Milford Manor is a specialist dementia care home for up to 30 people, set in a delightful location just a short walk from the River Bourne.

Widely recognised for its innovative approach to dementia and draws on the work of specialist mental health and dementia centres like Stirling, Surrey and Bradford universities to translate their research findings into practical ways to help and support people with a mental health illness and or complex dementia disease.

Milford Manor cares for vulnerable adults and older people who may require up to 24-hour care for mental health challenges and complex dementia.

This service is purposefully designed to reduce any confusion or anxiety residents may feel – giving the residents maximum freedom and choice in daily lives, encouraging to do as much independently, whilst involving families and friends as often as possible.

All staff, at every level, receive specific specialist training and are supported by an experienced senior team who in turn are supported by a multi-disciplinary mental health support service.

This is a service that often achieves positive sustainable results when others have not. Regular groups are held to allow relatives to offer feedback while also providing information and emotional support to the wider family members of every resident.

All staff are friendly and helpful and I feel my Stepdad is being well cared for here. His room is clean and spacious but doesn't have his own ensuite within it, which would have been better. He is fairly able bodied so I believe he's able to take himself to the bathroom along the hallway. He appears
clean and dressed appropriately.

My husband's care is excellent. The staff are friendly, well trained, very caring and most notably patient with everyone that I can see. I am informed when anything is relevant to the care and I feel confident that everything possible is being done to help my husband.

The care home staff are truly dedicated to making the lives of their residents as safe as possible. Although the single rooms are basic they are clean and comfortable. The main lounge, dining room and conservatory are also exceptionally clean, warm and welcoming. Refreshments are available throughout
the day for residents and their visitors. Varied, nutritious cooked meals are provided including fresh fruit daily. I cannot praise the staff enough.

Mum is CHC funded so we are struggling to move her out.
They did not treat Mum's very badly infected toes. She falls regularly and even ended up in hospital overnight with a concussion.
She has lost a great deal of weight.
When I visit she is usually inappropriately dressed to be taken out. Her
things go missing regularly.

Reply from Jo McMahon, Service Manager at Milford Manor

Thank you for your constructive feedback as we take all comments and reviews very seriously and in the case of your Mother I am aware the situation has been dealt with involving the GP who regularly visits the home. In relation to the falls you mentioned, the team at Milford Manor do monitor all our lovely residents due to the complexity of the diagnosis of all our lovely residents at Milford. Many residents do suffer with limited and unsteady mobility, which in turn causes a higher level of falls for some. I personally know and have supported your Mother and I know she particularly enjoys choosing her own clothes daily but I will be sure to speak to the team and feedback your concerns. Going forward if you would like to arrange a meeting with myself or the Registered Manager of Milford we would be more than happy to meet with you. Please just contact me via my email. At Wessex Care we value all feedback, we always reflect, learn and action any areas raised.

The staff have been excellent and thorough during the COVID epidemic and communication has been first class. The home has been patient and considerate when we were sorting out the resident troublesome families.

My wife has lewy body dementia and has been in Milford Manor care home since January 2021. The care and treatment that my wife receives at the home has been excellent. Her room is clean and of a reasonable size with a pleasant view into the garden. Arrangements for chiropody and personal care (e.g.
hairdresser, manicure etc.) are made in a timely fashion and reasonably priced. I am contacted in good time if my wife has an accident and the circumstances explained. She is always checked over for any injuries and put on 72 hours surveillance if she might have suffered an internal injury (e.g. concussion). I am able to visit and have video calls with my wife at regular times so I can maintain a good level of contact.

Overall my experience of Milford Manor has been very positive and I have been satisfied with the care provided to my wife at the home. I also feel comfortable that I can contact the home at any time to enquire how my wife is doing and have a phone chat with her most days.

I find the staff friendly and caring. The atmosphere is calm and the facilities are outstanding. The level of staff training is excellent and is ongoing. My relative I feel is in the best place for their condition, receiving care that I was unable to carry on giving due to work constraints. The staff
contact me at work or home if there is anything they feel I need to know about my relatives, such as GP visits and sickness. The home is preparing for a full refurbishment of all the residential rooms, and in communal areas, the carpets are being replaced, where possible, with laminate flooring to ease cleaning.

My husband is now having care as he is bed-bound. He has a morphine patch on his shoulder to reduce back pain that paracetamol no longer is enough for.
He eats well, food is pureed and fed to him by a carer, who is very careful and understanding of his health problems.
Not able to partake in any of
the many activities.

When visiting the home we have always been made welcome. My father has always seemed well cared for. On a couple of occasions, he has had a fall and we have always been kept well informed of his progress.

The diet for my Mum had been dramatically altered for the better. Mum is vegetarian. Soya is used (for example) and vegetarian jelly is being provided too as a sweet treat. Thank you to the chef!

Reply from Matthew Airey, Managing Director at Milford Manor

Thank you for your second review, the previous one posted on the 24th Jan 2017. The team will be delighted with your very supportive comments, in particular, those regarding the provision of a specialist diet.
The team really do appreciate all feedback whether it is constructive criticism or high praise. This really helps to identify learning and development points and boost morale in a complex and demanding area of care provision. Thank you again for your continued support.

Current Review Score: 8.5 (8.485)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.5 (8.485) out of 10 for Milford Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.8 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.735 for Milford Manor is calculated as follows: ( (26 Excellents x 5) + (7 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 34 Ratings = 4.735

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.75 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Milford Manor is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 6 = 0.5

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
