Hazelwell Lodge is a 50 capacity care home with a highly-experienced team, skilled in looking after the needs of people living with dementia and mental health conditions.

Many of the rooms have en-suite facilities, Smart TVs and doors leading out into an enclosed secure garden. Residents are encouraged to personalise their rooms to support with familiarity and provide a homely feel.

Residents are supported to retain as much independence as possible and comfortable, having a number of lounge areas to choose from, a summer house, bar, small man-made beach, and private gardens with relaxing water features.

Built up of 3 open units, Residents have the choice of where to spend time. It maybe in the 'Bay' unit in the bar or large conservatory, The 'Lilies' unit in the hair and beauty salon, or in the beautiful bright open plan 'Orchids' unit in the lounge or activities room that doubles as a Cinema and snoozeleen area.

One of the home's ways of maintaining a good level of physical and mental fitness amongst individuals is to provide a varied person centred activities programme, consisting of both in-house and outdoor hobbies, interests and entertainments.

Hazelwell Lodge believe that the care home is only as good as the staff who work there. At recruitment stage, only candidates that hold the same values as the home are successful. Staff at the home treat individuals with dignity & respect and adopt a Person Centred approach at all times.

My grandmother has been a resident at Hazelwell Lodge for several years and I couldn't be happier that she is cared for here. I go and visit her every few months when I'm in the area and she is always clean, content and well cared for. The staff are very kind, caring and professional, even when dealing
with very challenging residents and everyone is afforded great dignity and respect. The rooms are clean and there are lots of activities put on to keep residents engaged and entertained. My latest visits were around Christmas, and the decorations were simply beautiful. A big thank you to the staff for their exceptional hard work and the care and kindness they show to my grandmother.

I am very happy that my wife is a resident at Hazelwell Lodge. She has had several issues since taking up residence all of which have been dealt with with care and compassion. My wife can be very difficult at times but I have never seen anything but kindness by the staff towards her. I also receive

My father-in-law was staying here for a year before he sadly passed away very recently. The care he recieved was of a very high standard. He really didn't want to go into a home but after just a few weeks he felt right at home. The staff are very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Various activities
meant there was something for everybody. We initially had a few issues with food as he was gluten-free and also on a soft food diet. But this was sorted very quickly and the staff spoke to us in depth about his dietary needs. Can't thank them enough for everything they did for him.

Hugely impressed with Hazelwell Lodge. The staff consistently offer a supportive and genuinely caring environment. My mother, whose needs are complex and include Alzheimer's, has been at Hazelwell for some time now and is completely comfortable and secure.

From the moment Dad entered the home his needs have been met. Everyone is so caring, kind, considerate and helpful. Putting Dad's wants/needs is very much the home's ethos. Despite Dad's challenges, especially his behaviour they have never complained, just continued to support him. There is a brilliant
programme of events and activities, tailored to everyone’s abilities. His room is well appointed with everything he needs and the whole home is bright, welcoming and still retains a homeliness. I would highly recommend Hazelwell to anyone looking for a care home for their loved one with dementia. They are the epitome of the word ‘care’.

My mum went to live at Hazelwell Lodge in November 2022 due to her dementia. Not an easy decision for me but her transition was seamless due to the professionalism of the staff. I have always found the staff to be caring and attentive to all aspects of Mum's well-being and are very approachable. Sadly,
Mum passed away at the beginning of April 2023. Her care and comfort were very well managed by the staff.

All the staff are wonderful, they are so attentive and caring. Nothing is too much trouble. My mum is quite negative but they constantly try and cheer her up. She enjoyed her trip out to the pub recently! The food is amazing with different choices. The Sunday roast looked amazing. Mum enjoys the jacuzzi
bubble bath here regularly. Many thanks to all the wonderful hardworking staff.

Mum went into the home 2 weeks before the 1st lockdown and we as a family were very worried how mum would cope, but the home ensured we had face time whenever we wanted to see and speak to mum this was so so good for us as well as mum. We were concerned that the home was not that local to us but we
should never have been as we have found that everyone at the home is one big family we couldn't of asked for better care and mum is very happy which is all we can ask for.

My dad was a resident at Hazelwell Lodge from January – February 2022. He had two wounds develop in this time which were completely ill-managed and ended in an emergency hospital stay for iv antibiotics and sepsis which was completely missed and I had to chase. During this time I was sent invoices besides
not having a contract. The care home just seems far too big. Too many staff moving around with not enough knowledge/consistency to be able to understand and observe the individuals. I found out from the care notes I requested that the home also had scabies but had not told me, besides me taking my 12-month-old daughter into visit. It was noted that the district nurse had told them they should tell me. I also saw that my dad had accidentally locked himself in a bathroom, in a home of 50 people they struggle to find lost people and then could not find a key to open the door. Some individual staff members were lovely but they seemed to be let down from those above.

At Hazelwell Lodge we pride ourselves in our care and commitment to our residents and their families.
In compliance with our home's complaints policy, a full investigation of the concerns was raised, and we identified and acknowledged that improvements within our team’s communication were required. In addition, we feel a more person-centred approach and timelier response from outside health care professionals to support, diagnose and treat may have also been beneficial in this situation.

To improve our services, we held staff meetings and supervisions to discuss the events, outcomes, and solutions. More robust policies and procedure have been reviewed and implemented along with additional training specific training to improve our lines of communication internally and externally.

Full and transparent records and reports following the investigation, were submitted to CQC and ASC and date there have been no compliance issues raised in this regard. Records and reports have been saved on their systems for information only.

We respect the right of opinion of the author with regards to the issues raised.
And we welcome genuine feedback of experiences, even if it may be uncomfortable, as we strive to continually improve the service we provide to our residents and their families.

My mother was admitted to Hazelwell Lodge in May 2016 with advanced Dementia. Sadly she passed away in March 2017. However, throughout her stay, we found all aspects of Hazelwell excellent.
The cleanliness of all areas, especially bathrooms, bedrooms etc...
Huge selection of entertainment and trips
for residents. The overwhelming feeling that the staff were treating my mother as a member of their own family, this gave me huge reassurances during her stay.

My mum moved into Hazelwell Lodge with extreme dementia and was also very unwell. All of the staff, management and owner were amazing. The care was definitely to the highest standard. Everyone was very kind, caring, sympathetic, knowledgeable and efficient no matter what their role.
We changed mums
room around, put up lots of photos etc (with help from the handyman) and made it her own, this was welcomed. We were there all day, every day and this was welcomed too and because of this, we got to know the staff, management and residents really well.
Sadly mum was so poorly, she was put on an end of life plan, again this was dealt with to the highest level. When mum passed away, the night staff were there with us and ensured that every need was met with support and sympathy.
Hazelwell treats residents as individuals. They recognise that this is their home and that different things make different people happy. Residents all receive the utmost respect and care and we are so grateful to everyone there.

My mum was admitted to Hazelwell Lodge toward the end of Nov 16. Shortly thereafter my mum was placed on end of life care. Sadly, mum passed away early Dec 16. Although her time at Hazelwell Lodge was not very long the staff and management at Hazelwell far exceeded my expectations. They went above and
beyond their duties. They, without exception, displayed professionalism, care and more importantly compassion. The staff and management at Hazelwell Lodge ensured my mum's last days were comfortable and she passed with the utmost dignity.

Claire Kingdon

Job Title: Registered Manager

Joined: 1996

Claire has 30 years’ experience in the Social Care sector, 28 of which have been specialising in Dementia Care to include time in consulting externally.


Her origin as an apprentice Health Care Assistant drives her passion and success rate in identifying young people who have the ability to be successful in the Social care sector making her the perfect role model for any young person with similar aspirations, which has been a major benefit to the Home.

Michelle Trott

Job Title: Deputy Manager

Michelle is the deputy manager at Hazelwell Lodge and supports Claire on a daily basis with the overall management of the home. Michelle has worked within the social care sector for almost 20 years. Her initial experience was working with people living with a learning difficulty before coming to Hazelwell Lodge aprox 18yrs ago as a domestic assistant and then working her way up into the deputy manager role.

Michelle has a passion for the work that she does and enjoys spending time with the residents. She takes pride in her work ensuring individual needs are met accordingly whilst maintaining individuals’ self-worth, and quality of life.

Sam Wall

Job Title: Administrator

Joined: 2012

Sam's initial career commenced within business and admin.
Sam joined Hazelwell Lodge in November 1999 as a Health Care assistant before progressing to a senior care role. Sam left the company 4 years later to peruse experience within a nursing environment however her heart was always at Hazelwell and she returned to us in 2012.
Sam's qualifications and experience within the sector has set her up well to successfully carry out her current role of Administrator. She is also one of the homes 2 manual handling instructors.

Marie was appointed as the Head of care of The Lilies Unit 4yrs ago. before this, she worked at Hazelwell Lodge as a night shift leader for 2 years.

Jordan Crocker

Job Title: Head of Care (Orchids Unit)

Joined: 2014

Jordan is the Head of Care for the Orchids unit. Jordan has 10 years' experience in the Health & Social Care sector.
Jordan joined Hazelwell lodge in 2014 following a short career in childcare. Jordan works hard, which has enabled her to gain the necessary qualifications through the apprenticeship scheme to support her progression into her current role.
Jordan supports 17 Residents with varying needs. Jordan is one of the first points of contact for residents & relatives within the Orchids, Meeting at Viewing and pre-assessments stage, leading and supporting individuals through the transition into the home, as well as working with everyone to create & review person centered assessments and care plans for the individuals she is responsible for. The Head of Care role is integral to the effective running of the home.
Jordan prides herself on her organisational skills and good working relations with external healthcare professionals.


Holly

Holly Hewitt

Job Title: Head Of Care (Bay Unit)

Joined: 2020

Newly appointed in 2024 as the Head of Care for the Bay unit. Holly is responsible for the overall care management of the 19 bed unit.
Holly's experience within the sector started at Hazelwell Lodge 4years ago when she was recruited as a health care assistant. Throughout this time Holly has worked hard, learning from others, and developing through the apprenticeship scheme to fulfil a shift leader role and now the Head of Care role.

Sharon joined Hazelwell Lodge in 2023 after spending many years caring for her family, including her disabled brother. Her varied career has also included roles as a secretary, office manager, and building society cashier. Lewis Wells

Lewis began his career in the NHS as a Healthcare Assistant on a stroke ward, where he developed a strong passion for supporting patients through meaningful activities. This led lewis to transition into activity coordination, and in March 2024, he joined Hazelwell Lodge as an Activity Coordinator. Lewis currently working towards the Level 2 qualification in Activities Provision to further develop his skills and enhance the experiences he offer to the residents.

Nai has a degree in Psychology and always particularly enjoyed the neuroscience modules that included learning about Dementia and other neurological conditions.
She began her career in Social care at Hazelwell Lodge as a activity coordinator after moving from Kent to Somerset in April 2024,
Whilst working at Hazelwell Lodge Nai has continued to further her learning, and is hoping to gain a Master's degree within the next two years.
