Over the last 18 months my mother has been very well looked after. I thank all the staff at The Lilacs (Exeter) for their dedication and support with the care they gave Mother in the last months of her life, and in particular the way they cared for her as the end was approaching. The Lilacs was well
run and it appeared that all the other clients were treated with care and respect.

The staff at this care home made a supreme effort to ensure my mum enjoyed her 100th birthday in July, decorating her room, making a special cake and marking the occasion with photos in their newsletter.
The staff at this home treat my mum with great patience and dignity and are very warm towards her.
A great deal of effort is made with her likes and dislikes. The home is not luxurious but it is warm and homely and there always seems to be something organised for the residents.

Hello Barbara F. Thank you so much for taking the time to write and publish this really lovely review of your experience, and most importantly that of your mum, with our care team and care home at The Lilacs. It's lovely to read that your mum enjoyed her 100th Birthday and that the team were able to join in celebrating with her. I note what you say 'the home is not luxurious' and I agree - in all of our care homes we work really hard to ensure that we create a home-from-home feeling - we don't have a cinema room or sauna etc. at The Lilacs - but we don't (well, most of us) have those at home. We have lovely people with a cosy lounge (with a big TV) and a lovely bathroom. I have noted that you have only scored us 3 for cleanliness - we would certainly want a 5 for that! Please let the home manager know if you have any concerns about cleanliness. Thank you again for your kind feedback.

After living at The Lilacs for several years, as her Alzheimer's progressed, my mother died there on 8th February 2024. We were surrounded by care and compassion both during and after her final days. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble, and it was as though they were saying goodbye to one of their
friends. I have nothing but praise for all the staff who looked after my mother during her years of residence. They knew her moods, likes and dislikes, and acted accordingly with kindness and understanding. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the way you looked after her. I couldn't have asked for better.

Twenty-one months ago, I had to make the hardest decision of my life. My mum had dementia and I had to put her in a care home. I chose The Lilacs Residential Home in Old Tiverton Road, Exeter. On Sunday, Mum became ill and they started palliative care. Over the last couple of days and nights, Mum and
I and other family members experienced such love and care from all the staff. From the manager to the cleaner, they showed such kindness and compassion. I heard stories from so many members of staff about Mum, that confirmed that I had done the right thing. They knew Mum, they had seen beyond the dementia and had seen her as she had been. They had treated her with respect and dignity right up to this morning when Mum passed peacefully. The kindness didn't stop though. Their concern then passed to me, making sure I was ok and guiding me through something I have never experienced before. I cannot thank Mum's Lilacs family enough. You have gone above and beyond. Thank you is just not enough.

Reply from Nathan Stone, Director. at The Lilacs Residential Home

Please allow me to begin by saying how sorry I am for your recent loss. From what you say, it is clear that your mum was a well-loved member of the family at The Lilacs and that she will be greatly missed by all. May I also thank you so much for sharing your experience - it's so important for our care team at The Lilacs to see how much their care means to our residents and their families and other loved ones. Your words and experience will also be a source of great reassurance for anybody else who finds themselves in the really difficult situation that you were facing twenty-one months ago. We wish you and your family all the very best at this difficult time. Kindest regards.

I am so pleased with the care my mum receives at The Lilacs. All the staff are friendly and so very kind, nothing is too much trouble for them. I had been so worried about my mum and she is now so much happier and I can relax knowing that she is receiving exceptional care. Her whole life has improved
and she feels safe and loves the company she now has. Thank you for making a difficult time bearable and even happy for us knowing my mum is so well cared for.

My mum's been in The Lilacs Residential Home for over a year now, if not longer. She loves it, friendly and polite staff, even I have a bit of fun with them. My mum's cheeky when she is happy (always cheeky). She is very well looked after and has a wonderful room. The staff are brilliant.

It's always great when we have cheeky residents who have a bit of banter and a laugh with the care team - it's great for them, it's great for the care team and it encourages other, possibly less confident residents, to also join in. Thank you for your kind words about the care team - I know they will really appreciate them. Kindest regards, Nathan.

Mum has been a resident at The Lilacs for over four (4) years now and we have been really pleased with the level of care and support provided. The staff are helpful and friendly towards both residents and visitors. Staff turnover seems very low - a positive reflection on the ethos of Stonehaven and
the professionalism of the Manager and her senior team. This continuity of care with familiar people has undoubtedly helped Mum. The Lilacs is comfortable and 'homely', displaying a positive and reassuring atmosphere.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave this really positive review of your experience with our care team and care home at The Lilacs in Exeter. We're all really pleased that you are happy with the care that your mum has received over her 4-years with us at The Lilacs. Thank you in particular for highlighting our fantastic care team and the importance of the work they do. Striking the balance between professional and homely is no easy task - yet the care team at The Lilacs achieve it well. Yes, we are indeed fortunate to have a great management team and the senior team at The Lilacs. And thank you also for recognising as a whole - there are a lot of people working really hard behind the scenes to provide the support and resources that our front line care teams need in order to be able to do their jobs to the very best level. It's not often that those people are recognised, yet feedback such as this is as important to them as to anybody else.

From the very first phone call, my family and I were impressed by the help, kindness and reassurance we were given at what is a decision that is so hard. It is exceptionally difficult, especially as we haven't been inside the home because of Covid and lockdown, but have felt very happy and well informed
since "Dad" entered the home in August 2020. I couldn't fault the care and attention given, especially as a couple of health issues have arisen along the way, which was attended to speedily. Very grateful to all for how my Dad has settled, is happy and well looked after.

Mum came to The Lilacs in quite poor health just over two years ago. She came after several weeks in the hospital where she was found to have numerous problems, and it was decided she needed around the clock care. In that time, her problems have either disappeared or are under control. Her wits are
sharper, she jokes again, her anxiety has completely gone, and she eats normally again. The environment in The Lilacs is very good, and I'm so pleased we got her in.

Hello Michael, thank you for taking the time to publish this lovely review of your experience with our care team and care home at The Lilacs on Old Tiverton Road in Exeter, and what a lovely story it is to read. It's so nice to learn how your mum's health has improved since moving to The Lilacs, and that she is both physically and psychologically healthier and happier. We do, in truth, see similar stories regularly - when people have a care home to take care of their basic needs; food, heat, companionship, laundry etc we regularly see people regaining their energy and strength, and once again, being able to enjoy life rather than finding it a daily struggle. Thank you again for sharing this story. Kindest regards.

Due to Coivd, I haven't been able to visit much, but when I have, I've been very impressed with the care and consideration given to my husband. His care always seemed to be their priority.

Good afternoon, thank you for taking the time to post this review of your experience with our care team and care home at The Lilacs in Exeter. We're all really pleased that you are happy with the care that your husband is receiving. We have a really good care team at The Lilacs, and you can indeed be assured that each of our residents is their number one priority. Yes, the restrictions on visiting are hard for everybody - but we're afraid essential given the current Covid 19 situation. We are doing all that we can to keep it out of the homes. That said, our visiting policy is under constant review, taking into consideration our own operational circumstances and risk assessments coupled with Government advice and guidance. We hope to very soon be able to start taking small steps towards outside visits and using the visitor suite that we have created at The Lilacs. Until such a time, we hope you keep safe and well. Kindest regards.

My friend moved into The Lilacs last autumn following several falls and numerous hospital visits. Since moving into care, she now feels safe, secure and her self confidence has returned. She has numerous medical conditions, all of which were accommodated. For her, it was a good move. She has her own
key to her room, so can still maintain her independence but with immediate assistance if necessary - either from staff nearby or via a call button in her room. She tells me her room is cleaned regularly and her laundry is dealt with. For a while, some items of clothing 'went missing'. Subsequently, I purchased a quantity of iron-on labels and labelled all clothing. The problem no longer occurs. She tells me she is happy with about 90% of the meals, I understand the cook is apt to put flavourings in some foods which my friend is not to keen on. But her weight is checked regularly and all seems in order. To sum up she is happy and certainly would not wish to move.

Good morning D A. Thank you for taking the time to write and publish this review of your own, and your friends, experience of our care team and care home at The Lilacs. It's great to hear that since moving in your friend has regained her self confidence and is happy. We note the feedback about items of clothing - these mistakes do happen from time to time in care homes where there is a large volume of laundry (that's not to say they should, of course). We do ask all residents/their representatives to label all items of clothing as this does help our laundry teams greatly to be able to ensure that all items make their way back to the right rooms. I know the care home manager will speak to the chef with regards to the comments about food. Thank you again for this valuable feedback. Kindest regards.

Due to Covid-19, I have not stepped foot inside The Lilacs yet, my contact with the staff via phone and email has always been met with an efficient and professional manner. Mum seems really settled and happy which is a good thing. Again the Covid-19 crisis has meant that The Lilacs has sent us regular
monthly newsletters which has been lovely to receive.

Good morning C W. Thank you for taking the time to write and publish this 5/5 review for our care team and care home at The Lilacs. It's a real shame that you have not been able to enter the building yourself (for the benefit of other readers - this is owing to restrictions imposed to protect our residents from COVID-19). It's great that the care team have been making full use of electronic communication to keep you updated, not just in terms of any questions you may have, but also by sending you news of events and the general goings-on in The Lilacs. It's great that your mum is really happy and settled. We are currently working with an architect to see how we can safely invite visitors back into The Lilacs to meet in a safe 'visiting room'. We hope to have this installed and in use by no later than the end of September 2020. Until such a time managed/restricted visits in the garden are possible - by prior arrangement with the care home manager. Kindest regards.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.447)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.447) out of 10 for The Lilacs Residential Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.747 for The Lilacs Residential Home is calculated as follows: ( (64 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 83 Ratings = 4.747

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Lilacs Residential Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 29 registered maximum number of service users is 5.8, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
