Wisteria House is truly exceptional. A small home, it has a lovely family feel and the staff have a good understanding of dementia and provide a gold standard of care. They are very skilled whilst showing warmth, affection, and humour. My mum's face always lights up when her carers approach her and
that tells me everything. It gives us such confidence and peace of mind. Highly recommended!

Fantastic Care Home so caring to both residents and their families. My family member has thrived since being here. Previously he was A02 and is now able with a stick - this is due to the amazing staff who show such care, compassion and support to their residents within their care. It is such a warm
environment and feels like one big family. Thank you for everything you do.

Wisteria House has been a godsend. They are great with him, he is well-fed, always clean and is loved there. When I take him back after a day out I don't cry when I leave him as I know he is looked after. He has made great steps there. How anyone who can leave people in another particular care setting
should be ashamed of themselves. Thank god he is now in Wisteria House, we are so lucky and thankful. I see him and take him out every other day, he's more than a friend more like a father to me.

Following my mum's hospital stay last summer, her dementia had reached the point where she could no longer look after herself and would be extremely vulnerable outside of a 'dementia friendly' care home environment. After much research and visits to potential care homes, I felt my mum would be most
at home at Wisteria House, Stoke, Plymouth. I have been very pleased with the care and attention mum has received since becoming a resident at Wisteria House. All of the staff made her welcome and have been very attentive and caring. It did take some time for mum to settle following her stay in hospital and her change of circumstances in terms of needing full-time care. The team at Wisteria House have provided excellent care for my mum, personal and professional, plenty of kindness and consideration and always with good humour and patience. I am confident and satisfied that my mum is well looked after and cared for.

I cannot fault this home at all. Whenever I visit my mum she is safe, happy and content. My mum has not been this happy for years. The staff are all very caring, understanding and trustworthy. When I first met the managers I knew straight away Wisteria House would be perfect for mum. The interaction
between the residents and staff are amazing. I have experience in residential/nursing homes and find this home perfect.

All the staff are very helpful and from the time I am at Wisteria House (every week x2) I have never seen anyone treated at any time without care and compassion. Peoples well being and safety must obviously come first but like many other homes, the laundry is a problem. Things missing and not mums
own clothes. Help has been given to try and sort this. Hospital visits for mum have been dealt with very caringly. Everyone is very approachable.

My mother has been receiving daycare for the last 6 months at Wisteria House in Stoke, Plymouth. I cannot speak highly enough of the owner or her manager. Their staff are always cheerful, friendly and helpful and mother has always enjoyed going there. Having recently had an extended stay of two weeks,
she has become a long-term resident.

My mother with dementia and also an amputee, stayed for 1 month while we had a holiday. She went in the week before we went away so we were sure she settled in well.
We also had friends and neighbours calling in during our absence. It was a very comfortable, homely environment, the food was good and
plentiful and above all the care was excellent. The staff were all so kind, patient and respectful, we were very impressed. In fact, when mother came home her general health and mobility were much improved. Thank you Wisteria.

My mum and I were so worried about putting granddad/dad into a home.

Now I can say Wisteria House has changed our minds. We are so happy he is in their care. We visit twice a week and just love spending time with granddad/dad and the other residents. They are a joy to be around. So much so, we stay

for two hours!

The staff are so friendly, approachable, supportive, helpful and they are always happy!

We cannot fault Wisteria House in any way, shape or form.

A+ for these guys!

My uncle was a client at the above mentioned residential home and during his time there he was treated excellently. The staff were amazing and were professional and full of compassion and you could see the other clients melt to their helpfulness. It was/is a wonderful home with plenty of happiness,
food was excellent and teas and coffees whenever the clients wanted them as well as the visitors, a 100% residential home for hospitality, friendliness, atmosphere and surroundings.

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.263)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.263) out of 10 for Wisteria House (Stoke) is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.979 for Wisteria House (Stoke) is calculated as follows: ( (47 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 4.979

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.284 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Wisteria House (Stoke) is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 22 registered maximum number of service users is 4.4. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 4.4 = 0.909

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Carole Ham

Job Title: Manager

Carole has been involved with Wisteria House, Stoke for over 25 years and been joined by her daughter Lacey on the management team.

Carole and her team achieved the highest CQC of 'outstanding' in all areas.

Carole said ' I love the community spirit that revolves around the home, the way that each and every person who lives here is able and encouraged to treat Wisteria House as their own home. I strive to give a sense of belonging and well being with the freedom to live their life as they choose without having to feel restricted in anyway. If I personally chose to do my own thing in my own home then why shouldn't a person living with dementia?
Those who live at Wisteria House have the right to be respected and treated as individuals, with each one bringing a different quality and experience for others to share and enjoy, each one with their own story to tell.
Cheerful banter and a sense of humour help to encourage the people who live in the home form friendships and bonds with each other'

Job Title: Owner

I have been in the care sector just about all my working life, initially in children's care before buying my first care home here at Stoke, Plymouth specialising in dementia care over 20 years ago.
The quality and number of the staff team makes the difference between a good care home and a bad one. Quality carpets and fine furniture will not reduce anxiety and stress and help a person live positively with dementia. The staff team and the welcoming atmosphere they create, the supportive and positive feelings each individual living in the home receives is crucial.
The staff interview process is taken very seriously, the management team look for naturals, people who take pleasure from creating a situation which enables a person to live positively with dementia, they have a big hart and show it in abundance!
Our staff team are mostly long standing, some have worked with me for over 20 years. We feel this a valuable asset to the home, living with dementia where staff teams change constantly must be terribly difficult when life is confusing enough.
