The home is very secure, spotlessly clean and the home-cooked meals are superb. All the residents are treated with respect and it was good to see Mum dancing to the regular music sessions that
they hold. The home has managed the COVID situation well and protected all its residents. I would have no hesitation in recommending this home to anyone.

After visiting many care homes for mum I found Gorselands and the first thing that struck me as I entered was the laughter and singing coming from one of the lounges. The residents were happy and engaged, there was an excellent staff to resident ratio and this along with the immaculately presented communal
areas and rooms made it obvious to me that this was the only care home for Mum. 2020/21has been a difficult time for everyone but it is reassuring to witness during covid safe visits, video and phone calls that the safety, love and care continues and Mum is happy in her new home.

My Mum moved to Gorselands in September 2017 and I cannot thank all the staff enough for the excellent care that my mum has always received. 2020 has been a tough year for everyone, I miss visiting my Mum because of Covid restrictions, and I miss seeing the staff who are so kind and thoughtful and have
also become my friends. I know my Mum is happy here, she always looks clean and tidy (one of the carers will even have taken time to plait her hair) and she enjoys the home-cooked meals. The home itself is spotless and always smells fresh. I'm always kept informed of any health or medical changes or additional needs. Over the years I have spent many hours visiting, sometimes sitting quietly in a cosy armchair, sometimes joining in with numerous activities but always made to feel welcome in my second home. I'm looking forward to spending time again in the lovely safe gardens, wandering with Mum along the pathways or sitting peacefully in the garden chairs enjoying the sunshine.

It was hard to hand over Mum's care and difficult for her to give up independent living but the staff at Gorselands make this move as gentle and affirming as possible. The home is kept to an extremely high standard with caring and cheerful staff and a beautiful garden to which the residents have free

My Mum has been a resident for two years, the last 10 months have been during the Covid-19 pandemic. The staff including non-care staff are incredibly kind and patient with residents and have a genuine affection for my Mum. There is always a very relaxed and happy atmosphere inside and the residents
seem content and settled. They are given as much freedom as possible and are able to walk around the building and the gardens or spend time in their rooms as they wish. The gardens, building and decor are immaculate, finished to the highest standard and very well maintained. It is a home rather than an institutional facility. During the early months of the pandemic, we were unable to visit Mum but the staff encouraged us to ring and Skype as often as we wished. Since restrictions have been lifted they have done everything they can to allow us to visit. When we did see her face to face again she was happy and well. It has been an incredible comfort to know she is safe and content there.

My mother has lived at Gorselands for over two years. During this time she has consistently received excellent care from all the staff. They are warm, caring and empathetic and have got to know my mother very well. She is treated with respect and kindness and I am regularly informed about any changes
or problems. The home is always spotlessly clean, light and homely. The gardens are easily accessible for the residents to use when they wish and are beautifully kept and laid out. The food is home-cooked and varied and always looks and smells wonderful! We have been involved with Gorselands for many years as we have had other family and friends resident there. I would not hesitate to recommend it and feel truly happy that my mother is able to live there and be cared for so well.

I searched and searched for a care home for my mum and it wasn't until I walked through the door of Gorselands that I knew I had found the right one. Gorselands is a lovely small family home, with many of the staff and carers having worked there for many years. Everyone is always smiling, positive and
willing to go that extra mile to help both the resident and the family. It is well run and spotlessly clean with delicious meals. My Mum's room is a single en-suite with gorgeous views over the garden and beyond to the channel. Visitors are welcome at any time and they have managed this well throughout covid. There are many varied activities which residents may choose to take part in. I am confident my mum is happy and well cared for. I couldn't recommend Gorselands highly enough.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.769)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.769) out of 10 for Gorselands Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.969 for Gorselands Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (93 Excellents x 5) + (3 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 96 Ratings = 4.969

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Gorselands Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
