My 98-year-old mother was in Winslow House from September 2024 until she passed away in her sleep in January 2025. I cannot speak too highly of the care, attention and consideration she received from all the staff. Their patience with her every day was exemplary and I'm so pleased she spent her final
months of life in such safe surroundings.

Mostly the care assistants are helpful and caring, but there are a couple not so helpful eg not passing on information to management on occasion when asked. My mother says the food is sometimes disappointing. She and I find her room very nice and she is happy and most of the carers are very pleasant
to her.

My mother moved to Winslow House in February 2021 and remained there until her death at age 99 in December 2022. Throughout her stay, she was well looked after and despite her severe mobility problems, she was happy and comfortable there. The care staff were very committed and Mother quickly made friends
with them. From my perspective, I was reassured that Mother was safe in their care. I and my sister were most grateful to the managers and staff.

While the midday meal is usually acceptable, the tea/afternoon meal is very poor - dry grated cheese or ham sandwich followed by rice pudding served with custard (a strange combination).

Reply from Ann Doran, Director at Winslow House

There are multiple choices available for evening meals should the resident be not keen on the menu of the day, a member of staff will be more than happy to help with this.

I find that generally, the staff at Winslow House have been very sensitive to the needs of my cousin as well as to those who are responsible for him. I am also very grateful to how Winslow House behaved when he first entered care with his sister and those of us who were his Power of Attorneys and could
not access funds for payment at the time. Winslow was extremely patient with us. If there was one criticism I have - it is that particularly during lockdown I think the staff could have been a little more proactive in communicating how specific residents were faring. My cousin, had an abscess on his lip which was both giving him pain and making it difficult to eat and I think it would have been helpful if we had had more discussion when this first arose. I do understand that there were limitations but keeping his relatives informed would have been helpful given that he is unable to communicate on the telephone.

Reply from Ann Doran, Administrator/Owner at Winslow House

Thank you for taking the time to complete this review. It has definitely been a very challenging year for our staff and residents.
I am so sorry that the communication regarding the abscess wasn't as proactive as we would have liked it to be. The whole process with GP and liaising with a Community Dentist took longer than expected due to the pandemic. However, we are so glad that we managed to get it sorted in the end and your cousin is so much happier.

Everything about the home was to my father’s liking. He was there for just under 3-years. The staff were caring people, and it felt like home for my dad. The grounds were kept well. Covid provided issues for all homes, but Winslow House helped as much as they could with access.

Staff at the home have worked incredibly hard in difficult circumstances over the last year or so. I hope now the residents can begin to look forward to some more freedoms and visitors over the coming months.

My mothe recently moved to Winslow House and has settled very quickly. An initial respite period gave her the chance to make 'a choice' with regards to her care. The staff have shown kindness, consideration and empathy, which has enabled her to settle quickly. Activities are arranged daily, which Mum
looks forward to. The decor is comfortable, old fashioned, relaxing and tasteful. Food menus are displayed and various diets catered for. The grounds of Winslow House are beautiful and enable residents to sit outside in the warmer months. A bit like a cruise ship on land. Family members are made very welcome at any time.

The care was excellent but the management team have no idea how to deal with relatives going through the bereavement process.
I questioned what they had done and was told that my dying father should be moved because of 'the tone of my email'.

Winslow House is a very friendly and welcoming home. The staff are always cheerful and it is possible to visit at any time. My great aunt is a very independent person and it was always going to be difficult for her to accept going into a home but she has settled in very well and is a lot happier.

The care that my mother received was very good. She felt happy, safe and cared for. The staff are friendly and there was always lots going on for her to join in with if she wished. The home is kept clean and the food is very good.
I would definitely be very happy to recommend this rest home.

My mother was a resident for seven years at the above care home and received excellent and caring attention from the staff. She seemed to be content and at the end of her life received dignified and caring attention.
I think Winslow House is an excellent care home, particularly because of the staff
and the general ambience. Also, it was possible to visit at any time.

Very impressed with the overall care and attention to needs of a person living in the home. The only complaint that my sister in law says that she is rushed to get up in the morning.

After a slow start, my mother-in-law is now settling down. She can be difficult and a fussy eater but we are getting to grips with meals now. She only likes plain food so getting staff not to put sauces etc on food. She is not good at mingling, but the staff have worked very very hard to get her to
integrate. Staff are excellent.

On the whole, my mother seems happy with her care. Because of her condition it is difficult to find out what she has been involved with (memory problems) and I think that sometimes she doesn't take part in the activities because her friend doesn't! The staff, however, are aware of this and do encourage
her as much as possible. There have been occasions recently when the room cleaning has been less than satisfactory and the bathroom has not been provided with a towel. Staff have always responded when I have questioned this.

Current Review Score: 7.5 (7.536)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.5 (7.536) out of 10 for Winslow House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.125 for Winslow House is calculated as follows: ( (7 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 4.125

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.411 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Winslow House is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 35 registered maximum number of service users is 7. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 7 = 0.286

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
