Very happy with the care home as I say home. They make my daughter feel like she is home by maintenance putting up photos around her nice big room. The food is very nice, the manger and staff all care about everyone in the home. It's also clean and smells clean. Very good place.

Thank you for taking the trouble to note down the good work of our team. This is always very much appreciated by our management and staff.

My mother stayed at this home recently and she enjoyed her stay. She is 91 and so needs a lot of help with many things, such as dressing, eating, drinking, and she is very frail so she needs help with her mobility. The staff at Choice are very attentive and caring, always smiling and nothing too much
trouble. The food is good and her room and the home is very clean. There is a lovely garden area where you can sit, nestled in the heart of Babbacombe. I highly recommend it.

My friend was here for 5 weeks after discharge from the hospital. It is difficult to find anything good to say about this place but ... the food is good, the facilities are fine - that is it.
The place stinks of urine, there are few staff so residents are wandering around lost and confused. We had
to battle for a raised toilet seat, a padded chair cushion, a call bell, and a tv that worked. After a few days, my normally pristine friend smelled awful - I was told that she had consistently refused a wash, and she had also refused food.
Once, my friend was left to sleep in a chair in the lounge rather than being taken to her bed. The staff only knew of this when we insisted they check the CCTV.
Worst of all though, they ran out of an important tablet that was needed twice a day. It was only because my friend deteriorated rapidly and we investigated, that we found out. She was without it for a week!
I feel sorry for other residents still there. I would give zero stars if it were possible. Avoid!

Going into a care home was never going to be an easy move for my mother. The transition from independent living to a care home is a tough one. My mother was supported by all the staff at Choice to make the transition. She has made her room her own space by bringing a variety of items from her flat,
with the help of the staff and the lovely maintenance man, things have been moved around until she was satisfied with the 'look'. Since day one, mum has enjoyed and praised the food and gradually she has settled in. She has wobbles about being in a care home and the staff listen and support her with great kindness during these times. When the family visit (we all live as a distance, two siblings in Canada) we are made very welcome and always offered refreshments. The staff always have time to answer our phone enquiries about mum. We feel cared for too. Care is the appropriate word for Choice. The staff are warm and available and always have time to listen. They are unsung heros.

I had an impromptu visit to the care home to see a family friend, when I arrived I was greeted by the lovely manager who took me to my friend and made sure that I felt very welcome. During my visit, we looked around the gardens and had a lovely catch up. I was invited to join my friend for lunch,
although I declined, I was amazed at the variety of meal choices offered to the residents. In the afternoon a lovely man visited with rabbits and chinchillas which my friend obviously enjoyed. When I visited my friend at her previous home, she didn't interact with the other residents or join in any activities, it was lovely to see that she obviously feels very at home at Choice and enjoys the social interaction and activities on offer. The staff obviously had time to ensure that the residents needs were met and it was clear to see they were happy in their work.

As a resident here for the last eight months, and soon to move on to a new apartment of my own, I would like to say that at the beginning of my stay here I hated it and the staff.
I had lost my independence and freedom.
Now, however, I can see the reasons why they were for my own benefit.
Now with
the help of the management, staff, and other outside bodies I have managed to get my life back on track, I'm now looking to the future with anticipation.
The care and help that I have been given, I can never repay.
Once again thank you to all the staff and management for all the help and support and care that you have given me.
God bless.

I have visited this care home twice. Each time it was very smelly. The friend I visited yesterday had not been helped to have a wash. The full commode was in the room with the lid off and had not been collected. The person was taken biscuits with her coffee. The biscuits were not on a plate but in the
staff members hand.

When I walked through the front door a lady was wandering around with a very soiled nappy in her hand.

Reply from David Gow-Smith, Director at Choice Care Home

We don't believe this person visited our care home, as there is no record in our visitors book, and if these issues such as a commode not emptied, a resident not washed were true, why wasn't a member of staff informed? We have no record of any such feedback. The comments about poor rooms, when the home had a £600K makeover in 2016, poor activities, when there is an activities coordinator, poor value for money when our charges range from 80 pounds to 100 pounds per 24 hours, less than hotels in our prestigious neighbourhood, suggest to us that the reviewer has not visited our home.

My mother only had a short stay at Choice, only for about 1 month. Unfortunately she passed away during her stay there, but the staff were always polite, friendly and very attentive to my mothers needs. They had a 24/7 visiting policy and so I was able to visit whenever I wanted. I cannot recommend
this care home highly enough, they were brilliant. I just wish my mum had, had more time there to enjoy their facilities and activities.

Current Review Score: 8.2 (8.211)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.2 (8.211) out of 10 for Choice Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.773 for Choice Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (17 Excellents x 5) + (5 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 22 Ratings = 4.773

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.438 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Choice Care Home is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 32 registered maximum number of service users is 6.4. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.4 = 0.313

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
