My Dad passed away just six days after his stay at Kingsmead. We felt compelled to withdraw him because he was so lonely and unhappy in this care home. My Dad was placed in the dementia ward even though the dementia team certified he didn't have dementia. Sadly, this meant that he suffered constant
interruption by dementia residents wandering into his room in a very confused state and distressing my Dad.
Some of Dad's carers were lovely and genuinely caring, whilst some of their supervisors were rude and uncompassionate to my dad's needs. Visiting was so restrictive (one hour per day) that my Dad was left alone for hour after hour, he was a very social individual and this environment was damaging to him. The restricted visitation was due to staffing levels, not Covid controls.
Overall, my family were deeply disappointed by the level of care in Kingsmead, we wanted the best level of care for his end of life, and would not recommend it to others.

Reply from Nicky Bickerstaffe, Home Manager at Kingsmead Care Home

We were very sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing. Please accept our heartfelt condolences.
I am sorry we were not able to meet your wishes to accommodate your Dad on the nursing floor. I would be very willing to meet with you to explain our reasons, but it would be inappropriate for me to discuss personal details of his care on this forum.
I am glad that you found some of our staff genuinely caring. Whilst I can say with confidence that this applies to all of our staff, I accept your feedback and we will use it to reflect on our approaches.

Restrictions on visiting apply to all care homes across the country with some variations required by local public health bodies. I can assure you that at no time have we allowed staffing pressures to limit the duration or frequency of visiting that we offer at Kingsmead.
Thank you for your feedback.

My relative had a wonderful level of care and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. During the pandemic they have done everything possible to keep contact between the resident and her sister with phone calls and photos. Wonderful caring staff.

My husband has been in Kingsmead for nearly 4 years. I am very pleased with the care he receives because he is happy and that's the main thing. The carers are all very friendly and the manager is very approachable.

The staff are brilliant. The care for the residents over this challenging year has been safety the top priority. The activities coordinator has been great at arranging video calls to dad and sending regular photos of what he has been up to, this has been a great help to the family in these difficult
times of lockdown as we haven't been able to visit. Keep up the great job you all do and stay safe.

This is the second time my mother in law has been to Kingsmead for respite. She is always extremely happy to come but sad to leave. Such a clean and friendly care home where nothing is too much trouble. Looking forward to her next stay at Christmas.

My mother has been a resident for nearly a year. Generally, her experience has been positive. There will always be times when she is happier than others. Carers are usually very caring, but I personally feel one or two are in the wrong job. Overall the care is very good.

I can't recommend Kingsmead Care Home enough. My Dad has been there since February and all the staff is professional, expert, friendly, but most of all incredibly kind. I feel that they genuinely care about him and do all they can to make his life as good as possible. We are so grateful that the care
home has been happy to do the extra work and logistics to allow garden visits too. A huge thank you to the whole team.

The staff at Kingsmead have been amazing at caring for my father during this difficult time. They have treated him with great care and respect, ensuring his health conditions are well managed and informing us of any update to his care when required. They have done their utmost to keep the residents
entertained and connected to the family, arranging FaceTime calls and spending time with him while he was confined to bed, printing off photos we had sent so he could have them in his room and generally keeping his spirits up. It was a great joy to be able to see him on his 93rd birthday, it made his day to see us! It is a true testament to the dedication of all the staff that they have had no cases of COVID-19 in the home. They are an amazing group of dedicated and genuinely caring people. They are my heroes.

Very comforting to know that my dad is safe and being well looked after. The staff are always very caring and supportive. The manager is very easy to talk to and makes me feel at ease. Especially as I have felt very upset at having to put my dad in a care home, after looking after him myself for many
years.

Excellent, warm, well-furnished. Excellent food and friendly staff. No complaints at all. I was previously in hospital for a whole year. I had a brain injury, a broken back and neck, fractured skull. I've no complaints at all.

Over the (almost) three years I have visited two sisters on mostly two visits weekly. I have witnessed kindness plus good care towards the residents of Kingsmead Care Home over this period from staff employed there.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.525)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.525) out of 10 for Kingsmead Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.625 for Kingsmead Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (70 Excellents x 5) + (29 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 104 Ratings = 4.625

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Kingsmead Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Some may want a quiet atmosphere and some may miss the noise of a busy house. I enjoy learning what it is that each person will enjoy and try my best to make that happen.
