My dad has had two recent spells at Thornfield following hospital stays. The staff and management are excellent and we were very pleased with Dad's care. They make great effort with activities for residents and have regular entertainment too. The food seemed very good. Also, they are keen to help with
future care advice when dad gets home which is most appreciated. Many thanks to all.

The staff are caring, thoughtful and kind, not only for the resident but for their family too. My father loved staying here and in his words - the best hotel I've ever stayed in. Amazing food, catering for every taste.

My husband has dementia and he was going to stay for 2 weeks respite. The first day he got out by walking out the front door, but they got him back, the third day eventually phone answered 8pm, asked to talk with him and was told call back they were out looking for him, luckily GPS on his phone so I
could give directions. I informed direction he was going, to pack his stuff I was on my way to collect him.
I arrived and they had him back, he had been gone, lost and scared for approximately an hour, dressed in the day before clothing and pyjamas on top. The first words he said to me were “am I in trouble”. I was so distraught at the condition of him and how ill he looked, he was meant to be on 10-minute observation but they did not miss him. He walked through the front door which was faulty, saw the gates were locked went back to reception got a chair and climbed over promptly falling and damaging his ribs. The CQC report is garbage. Staff changed again. Do not use this home if you love the person.

Reply from Amy Bennett, Compliance Officer at Thornfield Care Home

The company takes all legitimate feedback and any justified concerns raised seriously. At the time of the event, a thorough investigation was carried out, working closely with our regulatory bodies as part of our registration requirements. During this process, all information was provided to CQC, Safeguarding and the Local Authority and all were satisfied with the evidence provided. We acknowledge that the gentleman in question left our premises in October 2023, but the circumstances surrounding this were far more complex and detailed. We have no knowledge that there was a fall, or any injury sustained during this short period of absence from the Home. Your husband was promptly collected by a senior member of the Company and was reported to be in good spirits and of physical wellbeing.

Mum entered Thornfield following an extended hospital stay. Her health quickly deteriorated from pre-existing complex health issues making her bedridden and leading to the necessity of end-of-life care. Her room was quickly adapted to suit her personal needs and enable her to look out the window and
the staff spent as much time as possible with her. She ended her life there with outstanding care, comfort and dignity. Every caller and visitor was treated with the greatest courtesy and kindness making this difficult time as easy as possible. We cannot compliment all of the staff enough, from support, through care to senior management. Mum left Thornfield with the individual goodbye of all staff there and her family will always remember the warmth she and they experienced.

My husband and I visited his brother for his birthday in January 2024. The staff had made a special effort to celebrate his birthday and despite his advancing dementia and inability to communicate verbally, his response to the humour shared with him was immediate and delightful.
His carer had bought
a gift that was perfectly in tune with his particular interest. Cannot thank two members of staff, in particular, enough for their care and concern for his quality of life. An amazing home. We are so grateful to all the staff who all demonstrate gentle care for everyone they look after.

It is such a relief for me to have found a warm, friendly, safe and very caring environment for Mum where staff are able to address Mum's challenges with kindness and compassion and for me to know that Mum will not be asked to move again.
Mum arrived a year ago in a pretty distressed state having been
resident in a place with poor medication management and where Mum felt scared and unwelcome and unable to sleep. Staff there were cold and communication was poor.
Thornfield Care Home is such a welcoming environment for residents and family members, and communication is excellent and timely. With the support of the local GP who really assessed Mum's needs in detail, she had a complete review of all her medication and is well managed.
The activities programme is very full and there is a lot of musical entertainment as well as trips out in the minibuses. I wish we had found Thornfield earlier in Mum's dementia journey.
A very well managed care home.

As soon as I walked into the reception on my first visit I received a warm friendly welcome from the Receptionist and Manager then upon entering into the main lounge I was so impressed by the decor and layout I was absolutely gobsmacked. The more areas I was shown the more I had a smile on my face -
every staff member I passed greeted me with such friendliness. I felt so at ease and was really looking forward to my mother becoming a member of what I perceived as a lovely family.
The activities and all round care is so well geared for our loved ones that unfortunately have dementia. I have been kept well informed with Mum's progress and even had a call from the doctor that will be taking over her care - Also must mention the food is wonderful and such a choice.
I took my nine year old granddaughter on a visit last week and when we got home she asked - 'When I get old can I live in a place like Thornfield' - What a recommendation!

Dad was discharged from hospital to Thornfield Care Home eleven months ago. He is well cared for by an amazing group of staff who go over and above what's expected. Thornfield Care Home makes a huge effort with activities for residents as well as regular entertainment which is greatly enjoyed. The food
is excellent and care is taken to ensure residents are provided with food they enjoy and dislikes are noted. I've never had any concerns about Thornfield and whenever I've raised any housekeeping issues, they are dealt with straight away. Dad is very happy in his new home.

Overall, the care is reassuringly good and the staff are very kind. My concern is that for two years we have been asking for someone to find our relative's glasses and hearing aids. We keep asking and never really get a definitive answer. She went in with them and can hardly have lost them outside the
home as it's been in lockdown. Feedback has been poor.

I do understand that not getting the answers you need can be very frustrating. Alternatively, you are welcome to come to the office and speak with the management team. Thornfield Care Home is an absolutely fantastic home for people living with dementia.
I struggled for two years to find somewhere that could meet my mum’s needs. She has complex dementia and anxiety and very much needed one to one attention. We tried two care homes as well as care at home but my mum
could not settle anywhere. We were just told that we had to accept that’s how my mum would always be.
We also visited numerous homes before having Thornfield recommended to us.
The warmth and compassion from all the carers and the ratio of staff to residents really sets Thornfield apart from any other care home I have seen. They have got everything right and it shows in the contentment of the residents and happiness of the staff.
The home is also incredibly well run. I could not recommend Thornfield highly enough!

My father has now been a resident at Thornfield for seven months. We are very pleased with the care he is receiving. All the staff are very welcoming and friendly whilst remaining professional. They are happy to answer any questions that we have and always phone to let us know any updates on Dad's care
and wellbeing. Thornfield is always kept clean and tidy despite the best efforts of some of the residents! There are lots of activities for residents to take part in. The staff always go the extra mile for special occasions. We are looking forward to seeing the jubilee celebrations.

Overall quite positive, but find there is sometimes a miscommunication between staff members, with some knowing things that have happened/are happening and others not knowing anything and having to ask around. The home seems to be clean and tidy, and staff are happy to help and sort out any issues that
arise.

My mother has Altzheimers and has begun to "wander" as well as forget where she is and has forgotten most of her relatives. I find her a challenge! But the staff are amazingly patient, give her hugs and affection, tease and cajole her into doing what needs to be done. Some things are difficult - things
go missing from time to time, as other residents may forget what is "theirs", that kind of thing, - but this is part and parcel of a Care Home specialising in dementia. A phone call with staff, or a chat about a worry, always results in resolving matters, nothing is too much or too little trouble for the staff. Activities are creative, outings are frequent, for those who can manage the minibus, staff are kind and gentle with all residents. As always in these situations - by definition, emotionally stressful for relatives - good communication with staff is essential (and a two-way process) and I have found this to be excellent.

There are some really caring staff members here but they are let down by poor management and an overly zealous accounts team. My father was placed there by the hospital. The personal carers were considerate but I often had to ask for drinks to be provided in the room and push to get a GP in to see him.
I felt I had to take the initiative in getting the additional pain relief and suitable food for him rather than there being any proactive plan. On one occasion he was found naked by a scheduled visitor and in a state of distress - we are still not sure how this could have been allowed to happen.
When he passed away the accounts team insisted on invoking a clause to claim an extra week's cost which seems callous and penny-pinching at a very sensitive time.

My husband stayed for 10 days for respite. He has dementia and I worried he might not be happy out of his routine, but he thoroughly enjoyed his stay and wants to go back again. The staff were excellent and entertained him, he enjoyed his food and his trips out in the minibus. I would definitely recommend

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.312)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.312) out of 10 for Thornfield Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.547 for Thornfield Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (100 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) + (12 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 117 Ratings = 4.547

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.765 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Thornfield Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.865

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
