Mum was a resident at Southlands for over 4 years. Sadly mum passed away on the home at the age of 97. She could be a bit of a challenge at times but was very well cared for. The staff was very considerate and caring, nothing but praise for all at Southlands.

Southlands cared for my very elderly uncle for over three years until his recent death. He was very well cared for throughout his stay and his extensive needs were extremely well met, staff responding quickly to any change in his needs. The staff were also very helpful in helping us deal with the various
social services assessments that were needed in his care. The home was extremely well managed with all staff working very efficiently as a team and with great care and consideration for him, his wife and us. Early in his stay the home was extensively refurbished addressing the specific needs their elderly residents and is now a lovely place in which to be cared for and a delight to visit. We highly recommend this excellent home.

I can't speak highly enough of the staff and all concerned at Southlands, who tended so well to my aunt's needs in her final time of life.
My aunt quickly realised what a lovely home she had arrived in, when, after only a day she demanded to be allowed to stay despite her initial reluctance.
On arrival,
my aunt was really very unwell after a lengthy spell in hospital, but thanks to Southlands, my sister and I are convinced that she enjoyed the best possible final year of her life, considering the many ill health conditions she endured.
The rooms are bright and clean (newly refurbished during my aunt's stay) and the lounge and dining areas are cheerful places where many activities go on and we as relatives were always made to feel welcome as family members to join in and take part and enjoy everybody's company. We were, of course, always encouraged to visit as often as we liked.
Overall, the sense of family atmosphere and excellent care helped prolong the time we had with our dear aunt.

Mum was a resident in Southlands RCH for 12 years. She was always very happy there. The staff are very considerate and caring. Nothing was ever too much trouble for the girls. Families are always welcome, no matter what time of day.

My mum (95) and dad (96) moved from their bungalow into Southlands in February 2018. Mum has been diagnosed with early stages of dementia and dad was finding it difficult to cope despite a daily home care package.
The management, staff and residents were most welcoming and could not have done any more
to make their life comfortable. They were offered a newly refurbished twin room with an en-suite wet room which suited them perfectly.
In the short time while they were there they were both encouraged to join in the various activities and entertainments available.
Sadly, mum passed away in the home and the way in which the staff handled the subsequent formalities was exemplary; a relief to the family at a difficult sensitive time. Dad subsequently passed away in hospital.

The home is very clean, nice views and surroundings. The carers are doing a wonderful job with a smile. Always found time to talk to you and the resident informing you of updates of the resident's health and well being.

Our mother went to Southlands aged 99 when she was no longer able to care for herself.
She was treated as an individual and encouraged to be herself.
She was allowed to have her own furniture, pot plants on a patio accessible from the room and a bird feeder outside the window.
She was there for 6
months and the unwilling loss of her independence led her to be, at times, uncooperative with the staff.
Despite this, the care and attention she received throughout the 6 months until she died was exemplary.
She was treated with respect and dignity.
Staff continued to offer her food and drink even when she resisted the offers and to respect her dignity.
When she weakened and was close to death, family members were accommodated and looked after with considerable sympathy.
The owner and manager set a standard of care and humanity which permeates the home.
All staff, whatever their role, see themselves as part of a team helping and supporting residents.
It is difficult to see how the service our mother received could have been improved.
We have nothing but praise for Southlands and all the staff.

The gentleman for whom I was an attorney was a resident from May 2016 until he passed away in January. The care that he received was exemplary at every stage.


He was treated with respect, dignity, thoughtfulness and as an individual at all times, even when his condition made this sometimes testing

for his carers.


His accommodation was very comfortable, of a high standard and well maintained - he had lovely views of the gardens and it had a homely and personal feel to it. All members of our family were always made most welcome by the staff.


I wouldn’t hesitate in giving Southlands the highest possible recommendation.

From the first moment we walked in the door, we knew we had found the place for our dear friend. All the staff were friendly and welcoming.
The owner has a hands-on approach and appears to know all the residents well.
He is popular with staff and residents which makes for a warm, friendly and very
supportive atmosphere throughout.
Many fun activities are organised and enjoyed by residents and relatives.

Carol

Carol Dyke

Job Title: Manager

Joined: 2000

At the helm is State Registered Nurse, Carol Dyke, who has been a nurse for more than three decades. She’s been at Southlands for 21 years and is well-beloved by her team, our residents, and Carol oversees five senior carers, our team of carers, cooks, housekeepers and an activities coordinator. Many hold NVQ Level 2 and 3 qualifications, and all have undertaken the specialist Care Certificate.


We know how valuable good staff are so we work hard to retain our best and most dedicated people by treating them fairly, recognising and rewarding great work, helping them continue their professional education and providing them with a career path they can be proud of and stimulated by.


In addition, we employ handymen and gardeners as well as other professionals to keep the home safe and running smoothly for you.

Andrew Bone

Job Title: Owner

My wife Chris and I have extensive experience in social care provision. I qualified as a social worker in 1991 and over the course of thirty years, I have variously managed a London Borough’s homes for the elderly, been an inspector of care homes, operated homes for people with learning difficulties and provided houses and support for people in crisis or with complex needs.


In 2002 I helped establish a cancer support centre which I still oversee as a trustee.


My wife Chris is a qualified Human Resources Manager and supports me and our children whilst also volunteering for a specialist charity.


I am actively involved in the management of Southlands, and know all of our residents and their families personally.


Amber

Amber Weston

Job Title: Administrator and Resident Liaison Officer

Joined: 2020

Following a family move and career change, Amber began working as a Care Assistant. Her breadth of experience in the care sector and administrative background means Amber has quickly become a valued member of the Southlands team.


As Administrator and Liaison Officer, Amber is responsible for the day-to-day administrative functioning of the home, supporting Andrew (Proprietor) and Carol (Home Manager) in their roles. This involves a variety of tasks such as employment checks, inquiry handling, show rounds and admissions, to reassuring residents and relatives and dealing with their day-to-day requests.


Amber has a keen interest in outdoor sports such as kayaking and cycling and loves nothing more than a swim in the sea after a long days work.

Jessica Johns

Job Title: Activities Coordinator

Joined: 2021

Jessica joined the team in march 2021, he infectious laugh and outbound personality make her a pleasure to be around.Jessica uses care plans and consider residents’ histories and hobbies to plan respectful activities that enhance lives, encourage socialisation and stimulate memories. This is an important part of our person-centered care.


Activities that are multi-sensory are proven to help by increasing concentration and communication, helping cognitive symptoms and social interactions while stimulating reminiscent therapy. Southlands achieves this in a number of ways, some of which are cooking workshops, ‘Guess the scent’ games, culture days, along with arts and crafts.

Margaret, Chrissy and Helen

Job Title: Seniour Care Team

Our dedicated and experienced senior team is responsible for managing the clinical care of our residents at Southlands focusing on their holistic care, which includes their mental, physical and emotional wellbeing.


This involves administering medication, working with our home GP and supporting carers to ensure residents receive person-centered care in accordance with their needs, wishes and asperations.


As with all our staff Margaret cares deeply about each and every resident and enjoy sharing the ups and downs of life sharing compassion, laughter and is a keen listerner.


James

James White

Job Title: Maintenance

James is our Handyman who works very hard fixing things and making sure our home runs smoothly. This involves ensuring that any maintenance/repair works are carried out promptly and efficiently with minimum disturbance. Having started at Southlands over 10 years ago, James is always willing to turn his hand to anything, even volunteered to be our barman at a Christmas party, making cocktails for the residents, all in all, a hard working and valuable team player.

Job Title: All About Care

To provide the exemplary care our residents deserve, we intentionally hire more staff than the industry average. Having more staff means we can offer a more relaxed, stress-free environment for our residents, where the staff have time to deliver person-centred care. Our care team are passionate about their jobs and the care team have completed additional specialised training in supporting those living here at Southlands.


We generally work on ratios of around 1:4 care staff per resident by day and 1:8 by night. However, these ratios do not include the home’s domestic, catering, laundry, activities and management staff.

Paul is one of our talented Cooks at Southlands who ensures residents enjoy a varied menu focusing on the nutritional needs of our residents. Paul has over 10 years of experience working as Cook in the care sector.


Having joined the Southlands team in 2016, Paul quickly made an impression on residents, relatives and staff. The food he cooks is appetizing, nutritional and commended by all. He also regularly goes above and beyond for resident’s special occasions, baking beautiful Birthday cakes and providing the little extras that he was well known for when working in well-known Devon eating establishments.
