It's good to know mum is safe and being looked after well. The staff are helping her adapt to her new surroundings and encouraging her to take part in the activities available. They are very patient with her and treat her with respect and dignity.

Reply from Nathan Stone, Director at Kent House Care Home

Good morning SH - Many thanks for taking the time to write and publish this review of your experiences at our Kent House Care Home in Okehampton. It's great that your mum is settling in well and getting involved in the activities in the home. We have a great Care Team at Kent House, ably led by the manager and her deputy and it's nice to see them receiving public feedback such as this. Kindest regards, Nathan.

Since mums admittance to Kent House, I have always found her to have been well cared for. Always clean, tidy and dressed in her own clothes. During the last visit, I witnessed a carer feed mum her lunch which took an hour allowing mum time to digest her food without being rushed. I always drop in as
and when and mum will always be either in the lounge or conservatory fully dressed and clean and not been left alone in her room.

Mum's room is ok but one with easier access would have been better. The staff have all be kind and helpful.

I am quite happy with all I have seen except one thing. I think the personal washing could be improved on. I think perhaps a shower should be provided for those that are able to use one.

Very supportive and caring staff. Negotiating very difficult problems with my mother's care with professionalism and understanding. Very good on-site manager and works hard with liaising with other responsible carers.

Mum made the decision to move to residential care in April 2015. Fortunately Kent House had a suitable vacancy at that time. We cannot fault the care and kindness mum has been shown, it feels like a home from home and the staff are superb. Nothing is ever too much trouble and we, her family, feel confident
and reassured that mum is treated with dignity and respect. The manager employs an open door policy, so we know it is possible to talk through any concerns in an informal but professional way.

I think Kent House is a very caring and nurturing establishment for older people; their compassion towards those who suffer from dementia is quite heart-warming. Nothing appears to be too much trouble for the staff who have responded positively to any and all comments I have made in connection with
the health and emotional state of my relative.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.121)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.121) out of 10 for Kent House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.695 for Kent House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (43 Excellents x 5) + (14 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.695

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.426 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kent House Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 27 registered maximum number of service users is 5.4. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 5.4 = 0.926

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
