  • The Old Vicarage Care Home, Budleigh Salterton
The Old Vicarage Residential Home is a grade two listed Georgian country house, located in scenic village of Otterton, between Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth.

The home has been operating as a family-run care home for over 35 years, with an unrivalled reputation for providing high quality, compassionate care in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

The home offers both long-term residential care, short respite stays, holidays and post-operative care for older people. Residents are free to come and go as they please and for that reason, they are unable to provide the secure environment required for conditions such as dementia. All bedrooms have their own en-suite facilities and views over the gardens.

The home prides itself on delivering the highest standards of care to all residents in a relaxed and friendly way. The staff understand that it can be an unsettling decision to move into a new home, but they aim to support residents, family and friends throughout the transition and provide the highest possible quality of personalised care thereafter.

Retirement is a very individual situation and they build their approach to socialising and activities to suit the person, not the other way around. Some people chose to be active and join in all the excitement of activities programme and social events. Others request peace and quiet for rest and recuperation. There is an in-house enabling service provided, to help you continue to do the things you enjoy but may struggle with on your own, such as shopping or visiting friends.

Cannot fault the care given to my father during his 4-month stay. Excellent staff who always made sure my father's wishes were taken into account. His room was always clean and tidy. The food was always varied, good quality and beautifully presented. We were made to feel very welcome whenever we visited.
Would definitely recommend it to others.

My experience of one week's respite care was a pleasant experience in the circumstances of a post-operative knee operation.
The care home was efficiently run with a homely feeling permeating the whole building a staff where nothing was too much trouble.

Thank you so much for sparing the time to review our care service. We are delighted to hear your comments and hope you continue to make a good recovery after your knee operation. With best wishes from us all.

I stayed at the Old Vicarage for a short break in February 2024. This was the first time I had stayed in a care home. I was a little anxious before arriving, but I was made so welcome that I soon felt comfortable and quite 'at home'. I couldn't praise the staff more highly. As well as being very professional,
everyone was so caring, warm and friendly. The food was delicious and I very much enjoyed having my lunch in the dining room. I said to my son it's like being in a 5-star hotel! I had visits from friends and my son during the week and I appreciated how my visitors were made welcome with tea and cake. I was also happy when my son could join me for lunch. He agreed with my 5-star hotel comment. I was also pleased to be able to join the longer-term residents with organised activities. I hope to be able to return to The Old Vicarage for another short break in the summer. I'm looking forward to being able to enjoy the garden in the better weather.

My mum stayed for respite care. She enjoyed it so much, she asked to stay an extra week!
All the staff are lovely and very caring and residents are treated with respect and dignity. There’s also a good variety of activities.
The home-prepared food is really very nice. Special mention to one member
of staff in particular for his teatime cakes.

Huge thanks to everyone at The Old Vicarage who have ensured that this is a home from home for mum. She had always advised that she would never contemplate leaving her own home and going into a care home. Within 2 weeks of the necessity of the move, she has ceased to ask how long she is staying and
conceded that it is a joy to be in such a cosy, comfortable place. In her own words, the staff are kind, attentive and unobtrusive. Always available if needed, but not bothering her, nor bossing her around like she felt the carers did at home. It is so wonderful to see her rested and relaxed, enjoying the delicious food, and being cared for. This has been such a relief for me, and removed the guilt a relative naturally feels when the necessary transition has to be made. There is always a lovely welcome from the staff when I am visiting, and they are really going the extra mile to address mum's needs and ensure she is content. I cannot recommend the Old Vicarage highly enough.

Based on my recent respite stay, I have no hesitation in rating The Old Vicarage as outstanding. From the moment you enter the grade 2 listed Georgian building, the feel is of quality, tranquillity and care. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, the quality of the home-cooked food is exceptional
and every effort is made to offer residents mental stimulation. The overall management of the house is enlightened and augurs well for the future well-being of the residents.
The Old Vicarage is special!

The Old Vicarage is home from home - and more. The delightful environment is very comfortably furnished and in style with the beautiful nature of the house, unlike many residential homes which are more functional. The team are all very dedicated and nothing is too much trouble to ensure residents have
a fulfilling stay. Food is of the highest quality and there is so much variety on offer, with individual tastes being catered for. Celebrations and themed meals are frequent, which means some residents are enjoying their food more than they had been alone.
Personal care is of the highest standard and residents are taken to appointments when necessary. The person I visit looks better than she has for years now she has company, activities and a stimulating lifestyle.

On visiting our friend, the gardens and home always looks warm and welcoming. Always a friendly greeting from the staff. The special room built for visits during Covid, has been excellent. The menu and decorations for special occasions are always excellent. I'm sure the residents feel well looked after.

I have found the home excellent, it is the least like a care home I have seen, more like a hotel. The staff are helpful, kind and considerate. The food is of a high standard and for special occasions like Christmas, the staff make every effort to make it a family occasion. They have been extremely careful
during covid, to protect the residents.

I have been associated with the home for 5/6 years. I've been more than satisfied, she is extremely happy, very well cared for. The home came strongly recommended and was made to feel very welcome and settled very quickly. Nothing was too much trouble and all her needs were met - despite Covid being
very upsetting for them all. The food is excellent and varied with the themed meal and lots of entertainment. Everything has been done during covid to keep the residents safe and well. We've all been kept well informed of all procedures that are in place. I couldn't be happier. She feels she is part of a big family.

My mother arrived at The Old Vicarage at short notice initially for a short term stay under the special summer offer, which was of excellent value. All the staff have been friendly and helpful in the settling in process, encouraging Mum in her new life, and their continued attention and care are second
to none. Mum is enjoying having a choice of activities to join in with, as well as a beautifully kept garden to walk or sit in.

The Old Vicarage is a caring family run home, which has the residents needs at the forefront. The staff are kind and friendly and always willing to help. They provide activities for the resident's enjoyment and to challenge them. My mum has been settled and happy and as a family, we are so relieved

On entering the Old Vicarage, one becomes aware of a pleasant, welcoming atmosphere, created by the staff working in the home. After two visits to the Old Vicarage, I knew it would be the place I could call home. Since moving here in March 2020, I have been comfortable and settled in one of the many
attractive rooms, with the staff doing everything possible to assist me. Visits from family and friends are encouraged and well organised. It is comforting to know that a resident may talk to a senior member of staff about any situation that is causing concern, or for some reassurance over an everyday matter.

I have lived in this care home for several years now and am very happy to be here. It is a cosy home where you feel comfortable and well looked after with kindness and understanding. The staff are well trained in the care of the residents and look after all individual needs. The food is varied and good
and individual preferences are catered for. There are many different activities arranged for the residents to enjoy. If you need to be in a care home this one is a very good one to live in. I have no regrets at all about moving here.

The staff at the Old Vicarage were superb. From the moment they met Mum, they treated her with kindness and respect and this is how they looked after her on a daily basis. They worked very hard at meeting her needs and treating her as an intelligent adult, with a past, present and future. I can't thank
them enough. I always felt she was in very safe and kind hands.

Mum has been a resident here for over 4 years. She was struggling at home and lonely. We decided on The Old Vicarage because of its reputation and mum had visited before and it was lovely. Mum is the happiest she has been in years. She has made good friends with other residents and she says all the
staff are her friends too. As family, I find the manager kind, caring, patient and all her team. During Covid they have kept us informed, kept everyone safe and also made special arrangements so we could visit.

I rang The Old Vicarage when my mum fell and injured herself at home. Right from the off, they were helpful, organised and efficient at getting back to me, unlike other places that didn't answer the phone or call me back. The Manager came to see mum at home and she was very kind and patient, she explained
everything and reassured mum who was quite anxious about going. Once she was in, my sister, my wife and I were all permitted to visit, despite the Covid-19 restrictions and we always found the staff to be helpful, friendly and organised. We were made very welcome and we had afternoon teas in the lovely garden together, lovely peaceful surroundings, no traffic and just birdsong. I could not fault the staff that I met, they were cheerful and very kind to mum and welcoming to us. My mum also said that she found the food to be fantastic and she is a fussy eater! I would book again and heartily recommend to others.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.663)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.663) out of 10 for The Old Vicarage Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.863 for The Old Vicarage Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (82 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 95 Ratings = 4.863

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Old Vicarage Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 26 registered maximum number of service users is 5.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
