Court House Retirement Home in Cheddar offers residential care to older people who are able to fill their room with their own furniture to make them feel at home.

Situated with lovely views over the Mendip Hills, the care home is in the centre of Cheddar village with easy access to shops, a library, chemist and doctors surgery.

Refreshments and snacks are offered throughout the day to residents and their guests. Menus include a vegetarian option and home cooked, well balanced meals which are, when possible, made with locally sourced fresh produce.

Court House is a family run business and has been for 30 years. The aim was to create somewhere that residents feel at home and not 'in a home'. Therefore the staff do not wear uniforms and there are no noticeboards all over the walls. The furniture is chosen so that it fits in with the surroundings and is normal furniture and not high wing backed chairs that may be found in many care settings.

Residents often enjoy meeting in the drawing room before lunch where a glass of sherry is provided.

Highly-skilled staff offer as little or as much care as is required by residents. A care plan system that is regularly reviewed and daily chats with the manager and other staff identify residents' individual needs.

The whole team at Court House are so kind, caring and show very high levels of care and attention to residents, day and night. This results in warm, comfortable, friendly and relaxed atmosphere - which is so welcoming. The gardens and location are a real plus too. It feels like residents really are
amongst friends here.

Thank you so much for your lovely review of Court House. It is most important to us that we can create a lovely atmosphere and that our staff are kind and caring so it's great to hear that we are achieving this. I know that your mum appreciates the fact that Court House is in the heart of the village/community and is able to get out and about to the shops and enjoy the amenities that are available.

In this day and age, it's a real pleasure for us to find Court House Retirement Home in Cheddar, our mother spent her last few years there in the opulence of this beautiful country house and grounds.
I can only describe the home as a five-star hotel, every need is taken care of physically and mentally,
with an afternoon quiz or entertainment there is always something interesting going on. The staff are caring and give a first-rate service to the residents, they are all well-trained and courteous. Thank you for caring and looking after our mother so well in her final years.

My 95-year-old mother required respite care following cataract surgery. This entailed regular eye drops for several weeks post the operation (which she would not have managed at home). She is fairly independent but suffers with arthritis and poor sight so finds it a struggle to adapt to new situations.
Court House Retirement Home staff were very understanding of the situation and looked after her with a good degree of professionalism. She settled into a routine at Court House very well and then found it strange to return to her home! It was especially appreciated that staff went the extra mile to administer eye drops.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review for us Gareth. It was a delight to have your mother stay with us at Court House, such a lovely lady. We are very glad that we were able to help her whilst she was recovering from her eye procedure. We are always here and would welcome Mum if she ever wanted or needed to come for a short break in the future.
Best wishes, Chris.

My mother moved into Court House Retirement Home, over two years ago having lived, locally, independently in her own flat. When I decided it was time for Mum to have some help and care for her well-being, a room was booked. Within two weeks, Court House completely redecorated and recarpeted her room.
It looked so fresh and bright. Her belongings were put into her room, no objection at all to putting up pictures and using her own curtains. Her new room looked the same as the one she left, making the transition seamless. The help and guidance given, not only for Mum but for myself, was superb. She settled in straight away. It seems a long time ago since Mum moved into Court House. During this time, she has been happy and her care has been excellent.
Not only have the staff given so much time and energy into her care, they have also supported me on the odd occasion when I've had a meltdown.
During Covid, I felt confident that Mum was in safe hands. I wholeheartedly recommend Court House.

Thank you Sarah for your very kind words. It was so nice to be able to do what we did to make Mum's transition from her own home to Court House work so well. As you said, Mum settled in straight away and felt like part of the Court House family really quickly. We are happy for residents to bring as much of their own furniture as they want to in order to make them feel as comfortable as possible. We can be as flexible as we need to be to make this happen. We were happy to support you as much as you supported us during the difficult Covid times, we all had to work as a team to get through it. I am pleased to hear how well the staff are caring for Mum, that is what we are here for. I feel that we have a great team all round. Most of our residents join us after hearing about us from word of mouth, so we appreciate that you are able to recommend us to others. Thanks again, Chris.

My mother-in-law is fortunate enough to be living at Court House Retirement Home, in one of the courtyard properties. She has a lovely home with a much-valued view of the gardens.
From the very first moment I visited the home, I knew she would be well cared for. Staff are considerate, helpful and polite
and always on hand with tea and biscuits! The owner undoubtedly goes above and beyond - he is always contactable and so supportive. I really cannot stress how important this has been for the family.
I feel happy knowing that my mother-in-law has such kind people looking after her.

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us such a positive review. We are so happy that your mother-in-law has settled in so well at Court House. The courtyard is lovely and the views onto the courtyard, out onto our beautiful gardens and then onto the Mendip Hills are special. I am always happy to read lovely comments about the staff team, they are very important and are the ones that are able to put the 'care' in care home. I will feed back your lovely words to them, they deserve the praise. We are of course always happy that our residents' families are pleased with the way their relatives are being looked after. Thanks again.

Court House Retirement Home is a home-from-home. The team are all very caring and kind and do everything they can for those in their care. A good programme of activities, in the comfy lounge and a wide choice of home-cooked meals served in the dining room or in their own room. The lovely garden is delightful
too!

Thank you Gill for this lovely review. Since we started this family care home in 1986 we have always worked hard at ensuring we created a comfortable, homely environment, it sounds like we are achieving that! I am very proud of the staff here at Court House, I watch them with residents on a daily basis and it is very obvious how much they actually 'care' for the residents, this is so important to me. Our cooks also care about the meals they cook and also put a lot of thought and work into the meals, everything is homemade from scratch and locally sourced.
We also invest a lot in our gardens as we know that many of our residents come from their own homes with lovely gardens. It is important that we are able to provide this beautiful outdoor space that our residents can enjoy and be proud of.

Moving my mother into Court House Retirement Home made a difficult decision and transition very easy! From the welcome we received on looking around, to the transition period and the move itself couldn't have been better and/or more straightforward. And like a proverbial duck to water, my mother has
settled, thoroughly enjoyed what Court House provides and felt right "at home" quickly. This is not accidental - it reflects on the dedication, attitude and training of management and staff who run a properly homely residence for those who live there, with personal attention to detail and care for their needs. Nothing is too much trouble. We feel so lucky to have found an opening with perfect timing.

Thank you for your kind words and lovely review. I am so glad to see that your mother has settled so well, so quickly, I agree that it is a big decision for someone to make to move into a care home. We do therefore try very hard to ensure a new resident is welcomed and made to feel at ease as quickly as possible. Your mother is such a lovely person and does indeed make the most of our lovely community here at Court House, we are all so glad that she chose to come and live here.

My father was a resident at Court House Retirement Home for a period of approximately three years. He received extremely good care and attention from the outset when he was still relatively mobile to the last period of his life when the carers at Court House did everything to meet his needs, notwithstanding
the extreme challenges of the Covid lockdown. He enjoyed the house and dining room and the garden in particular. At Court House, they managed to create a feeling of home from home and were accommodating and flexible to changing needs and requirements. I can't thank them enough.

Thank you so much for your kind words and the lovely review. The most important thing for us is to know that our residents are receiving the very best care possible and I am very happy that you feel your dad's needs were met so well. We do work hard in trying to ensure that the environment is as comfortable and homely as possible. I am glad to hear that you feel we have achieved this. The pandemic was a difficult time for all, especially for those living in and with relatives in care homes, I know that the staff at Court House went above and beyond to ensure that the residents were as protected as possible from the virus whilst still making sure that their social and other needs were met.

I stayed at the Court House Retirement Home for respite care for two and a half weeks. The staff made me very welcome and were kind and considerate and so very helpful when I was in a lot of pain and as I improved. I can't thank them enough. The house was always clean and tidy with a lovely lounge.
My room had a lounge and bedroom with ensuite across in the Courtyard and the garden was very pleasant even in the winter months. The residents were really lovely to talk to and I enjoyed my stay with them all very much.

My mother has recently settled into Court House very happily. She has a lovely room opening onto a beautiful garden. She feels safe and well cared for. The Staff are friendly, caring and respectful. There are many activities taking place to give residents stimulation. My mother says she never feels
lonely. There is a very varied menu from which residents can make their choices. The ethos is to help all residents feel this is their home and that all will be done to make them feel comfortable and their individual needs met. Visiting family and friends are always offered a cup of tea or coffee and a tray will be brought to the resident’s room, with biscuits. Court House is not a modern, purpose-built home, and as such has a relaxed family feel to it. I would thoroughly recommend Court House.
