Cross Park is an attractive Edwardian house set in its own beautiful grounds, close to local amenities and registered with Devon County Council.

Cross Park House is spacious and beautifully decorated for different occasions. I appreciate the coffee the staff give me when I visit. It is not too formal. My 4 grandchildren arrived without warning just when Christmas lunch was being served. We all sat in my husband's room and helped him eat it which
he loved. Individual birthdays are remembered. The staff do a reliable and difficult job caring for people who are physically or mentally ill - who are not always polite. Very tiring. Care homes and their staff are not appreciated or helped by the government. They should be.

My mum settled well even though there were a lot of staff shortages. The carers work really hard, always busy.
I would like to see some facilities for family and friends to make their own drinks, more music played and healthy snacks and drinks given.

Thank you for your feedback. It's really nice to read that your mum has settled in well at Cross Park House. With regards to your concerns about staff shortages - I know we had a few leave over recent months but any shortages on the rota are covered by agency staff as needed. We have been actively recruiting and now have a full compliment of our own team members again at Cross Park. There is a hydration station at Cross Park where residents, team members and visitors are encouraged to help themselves to water and soft drinks. It's difficult for us to make facilities for hot drinks available to visitors as we will always have residents who will be at risk if they have access to hot water. Our care team will always be happy to make you a hot drink upon request of course. I only have 1000 characters available in my reply so can't address all of your points. Please do arrange to speak with our care home manager if at any time you have concerns, questions or suggestions.

Overall, I am happy with the care my mother has been receiving. She appears happy and settled most of the time. However, it would be good to get some direct feedback from the staff on how she is doing, especially following visits from outside agencies (such as physio). Although she enjoys the one-to-one
attention, I feel being isolated from other residents for much of the day cannot be very mentally stimulating. I understand this is her choice, but it would be good for her to have a friend there. The staff are all very friendly and welcoming. I believe from a previous review, the home is due to be refurbished, which would be lovely.

It's great to read that overall you are happy with the care that your mum is receiving. With regards to feedback, you can get that at any time. Please arrange to have a chat with the care home manager and let her know what information you would like to be kept up to date with. The homes will always call if there is a serious issue / concern but more routine day to day care events will be logged in care records but typically we would not proactively contact you. We do encourage residents to join in communal areas but, as you say, residents can choose where to spend their time. We do have a regular programme of activities which includes visits to residents who spend their time in their rooms. The home is not due to be refurbished but there is a process of ongoing maintenance. Kindest regards.

I am very happy with the care my mum has received at Cross Park House. The place is homely. There are activities - particularly music which my mum loves, but in particular the staff are lovely, wonderful and caring people.

My father arrived at Crossparks on January 25th from the hospital. He was very difficult behaviour-wise towards the carers. I felt very upset and worried about the staff and my dad, he has a history of being difficult. However, the staff were so good with Dad and so caring and thoughtful towards me
and my husband. We can't praise them enough! Dad is now settled and happy.

My dad went into Cross Park for one month of respite care and has been welcomed to stay longer if he needs it. The home itself is lovely and the staff are really helpful to me and my brother. Caring is very good, nothing is too much trouble and they accommodate all our needs and requests. All of the
residents looked really happy and Dad settled in with ease. I'd recommend Cross Park and hope that should we continue to need them, Dad will stay!

When deciding on a care home for my nan in March 2022, I viewed some more modern homes. However, at Cross Park, it was clear that they encouraged residents into the common areas and to engage in a range of activities. The garden and dining room are lovely. As it is my nan prefers to remain in her room
and is very set in her ways but many of the staff engage with her from the cleaners to the laundry lady. She is always clean and tidy and the staff try to encourage her to drink more. I know she is well looked after and cared for which gives me peace of mind. Her room looks out onto the road where I live so it's an added bonus that she is so close. I am welcomed whenever I visit and the staff have been kind to me and my nan as we've been dealing with my dad's ill health and his subsequent passing. Thanks for taking good care of my nan.

Very happy with the service provided. Though staff are overworked and underpaid as are most homes in the UK.

Hello Linda. Thank you for this feedback. It's lovely to know that you are happy with the service provided. I note your comments with regard to the care team being overworked and underpaid. This is a very broad statement. We do not believe that our care teams are overworked. We recruit to ensure that we employ enough people to enable our care team members to work their contracted hours - and they can request more if more are available. If there are gaps on the rota we have a number of contracts with agency staff providers who can provide fully qualified and vetted cover at short notice (or planned in advance) as needed. With regards the the issue of rates of pay. We certainly try to remain competitive in this regard, ensuring that we are amongst at least the top 25% of employers in our areas (Devon and Cornwall). To be able to pay more we would need to charge more for the care provided. It's a difficult balance to achieve. Kindest regards.

Mum had recently broken her wrist, just over a year ago, and was suffering a UTI on first becoming a resident, which complicated transition to the home. I feel the staff could have been just a little more alert to the needs of a new arrival, but I understand the difficulties.
Once the staff got to
know Mum, care has been absolutely first class. How they do it, I don't know. Mum is always clean and bright. Social Services commented on the quality of her skin to me, which says a lot. Mum interacts well with them even with her limited ability.
The manager and assistant are professional, competent and approachable; they clearly know each resident on a personal basis. Open meetings are held with residents and relatives to discuss events, happenings and any concerns. The home is well run and clean.
The décor of the property is dated, but not sufficient to detract from care.
Mum likes her food and it is very good. Mum was once the best cook in Devon, so that's high praise indeed!

When you care for someone at home for a long time, it's difficult to give them over to someone else's care and trust

General care and patience of the staff remains excellent, despite a turnover of staff. In three and a half years of Mum residing in Cross Park House Care Home, still never heard anything where the staff deal with residents that is not respectful/dignified.
I can appreciate that it is difficult for
residents' "group outings" in Torbay (cold weather or 'tourist' issues) but I know Mum (and a few others) would benefit from trips out, more time in the gardens - i.e. a break from 'routine'.

I just wanted to share my positive experience whilst visiting my lovely nan at Cross Park House Care Home. I accompanied my grandad and the first thing that struck me was how welcoming the staff were. The staff have built up a great rapport with my grandad whilst he visits my nan, this has been very
reassuring for him, as I can't imagine how difficult it must be for him to trust strangers to care for the love of his life. Nan seems really settled, calm and comfortable. The standard of personal care is high, from coordinating her outfits to styling her hair. The home itself is light and clean, sitting with Nan in the lounge felt like we were relaxing at home, not at all clinical. The carers came around with a tea trolley and a good selection of biscuits, we didn't feel like we were in the way at all. I am looking forward to visiting in the warmer weather so we can enjoy the garden together.

My mother is a new resident at Cross Park, she has Dementia and this is the first time in 75 years she has lived apart from her husband. Due to my father's old age (91) and a serious heart condition, his most recent admittance to emergency care in the hospital was a wake-up call and realisation he could
no longer care for her at home. Historical memories and awful stories of 'Residential Care' filled my dad with dread. I took him to visit Cross Park as it was on our short list due to close proximity to his home and therefore regular visits. The manager had taken personal time out to ensure she showed my dad around while constantly reassuring him. The moment he was shown a pretty light and airy room I noticed a change in his demeanour and realised he liked what he saw. Gentle support for my dad has been as important as the specialist care, my mum, is now receiving. Dad has been able to share meals on his visits including Christmas Day. Cross Park staff thank you so much.

Familiar first-name greetings from Cross Park House staff members always start off my visit to an elderly friend (resident here now for several years). During my visit, her general mien and positive responses during our meetings/chit-chat confirm the excellence of the care she receives. And supporting
this, I see the occasional toing and froing between staff members and other residents.
I always leave, knowing she couldn't have better care.
