When my wife was discharged from the hospital after the discovery of widespread cancer in her bones and a terminal prognosis, I faced one of the hardest decisions of my life when I realised that I knew I would not be able to care for her properly in our own home. She realised and accepted this graciously.
We were so fortunate that we discovered the Retreat, which was able to provide a place and welcome her to the home. We loved the informal, relaxed, and homely atmosphere of the place and its people. Every single member of staff treated my wife with warmth, friendship, respect, professionalism, and loving care. Even though she remained bedbound and completely dependent on the staff for her personal care, she was able to maintain her dignity, humour, and naturally positive outlook to the end because of their exceptional quality of care and support. During her final hours and after she died, we were greatly comforted by the kindness and support for myself and my children. Outstanding.

It didn't help the fact that my mother did not want to come here. From the outside, it is a lovely building a bit difficult for a wheelchair user though. They did eventually put something down on the outside path area to make it a bit easier to manoeuvre. My mum had had strokes and could weight bear
but was unstable on her feet.
Near the end, my mum was getting UTIs often. On visiting her small room each time it did smell of urine, my sister did complain about this. I also cleaned her commode myself once as this was part of the problem and did help. My mother was not happy here. She felt trapped and alone and although the loneliness was due to the fact she could not leave her room herself, as she had to be pushed there she just didn't want to join in with the others. I pushed her there once myself and the few people there were asleep. The carers seemed nice but when my mum became ill I felt that their understanding, care, and knowledge of septicemia were not enough and unfortunately she died.

Mum has been in the Retreat Care Home since the start of the COVID-19 lock-down, being a very difficult time. We have had limited opportunity to speak with/see Mum during this period, but staff have provided opportunities to see Mum in the garden socially-distanced. Mum suffers from Parkinson’s disease
and related dementia and mobility issues. We have been trying to find a home that provides both home comforts, caring and understanding staff, coupled with the ability to provide dedicated 24hour care - The Retreat provides all this and more.
All staff are highly motivated and very caring (professional, very good listeners and responsive). The home is small and in a beautiful garden setting, being very peaceful and homely. Immaculately clean and equipped to look after residents 24 hours a day - giving a real family feel.
Mum has settled very quickly, she is no longer worrying all the time coming across as happy and contented. We could not wish for a better home for Mum.

My mother has been a resident here for three years. The care she has received has contributed in large measure to an improvement in her general health and she has been, mostly, quite content. She has always had a tendency to complain if things are not exactly as she wants them, but any issues she has
raised have been dealt with and her concerns addressed with care and understanding. Overall a very good standard.
It has been a difficult time for all of us during these months of isolation and anxiety caused by the coronavirus, Covid-19. Managers and staff have risen to the challenge and taken hard decisions that have paid off. It is a great credit to them that there has been no case reported among staff or residents where other homes in the area have suffered serious outbreaks.

My close friend is happy here. She is not feeling lonely and some days does activities and sits in the garden.
A carer does personal care for her and food and drink.
Safety and security is fine.
Her room is good sized and treated with dignity. All is well.

I came to visit a lady at The Retreat and have been visiting this lady and have known her for a long time. Occasionally I help at a special occasion or a cream tea afternoon.

I just wanted to say that I stayed for lunch on the above date and the homemade quiche and homemade sweet was lovely! A few

residents asked if I would join them for lunch and glad I did! It always seems very tidy and homely and gardens. Lovely!

The care and service provided by the staff at The Retreat are absolutely first-class. Nothing is too much trouble and I am kept informed on each visit as to the well-being of the friend I am visiting.

The Retreat itself has a welcoming atmosphere the minute one walks through the door and residents

are encouraged to maintain as much independence as they are able to manage or join in the social activities. It is in a tranquil setting away from any traffic noise. Also, there are lovely gardens and seating areas for the residents and visitors to sit out in on 'good weather days'.
Everything is (to my untrained eye) spotlessly clean, and the residents are kept clean and comfortable.
Food is very good and cups of tea plentiful.
I have told my family that should I need to go in to care at any time this is where I want to go.

What a lovely place! I went to visit my Grandad around Christmas and I couldn't have been more impressed. The staff were all very friendly and engaging and clearly, genuinely all absolutely love their jobs. They all knew my grandad by name and character and put every effort into making sure he was
happy and well looked after.
The home itself is impeccably clean, tidy, and very welcoming. A lot of effort goes into keeping everyone there occupied and amused and each and every resident we met seemed very content. I don't know what it was I was expecting but I was definitely pleasantly surprised and would not hesitate to recommend this home to anyone looking for somewhere safe for their loved one to call a home away from home. We really couldn't have hoped for a nicer place with a nicer complement of staff...the residents there are indeed very lucky.

The Retreat Care Home is exceptional in that it is a very happy, homely place. All the staff are dedicated, friendly, caring and passionate about their role in looking after the residents. Through these qualities, staff have managed to achieve an excellent atmosphere within the home where the residents
feel happy, safe and secure and 'at home'.

The food at The Retreat is good and plentiful. There is a variety and choice. The Retreat is always very clean and tidy whilst maintaining a lovely homely feeling.

Visitors are made welcome at any time of the day and can join their relative, friend for teas, coffee and lunch.

I feel very confident in the care that my mother receives and I know that she is happy and safe here.

My father was a resident from March 2016 to September 2017. He entered 'The Retreat' after release from hospital following an operation, which left him needing a high level of care. I selected 'The Retreat' due to its location because it was independently run and my confidence in the standard of its
management. During the following year and a half, I never regretted this decision for one minute and came to respect the staff for their personal care and to regard many as friends.
I have no hesitation giving an unqualified recommendation to anyone seeking a high quality of personal care for an elderly relative or friend who are no longer able to care for themselves. As a grade 2 listed building, it lacks the convenience of a modern custom built establishment but gains from the character and history of the house, its quiet sheltered location and fabulous gardens. The key, however, is the owner and her staff to whom I hold a debt of gratitude for their care and the respect they paid my Dad.

I have seen a great improvement in the home recently. Though I have to say it has always been a very happy and contented group of residents who are well cared for, well fed and treated with great dignity.
My friend has been there for 3 years and she has done really well since going in there. She has
put on weight, seems very contented and is grateful for all they do for her.
They are taken out frequently on outings and all special holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Mother's Day, Valentines Day and all their birthdays are honoured with special treats.
As a retired nurse, I am most impressed with the home and the staff who are very caring and friendly.

We moved my mother from another care home less than 2 weeks ago. She has been very unsettled but getting better each day thanks to the care and support from the staff. We chose the home as the staff are fantastic and the living areas are very homely and comfortable. We have yet to enjoy the gardens
but the photos look amazing.

I visit a lady on a Tuesday and also come every first Wednesday of the month with two other people from our Chapel in Plymstock. The staff always seem very friendly. I am normally there in the afternoon and mornings and the home always looks clean, tidy and organised. The gardens are amazing and often
talk to many of the residents while I am visiting a lady I've know for years. I think the home is very good value for money and it's lovely to see different residents making friendships.

I can only comment on what I see in the afternoons/tea time as that is when I visit. The staff are friendly and always available if we need to discuss any issues. Dad seems well cared for and is more than happy with the food. He feels he is rushed in the mornings. It would be good to see a member of
staff sitting and interacting with the residents; I've not seen this on the times I visit. I think they do activities in the morning. Overall, it is a lovely, caring, friendly home and Dad is very happy. They also make a lovely cup of tea.
