Rose Lodge Care Home offers specialist dementia care in Exmouth and has two small communities (around 16 residents in each) for people living with dementia.

The cottage is designed for people with early to mid-stage dementia and the lodge is designed for people with mid to late-stage dementia.

The two communities have a similar look and feel, to ease any moves between the communities. The home's design and decoration support independence and encourage active and sociable lives. Rose Lodge has generous terraces and gardens which residents are encouraged to use.

By having two communities on the same site, Rose Lodge ensure that residents live with people at a similar stage of dementia and this increases well-being and minimises friction between residents. Two activity programmes are tailored to the specific needs of each community.

Living an active and sociable life is essential to the resident's well-being. Activities at Rose Lodge include daily walks and trips in the minibus, weekly fitness classes, dancing, choir, music, arts and crafts, gardening and looking after pets which include a dog, cats, a rabbit, chickens, fish and doves. Resident's pets can usually be accommodated.

Rose Lodge received an outstanding rating from the Care Quality Commission in 2019, a gold award from Sterling University's Dementia Centre for the design of the cottage in 2016. Rose Lodge has been featured in the Journal of Dementia Care in April 2013 and Devon Life in 2017-2019.

The team at Rose Lodge know how difficult the decision can be to move to a care home. To ease this transition, they offer daycare where people can join the community for one or more days a week, befriend the residents, and join in the daily activity programme. Respite care is also offered, subject to room availability.

From experience of single days respite and the recent 10 days for my wife, I know well the warmth and care from a very dedicated staff. I have always found a calm atmosphere, where individual attention ensures that every resident feels part of the family, also a professional awareness, with humour,
is always apparent! Cleanliness and good facilities make for an all round, well run and comfortable nursing home.

Mum moved from one home to Rose Lodge when her condition deteriorated. She receives more care now due to her circumstances and my sister or myself are quickly contacted if there are any concerns. We can discuss any issues with the staff who act accordingly. Mum has never been on one demand attention
but staff find time to chat with her or take her out in her wheelchair weather permitting. She has her hair and nails done regularly and her room is kept clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and caring and welcoming to family and friends who visit. We are confident that mum is being well cared for.

My mother, who has dementia, did not find the transition to residential care easy but the Rose Lodge staff were patient and kind and she is now settled. They keep the atmosphere calm and provide a variety of activities and trips out to the seaside etc. The garden is well used and very important for
my mother. Above all, I appreciate the sense of fun that staff show in dealing with the residents.

This was the first time of visiting Dad since he went into Rose Lodge and we found the staff and the atmosphere to be very welcoming and friendly.
Dad has his good days and bad but the care he receives is constant. It is nice to be able to visit when you want and for as long as you want.

I find the staff really helpful and really caring. I visited many homes with a district and practice nurse and would have been happy for my parents to come to this home. They are patient and understanding of her condition.

The staff at Rose Lodge are amazing. They treat my relative with respect and give lots of time talking to her and patiently answering her questions. The staff are also very welcoming and supportive of me, as visiting isn't always easy. Rose Lodge gives me peace of mind.

I looked for the best-rated care home I could find, reading reviews and making visits. Rose Lodge stood out head and shoulders of all the others. My sister was happy there and the standard of care was 5*. One particular feature is that the staff tend to be long-term employees and do not change every
five minutes. They are also mature and sensible, a really good team. On entering Rose Lodge over the years I have never found an objectionable or unhealthy smell such as pervades some care homes. The activities are many and varied, something for everyone. I cannot fault the care given to my sister right up until her death in December. Everything was handled with delicacy and consideration, for the resident and for relatives.

My cousin has been at Rose Lodge for two years. She moved from a home in Essex which did not suit her needs and has from the start enjoyed life at Rose Lodge. I remember visiting her just after she arrived and she had been out to walk along the seafront, "I'm on holiday" she said. She still enjoys trips
out, especially to musicals at the Pavilion. There are daily activities at Rose Lodge. She enjoys the musical entertainers and doing jigsaw puzzles. When she was able she was encouraged to help serve snacks or wash up in the cottage but now has moved back to the main lodge for extra care.


I find the staff caring and helpful. I can let myself in (using the code) and visit when I wish. Staff will bring us coffee and move my cousin to a private spot if necessary. If there is a problem, such as a need to call the nurse or doctor, I am phoned and informed. Care plans are regularly updated and available on request. I have seen many care homes. This one is the best.

A very caring home, a good atmosphere, always something good going on. The staff are quick to respond to any resident needing help, comfort or assistance. I like the fact that there is not a fast turnover of staff. I like the idea of having a good mix of staff, male - female, young men and women and
older staff too. Excellent housekeeping, excellent food (with no notice, quite often an invite to sit and eat with residents - so tried and tested). Excellent attention to detail - hairdressing etc.

Rose Lodge is such a unique place for people to live active lives. Care is excellent. Staff are fantastic. It feels so homely and the staff are always happy and smiling. The gardens are created to keep people interested and busy and it feels like a mini zoo with dog, cats, doves, fish, rabbit and chickens!
It is wonderful to see people always out for walks, trips or in the garden and in the good weather people spend most time outside. There is always something going on and it always feels good to be there.

A wonderful place to live, the staff are so kind, nothing is too much trouble. Everything is done with love and consideration for the residents and their families. My brother has been there for three years and I cannot praise the management and staff enough.

Rose Lodge specialises in dementia cases. They are extremely adept at treating their residents with dignity and respect. There is a lot of humour too. The home has a friendly atmosphere and the gardens are always available to the residents and they have sensory plants etc and a fish pond. They also

My mother has vascular dementia which means she usually cannot remember what she was doing even an hour previously. At Rose Lodge, she is living in a very friendly, lively social environment where staff genuinely appear to enjoy the company of the residents and where social, creative activities visiting
artists and musicians as well as regular parties, quizzes and events help to make residents families feel really welcome. I have a long commute but look forward to visiting my mum at the end of the day because of the very positive atmosphere and the level of care and interest shown all of the staff.

My wife has been here for 5 months, I have Motor Neurone Disease.
Rose Lodge even provide me with lunch.
The care staff even help me to my car.,

My mother moved in to Rose Lodge 2 months ago and it has lived up to all our expectations. It really is an exceptional place. The staff are always bright and cheerful and obviously very caring.


What makes Rose Lodge stand out is the activities that residents are able to be involved in. There

is such a wide range of things on offer from art to quizzes, music, going out to skittles and walks on the nearby sea front. Residents have things to look forward to and are encouraged to continue their hobbies, or to try new activities. My mum knits and they keep an eye to ensure her wool and needles do not get lost as she finds knitting calming.


My mum is not the easiest person to please, but from the care to the food and the efforts made to make her feel comfortable we simply cannot fault it. The gardens are also superb. Real gardens with chickens and vegetables and lovely places to sit and to enjoy. Thank you to everyone at Rose Lodge.

How many people can look back at when their loved one had advanced stage dementia & be filled with happy memories? My lovely mother spent the last 2½ years of her life at Rose Lodge & the smile never left her face. It turned out to be such a joyous, fun end chapter to her life. To offer quality of life
at all stages of progressive dementia is the whole ethos of RL & Mum was always included even as she became less able. There, dementia is always respected & treated with dignity, courtesy & patience & they maintain the ability to see the person beneath the illness. They manage to turn dementia, an illness so often regarded & experienced in negative terms, into a happy, positive, meaningful experience. RL is known for their activities & outings and they make full use of their lovely garden at all times. They put so much into the lives of residents. Their parties are wonderful, for both residents & families, whether cream teas in the garden, summer BBQs, seasonal festivities. They instill a sense of fun into daily life & the constant smiles you see on residents’ faces are testament to this, & having animals around was such a constant joy to Mum. It is all about the here & now for dementia patients, & all the here & nows at RL are such good ones. Mum was always kept warm, well fed, well dressed, stimulated, one-to-one attention, & medical care the moment she needed it. They went beyond the call of duty so many times. It meant we never worried about Mum. The carers there are so special & Mum adored them all. For Mum to be surrounded by happy, smiley faces counted for everything. Their blog too deserves special mention & enables distant family members to be able to picture life at RL. It truly is a home in all senses of the word & I was always made to feel so welcome. Mum passed away comfy, pain-free, distress-free & relaxed till the end. No-one could protect Mum from dementia taking its inevitable course but she died with a smile on her face. That’s how it was at Rose Lodge.

Andrea lives in Exmouth, she has over 20 years of experience supporting people who are living with dementia.


Andrea has a BSc Hons Degree in Dementia Studies and an RMA L4. In 2019, Andrea completed an eight-day course in Birmingham with Meaningful Care Matters in the planning, design and facilitation of Dementia Care Learning and The Butterfly Project.


Andrea believes that each person has the right to live well, and this happens by putting their emotional needs at the centre of what Rose lodge does.


The people who live in our communities are our family; together we celebrate life, embracing the potential of the here and now, the beauty of the moment and sharing the daily ebb and flow of life.

Tracey Long

Tracey has worked at Rose Lodge since 2015. She began her journey as care for the Cottage community and has worked her way up to taking over as Registered Manager in 2021. Tracey has a Level 5 in Leadership in Health and Social Care Management and completed an eight-day course in Birmingham with Meaningful Care Matters in the planning, design and facilitation of Dementia Care Learning.


Tracey shares the same passion and beliefs as Andrea. She believes that everyone has the need to feel loved, valued, and heard and to have a reason to get up in the morning.


In each community, Tracey leads the team in living and working together. There are no barriers, no uniforms, drug trollies, routines or anything that creates a divide between us and our family members.
