  • The Old Vicarage Care Home, Budleigh Salterton
The Old Vicarage Residential Home is a grade two listed Georgian country house, located in scenic village of Otterton, between Budleigh Salterton and Sidmouth.

The home has been operating as a family-run care home for over 35 years, with an unrivalled reputation for providing high quality, compassionate care in a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

The home offers both long-term residential care, short respite stays, holidays and post-operative care for older people. Residents are free to come and go as they please and for that reason, they are unable to provide the secure environment required for conditions such as dementia. All bedrooms have their own en-suite facilities and views over the gardens.

The home prides itself on delivering the highest standards of care to all residents in a relaxed and friendly way. The staff understand that it can be an unsettling decision to move into a new home, but they aim to support residents, family and friends throughout the transition and provide the highest possible quality of personalised care thereafter.

Retirement is a very individual situation and they build their approach to socialising and activities to suit the person, not the other way around. Some people chose to be active and join in all the excitement of activities programme and social events. Others request peace and quiet for rest and recuperation. There is an in-house enabling service provided, to help you continue to do the things you enjoy but may struggle with on your own, such as shopping or visiting friends.

I came here in April 2017 because of many falls, followed by broken bones made it impossible to live on my own. I have been very comfortable and received good unobtrusive care. Cheerful staff and good food. Lovely garden and vegetable garden provides most of our vegetables. In the summer we are encouraged
to be outside by having chairs and tables ready outside and willing staff to bring out tea and coffee when asked. Visitors always welcome and we can come and go as we please.

My mother went to The Old Vicarage in December 2013 and I have nothing but praise for the way she has been cared for since. The staff all of them past and present have been caring, professional, attentive, friendly and supportive to my mother. I would highly recommend The Old Vicarage. It is so comfortable
for the residents and the small number of residents creates a very reassuring and relaxed atmosphere.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.663)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.663) out of 10 for The Old Vicarage Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.863 for The Old Vicarage Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (82 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 95 Ratings = 4.863

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Old Vicarage Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 26 registered maximum number of service users is 5.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
