There is always a caring atmosphere when you go into Kent House and the staff are very helpful. Nothing is too much trouble when you request extra care - like hair shampooing etc. I am always kept informed if there are any health problems.

My mother has been at Kent House for almost four years and is happy there. The staff are caring and attentive, as is the manager. They all do a great job.

My mother chose Kent House originally because of the position of the home, so close to the town and plenty to see, so it was very pleasing to find that the welcome she received was friendly and kind. The manager and staff were always very caring and when I and members of the family visited mum, we were
also made to feel welcome - nothing was too much trouble. My mother enjoyed the excellent food and there were always plenty of activities to keep her occupied. As a family, we can recommend Kent House for an elderly relative, they will be very well cared for.

My sister has been in two other care homes. The first one was short staffed. My sister stayed in her room, she was not happy there. She then went to the second care home which was far better. The downside was no bus service and I don't drive. She then came to Kent House which is excellent. The staff
are very caring. My sister is happy there and is looking well.

Staff are very helpful and caring. Because my mother is now in a wheelchair and sleeps quite often during the day. I think it is more difficult now to include her in all of the activities so she tends to be left out.

The staff are excellent. The building is old and not ideal but there seems to be an ongoing programme of maintenance. I accept my relative is probably difficult about having her room cleaned, but it needs a deep clean and more attention to detail. The garden is looking much better but a general spruce
up of the garden and building would do more justice to the good work the staff do.

I was very happy with the care and attention my mother received while I was away on holiday. The care home is well run and all the nursing staff are very caring and do all they can for the residents. There is always a very warm welcome when visiting.

I continue to be very happy about the way my aunt is cared for. Management and senior staff members have been in place since my aunt has been in residence, which is over eight years now.
This has provided continuity of care and given confidence that staff feel valued.
This also allows for better care
because these staff members have a better understanding of my aunt's long-term condition and requirements.
This also translates to junior and temporary staff.
I have no reason for concern during all the time I have visited the home.

The care and attention is first class. Mum is loved and cared for in every way.
We can visit at any time.
Mum has settled as much as is able. Nothing replaces 'home' but the care is second to none.

My mother has been a resident of Kent House for nearly 2 years and I am constantly amazed at the very high quality of care given by all the staff. All the staff treat her with unfailing patience and kindness, far beyond what could reasonably be expected.
Despite plenty of encouragement to participate
in the many activities, mum often chooses to spend most of the time in her room, staff are instantly alerted by the bell system if she leaves her room.
We are able to call in at any time, without an appointment, which is most helpful. Someone always comes to tell me how she has been since my last visit, without being asked. The manager is excellent, always professional, yet friendly, approachable and helpful.
My family and I are extremely pleased with the services my mother receives from all the staff at Kent House. It is a great relief to us that we have found somewhere as wonderful for my mother to get the care she needs.

Thank you Sheila for leaving what is a fantastic review of the experience that you, your family and your mum have had and continue to enjoy, of our Kent House Care Team and Care Home in Okehampton over the past 2 years.
It's always really nice to receive reviews such as these - not least as it provides welcome public recognition of the amazing job that our care teams do day in and day out at our care homes, on this occasion, that care home being Kent House. It's also great for people who may suddenly find themselves researching care homes (a subject about which most people know very little and often suddenly have to become experts) to be able to learn of the positive experiences of people already living in one. Again, thank you for posting such a great and detailed review, we often get reviews that say 'It's great here' (and we're very grateful for those of course) - yours goes that bit further and explains why - and, as we've always known, the reason why is always down to the hard work and caring of our care team members.

My husband has been at Kent House since November as overall I am happy with the care given. However, in my opinion, re safety/security there is not enough staff to cope with 25 residents! The needs of care vary but due to dementia residents need one to one care very often. Dementia is a demanding illness
and the staff at Kent House do a very good job indeed.

My mother has been a resident at Kent House for 2 years and feels safe and secure.
She is physically reasonably able and mentally fully capable and the staff encourage her to be independent and to go out into the town.
Visitors are always made welcome and the staff are kind and caring.
Kent House
enables my mother to remain in the local community.

Having the same carer/carers is a very good idea, almost like a one to one as carers and the residents become used to each other. Spending less time in their room if possible. My experience on the whole, is a good one. I am always kept informed of any illness, change of meds etc and wellbeing.

Generally, the home has a good atmosphere with personal care, help and also a named carer - so having a point of contact for the family. The majority of the time there appears to be encouragement with diet and fluids but they can stay in their rooms for days. Whilst I understand not everyone wants to
socialise, mobilising in the home or a bit of fresh air would be good.

Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at Kent House Care Home

Good morning MW - Thank you for taking the time to write and publish this review of your experiences with our Kent House Care Home in Okehampton. Whilst it's great to see that you would recommend the home we've also noted your feedback with regards to activities and cleanliness and will speak to the manager about this. I can offer that with regards to activities that Kent House does have a full schedule or internal, external and community-based activities that are focused on groups and individuals. Our residents social lives and involvement forms a significant aspect of their overall care packages and, as you say, some (for a variety of different reasons, from unable to unwilling) will not wish to take part in the communal ones - in which case we ensure people spend time with them in their rooms etc as per their wishes. The Registered Manager, holds regular resident and relative/friend meetings at Kent House and any suggestions such as yours would be great to be discussed as such meetings (or at any time with her as she will always be happy to meet with you). I hope this helps with a bit more information on the topics that you have raised. Kindest regards, Nathan.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.121)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.121) out of 10 for Kent House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.695 for Kent House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (43 Excellents x 5) + (14 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.695

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.426 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kent House Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 27 registered maximum number of service users is 5.4. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 5.4 = 0.926

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
