From day one of my sister moving to Puddavine Totnes she was made to feel welcome and at home.
The staff are all excellent, nothing was too much trouble for them, always polite and very helpful.
The home was always very clean with no horrible smells, a pleasant place to walk in to.
Unfortunately,
my sister has since passed away, but I know had she lived longer she would still have been happy there.

Puddavine Court provided short stay care for my parents to enable them to attend their granddaughter's wedding. The care was excellent, staff extremely supportive and understanding. I would definitely recommend this care home. Thank you.

My mother and father have been residents for 3 and 2 years respectively. I am very pleased with how they are being looked after, particularly as they both are immobile and need help constantly. It is a pity that there have been some staff changes which I realise is inevitable as my father particularly
gets used to being helped by the same carers. Nevertheless, I feel that their needs are constantly monitored and I am usually informed of any changes necessary for their care.

Puddavine has taken very good care of my grandmother and the staff are very caring and courteous. The spaces for residents are bright and cheerful too. I recommend it highly.

Reply from Nikki Rogers, Director at Puddavine Court

We are delighted to know that you are very happy with the care that your grandmother receives and that you feel our staff are caring and courteous. We always strive to provide good care in a safe and welcoming environment for all of our residents and therefore it is lovely for our staff to know that people do consider them to be a big part of their lives and trust them to look after them.

Friendly, efficient, personal caring service. Helpful, informative dialogue on the phone. Good choice of food, well presented.
Mum would like to sit in the courtyard in appropriate weather but thinks this is only possible if a member of staff is present. The use of the large room opposite Mum's room
is light and would increase the number of sitting areas used.

Dear Tim
Thank you very much for taking the time to fill in and return the recommendation form. It is lovely for us to know that you are happy with the care that your mum is receiving whilst living at Puddavine Court. Please have a chat with the home's manager regarding mum being able to sit outside alone in the court yard but as far as I know residents are able to do this. The memory room is for everyone to enjoy sitting in and I love seeing it used. Thank you - Nikki Rogers, Director.

I found the staff to all be very friendly and eager to help.
Residents very happy.
The home is clean and tidy.
The weekly entertainer involves everyone with catchy music and song - all have a good time!
Probably the best care home I have visited.

We would like to say how happy we were with the manager and staff at the care home. From day one, they could not do enough to help my mother settle in after having a stroke. The room was spacious and light which made better for my mother to re-adjust. Fortunately, my mother was able to return home after
only 3 and a half weeks but even after she had left, we had a member of staff deliver some items which had been left behind to our home address some miles away from Totnes in her own time - PRICELESS.

I visit my aunt twice a week. I pop in at any time. Staff are unfailingly kind, gentle, loving and supportive to my aunt and to others. Staff and residents have all obvious good relationship, shown in how residents and staff respond to each other. Staff support residents to be capable, mobile and independent
as is possible and treat them with dignity and respect.
My aunt's dementia means she says unkind and often cruel things in a loud voice and staff are so sweet. Management are also very kind, understand what's happening for my aunt and will give me support and listen f I need it. They all keep me informed. I'm glad my aunt is looked after by such lovely people.

My mother lived at Puddavine Court for 18 months.
She moved there when unable to manage at home.
Despite several disabilities, the care home looked after her well and all family members were happy with her care. She died in the care home and the end of life care was exemplary, compassionate and keeping
us informed at all times.

My Mother had terminal cancer which came on quickly and we could not cope with mum on steroids at home. We chose Puddavine as a stop gap before going into a nursing home to give us some time. However, my mum loved Puddavine so we kept her there. The staff could not have been better and more loving to
my mother and it helped us greatly at the end of her life. There was nothing they could not do for us and I could not recommend them highly enough. In particularly the manager and one of the senior nurses were amazing but quite frankly all the staff were great from the cleaners to senior staff.

I can't say any home would be good enough for where you want your mum but Puddavine was spotless, the food good and the care fantastic and they made a horrible time of our lives much easier for us.

My aunt was a resident for 4 months this year. In general, her care was good and the staff were very caring. There are visiting entertainers but no activities coordinator so there were long periods when my aunt was left alone just watching things. Her dementia meant she was unlikely to initiate activities
or conversations. This was also not helped by the fact her hearing aids were lost within a few days after her admission, for which the home accepted no liability. I feel this is a good home for people with no or very early dementia, but was probably not suited to my aunts level of dementia.

Mum came in for respite care when I suddenly fell ill. Mum was always worried about leaving home and having residential care but has gradually come to feel comfortable here. The staff are friendly and willing to listen when she has difficulty expressing herself,or confused. There is a feeling of space
and freedom
Which I feel she very much appreciates.
Visitors are greeted in a friendly way too and feel at home. The residents seem comfortable and happy. The environment is clean, comfortable and well organised and has no feeling of being institutional.
Mums room is light and pleasant and nice to retreat to when she fancies time on her own.
The staff have been very good about helping her to attend her religious meeting on Sundays.
Her stay is coming to a close as she will be returning home soon. I asked her if she would like to stay. Naturally home beckons, but she did say that if she ever needed residential care, she wouldn't look anywhere else.

Disappointing.

A poor start to contract - no clear 'new resident' process or sense-check reference a new residents dentistry needs/or mental health assessment discussion.

No use of gardens or outside space with most residents. Car park overlaps garden and not enough staff to accompany residents

- so no-one allowed out or given a key code to go out to the garden.
Use Cheshire ruling to overcome the issue - citing residents lack of mental capacity to not be given key code - and don't need next of kin's permission to do this.

No organised trips for residents in two years my father was there.

No evidence of intelligent solutions/strategies to combat dementia residents confusion or habits.

Found it difficult to help my father keep on top of personal grooming.
Didn't think to contact me even when weeks had gone by after the last shower given to my father.

A care home that provides very much the basics - but that is it.

Reply from Nikki Rogers, Director at Puddavine Court

We take seriously any concerns raised about any care needs that a person has that others feel could be met better at this service.
We have worked on the issues raised in this review with the author before her father left the home.
In our defence, the author was very keen for her father to remain at the home and some of the additional concerns (such as the grounds, access in and out of the home, car parking) have only been raised after her father left following the termination of his contract.
The grounds of the home are used by many residents and those with limited mental capacity do enjoy them because they are safe and enclosed.
Many residents enjoy sitting in them as do their families and friends.
The car park does border the extensive flat grounds but no-one visiting arrives at any speed that would be of any concern to any resident utilising the grounds.
The mini bus trips were stopped because of the Equality Act 2010 as we recognised that all residents’ needed to be offered the availability of using the bus and this was not possible because the minibus did not accommodate wheelchairs.
Individual families are aware of this and arrange for their relatives to have trips out as did the author of the review.
We recognise our limits on the care we provide and state in our literature that we are not a specialist dementia home.
This can necessitate us having to address sensitive issues as dementia increasing to the point we feel that other specialist professionals such as the local mental health team should be involved so that the correct care can be provided.
We recognise that this can be a painful realisation for any relative who finds the ongoing progress of dementia distressing.
We do look to resolve issues in a timely and professional manner.
On occasions, for whatever reason, relationships with residents’ carers can sadly break down. We recognise that this is the very last thing we would want but when it occurs we need to be professional and honest about that and we feel in this case we were.
We are saddened that the author cannot recall the better times her father enjoyed whilst at the service but wish him well in his new placement.

Current Review Score: 8.1 (8.124)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.1 (8.124) out of 10 for Puddavine Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.305 for Puddavine Court is calculated as follows: ( (38 Excellents x 5) + (12 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.305

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.819 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Puddavine Court is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 45 registered maximum number of service users is 9. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 9 = 0.444

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

For the last 25 years I've been a Registered Care Manager, 14 of which, with the Devon Care Group. I have worked at 4 DCG homes, ranging from a small 24 bedded home a nursing home and now to one of the bigger homes with 45 beds. I have gained a lot of experience over this time and understand the importance of having a caring and strong team. I like to work with young carers to bring the future managers through so good care continues and to show how rewarding the job is. I've always been passionate about people being cared for in a way that brings out the best in them.

I have been a Senior carer for a few years now. I love running my shift to the best of my capabilities, but it is made all that much easier with the good team of carers we have. There are many aspects to our roles, but Palliative Care is something that I am passionate about and feel that it is a real privilege to care for someone at this time of their lives. It is lovely to be able to pass down knowledge gained along my way to the team that share this interest also. Away from work I am kept busy with my pets and family members, I like to relax with a good book or gardening weather permitting!
