Seahorses Care Home, in Chiseldon, Wiltshire, offers a homely environment in which elderly people with dementia can feel live in a tranquil and welcoming home.

There is a Wellbeing Team rather than a care team, their focus being on the residents wellbeing not just their immediate care needs. Care is delivered using an holistic approach ensuring that dignity is at the heart of all they do. The Wellbeing Team use the word help, rather than assist. Words like refused or challenging behaviour are not used, instead they say that they didn't want to or they are upset or angry. This ensures that this is how people would want their loved ones to be treated and they think that their residents deserve nothing less. This is sometimes called "The Mum Test", if it was your mum what would you want for them. This Mum Test is the overarching ethos that guides the team to deliver truly person-centred care.

Family and friends of the residents are welcomed and involved in care planning ensuring that they truly understand the person as an individual.

My great friend has been in Seahorses for over a year now. She has truly blossomed - she is very happy and contented. The staff and management are excellent - very caring. The food and general care are of a very high standard. There is a lovely, homely atmosphere, and I would recommend the home/nursing
care to anyone. A very special place indeed.

Whatever time of day I visit my father I'm always given a pleasant welcome and offered a much needed cup of tea. All staff are friendly and willing to talk to you.
They all seem to enjoy their job and nothing is too much trouble.
I can't fault the level of care my father receives. I think I made a
good choice in picking this home.

Having researched nearly every care home in the area, the rationale behind our choice of Seahorses Care Home was as follows. It was conveniently located with beautiful views. The room we chose was particularly pleasant. The property, in general, was homely and didn't have the corporate feel of some
of the larger national care home groups we visited. It is a standalone business with a sole proprietor and we feel it is always preferable to deal with the owner of the business directly, which we were able to do. Indeed it was the owner who visited and did the initial assessment in person. We were impressed with him, his attitude, ethos and personality. Talking with the staff at our initial viewing some of them had been there 20 plus years. They were obviously happy in their work. Whilst we sometimes felt that at times they were short-staffed we could never fault the standard of personal care they provided to my mother, which was everything we could have wished for. Sadly it was a brief residence but with the benefit of hindsight, we remain happy that we made the best possible choice in using Seahorses Care Home.

From our first visit to view Seahorses, we knew it would be ideal for my aunt and were delighted that there was a vacancy.
The staff and management are all wonderfully caring, helpful and professional.
You are always greeted with a smile and made to feel very welcome whenever you visit (there is an
open door policy).
My aunt is always clean, well dressed and very content.
As a family, we can finally relax knowing she is receiving excellent full-time care in a caring and happy environment.

The staff and management at Seahorses Care Home are excellent with the care of my Dad who can be very difficult and aggressive to look after. They treat him with care and dignity at all times, even difficult ones. Not only do they care for Dad, they are a great support to me and my family.

My wife has been a resident in Seahorses Care Home for the last 5 and a half years. For the last 12 months, she has been entirely bed-ridden and the care that she has been given for all this time has been truly fantastic.

I visited her this morning and they informed me that she is now suffering from

a chest infection and that in their opinion, she is now nearing the end of her life. Her doctor will be visiting this afternoon.

We continue to be extremely impressed by Seahorses and the level of care provided, often in very difficult circumstances due to the nature of the illness. There is a very good level of personal attention given. The care is very genuine and heartfelt. Food and drink are great with a good supply and when
required help is able to be given to eat. We are always made to feel very welcome whenever we visit, which is very often.

The family of our mum have been pleased with the level of care given. They provide a high level of care (personal) Happy, friendly and make everyone welcome, in sometimes difficult situations. The food is very good and we would recommend this home to everyone. In the 2 1/2 years, mum has been there
it's lovely to have continuity of the same staff working there.

I really like the way that the home has kept the same staff throughout the time my friend has been there and I have got to know all of them really well. There is no unpleasant smell at all in the house and my friend is always bathed with her hair washed ready to go out to lunch with us. The food is
really good and I would recommend this home to everyone.

I was very concerned about my sister going into a home. Her dementia had been managed in a council independent living with some care and the staff were good. Once she started wandering though it became a real problem and meant that she could no longer live where she was. This made me very apprehensive
about a move. I have to say though that my sister, who I was concerned would be unhappy, has within a month settled very well. It really is a home from home. I queried the lateness of her breakfast on the second visit to find that she gets up when she is ready (no rushing to deal with clients) and the same with bedtime. I ring regularly but she does not necessarily want to talk to me as there is something going on. I am finally beginning to relax that my sister is happily being looked after well and I can relax .
Mental health took me to 2 different homes - I chose this one and am glad I did. I can relax a bit now knowing she is well looked after.

My mother has been at Seahorses Care Home for a year now and from day one she has been very settled there, enjoying the food and company of staff and other residents. The atmosphere is relaxed and happy and we have always been made to feel welcome to visit at any time. We are always kept informed
of her care as the progression of her dementia has reduced her physical and mental ability. As anyone who has had to make the huge decision to place their loved one in a care home knows, it is a worrying time particularly when you have to make the decision for them due to the nature of dementia, but we have no regrets in choosing Seahorses for mum.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.679)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.679) out of 10 for Seahorses Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.779 for Seahorses Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (85 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 104 Ratings = 4.779

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Seahorses Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 20 registered maximum number of service users is 4, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
