Briarlea is an award-winning, family-run residential home. Catering to a maximum of 28 individuals, Briarlea specialises in the finest, person-centred care on a small scale. The home boasts 4 sitting rooms, a beautiful garden-patio, as well as a range of ensuite bedrooms to suit every budget. Briarlea seeks to emulate the same cosy environment that residents have enjoyed in their own homes; with rich, traditional interiors and plenty of comfy furnishings. All meals are cooked fresh, with an emphasis on local, seasonal ingredients.

The home also benefits from scenic surrounds, with residents enjoying 4 acres of scenic garden - including Briarlea’s private plum orchard. For nature lovers, Briarlea’s rooms command sweeping vistas over the surrounding countryside, which is often coupled with sightings of deer and other local wildlife. Meanwhile, a bus drop outside the home helps residents make the 1-mile journey into Evesham town centre when they desire. Bubbly, longstanding staff hail from the surrounding villages and run various initiatives to ensure residents stay connected to their local clubs, shops, and communities.

The home’s motto is ‘life is for living’ and high staff ratios ensure Briarlea hosts a lively social scene. There are plenty of activities for residents to enjoy, making Briarlea a wonderful place to grow old - although never old at heart!

I visited my mother at her care home on Thursday 16th July 2020 for the first time since 3rd March 2020 due to Covid-19 epidemic. She is 93 and after my father died 18 months ago she just wants to be with him. She wasn't very happy about having to see me outside and she only managed to stay for 15 minutes
she wanted to go back in!

Reply from Mark Widdows, Director at Briarlea Care Home

Thank you for your review. We know these are exceptional times and social distancing is keeping families apart when they want to be together, but it is only through working together and following what can be unpleasant procedures, that we can all stay safe... At the time of writing, Briarlea has remained Covid free throughout the pandemic and we have not lost any residents though the virus. Our focus has always remained the safety of those in our care and I hope that can be understood, while we steer our way through these difficult times. Kind regards, Mark, Owner.

My mum is always treated with dignity, compassion and, above all, cheerfulness. The Briarlea staff make her laugh by jollying her along even when she is having a difficult day. Their care is outstanding, the home is always bright, fresh and welcoming, and the manager has done a superb job in preparing
and maintaining a covid-19 free home despite the enormously challenging situation. Full credit must go to the manager and her staff for keeping our relatives safe and happy whilst under considerable strain from the ongoing pandemic.

My Mum has been resident since the Autumn of 2019. I have nothing but the highest praise for all of the management, carers and staff at Briarlea.
Their professionalism, care, compassion shown towards my mother, communication to us as a family and the ability to create a safe environment for my mum,
having had to give up their own home, is heartwarming.
The reassurance given when needed to my mum enables us as a family the highest confidence that her care needs, safety and day to day living are completely taken care of.
Briarlea is clean, tidy and the rooms are spacious. The activities offered are brilliant and I have witnessed my mum taking part in the activities that as a family, we would never dream of her being involved in. This again is down to how kind, encouraging and reassuring the carers are.
I would not hesitate to recommend Briarlea as a care option for anyone considering this for themselves or their family.
Thank you Briarlea for making my mum smile again!

My mother has been a resident since April this year and after a tentative settling-in period, she has now settled in beautifully and has many friends here now. She feels at ease here because she knows if she is in trouble, then help is at hand 24-hours. She enjoys the events -especially the singers.
She enjoys the meals. The carers are absolutely wonderful with her and the other residents and nothing is too much trouble, even though they are always busy. They are kind, caring and have a great sense of humour, which my mother appreciates. Her room and en-suite are gorgeous and she totally loves it.

I began volunteering at Briarlea Care Home in January 2019, I attend the care home once a week to spend time with the residents. I felt very welcomed by both staff and residents when I first arrived at Briarlea and the quality of care for the residents is brilliant. All the carers work tirelessly to
make the residents lives better and easier. The residents are all very kind to me and are so lovely. Briarlea is a great place to volunteer!

Though we no longer live locally now, we do try and visit our relative as often as possible. When we arrive, a cheery member of staff always greets us with a smile. There is quite often a lovely smell of home-cooked food (depending whatever time we visit). The furnishings are superb, like a hotel. Lovely,
light airy colours, cheery silk flower arrangement in each window/table. Nice treats for residents each week (film night) impressive raffle prizes. A most pleasant, friendly atmosphere.

In the short time mum has been here, everyone has been very accommodating. Giving us any necessary help we and mum have needed.
Mum was very anxious when she arrived in October 2018 and she has been helped and encouraged by everyone to join in.

I have been living at the home for almost 5 years and am very happy with all the care and support I receive from the staff here, they are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The food is very good, there are occasions when I don't like the food choices but I am able to speak to the staff and
the cook and they help me to pick something else. I enjoy the activity programme and get involved with everything available if I can, especially enjoy the singers. I recently fulfilled my wish of going to a falconry display with 2 of the staff from the home, they even took me for afternoon tea whilst we were there. I recently had to go out to appointments for my eyes and the staff have taken me and supported me to ensure I can attend my appointments. I have many friends that I have made here and enjoy spending time with them.

Mum has been resident here for almost a year. She has settled in very well and enjoys the company of the residents and staff. She has gained a little weight and looks better in herself than she has for a long time. The staff are very kind and helpful.

I have been treated by all members of staff in a personal way with compassion and understanding. It is my opinion that all the residents are treated in this manner. All members of staff from the manager down to the youngest and most junior assistants are well trained and give their best attention to
the residents.

I have no complaints regarding Briarlea, although mums room could do with a lick of paint. The manager and staff are excellent, the food is very good and the home itself is extremely comfortable and very clean.

Reply from Mark Widdows, Director at Briarlea Care Home

Hi Lynn, Thanks for the review and you only have to mention to Jo about a refresh of the paint and we will be pleased to accommodate, not everyone wants the upheaval of repainting and we leave it to residents to tells us, kind regards, Mark.

Current Review Score: 9.8 (9.817)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.8 (9.817) out of 10 for Briarlea Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.917 for Briarlea Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (99 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 108 Ratings = 4.917

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Briarlea Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Joanne

Joanne

Job Title: Care Home Manager

Joanne, or Jo for short, has been at Briarlea since 2003. In fact, Jo was the first person that Briarlea’s owners Mark & Sally employed when they first took over the business. Back then, Jo was employed as a carer & cleaner but growing with experience – becoming a valuable member of the care team, before branching out into management, firstly as care co-ordinator, the deputy manager and now care home manager.

As you might expect over her many years at Briarlea, Jo knows all our residents and the home inside out. She’s Briarlea’s biggest cheerleader – and has a real drive to make each one of the care team (herself included) the most knowledgeable, skilled carers they can be. As Briarlea’s residents deserve the best!

Lisa

Lisa M

Job Title: Carer

Lisa is Briarlea’s longest serving member of staff joining the team from leaving school – she’s been caring for residents since 1992! Over those years, we’ve all become familiar with the bright, cheery energy she brings to work each day. She’s has a wonderful, tranquil effect on the home. Lisa’s Mum, Val (now retired) also used to work at Briarlea. Lisa undertook a hairdressing course and is fully qualified, so on a Wednesday, Lisa and Val pop-in to do hair for any of our residents. But you have to book up fast - their perms are very popular.

Lisa

Lisa B

Job Title: Chef

Lisa B has been a much-loved member of Briarlea since 2018. She is one of our in-house chefs and makes all our resident's favourite meals, including home-made Shepherd’s Pie, Fish & Chips and wonderful Roasts. But it’s in the dessert department where Lisa truly comes into her own. She’s known for her birthday cakes. As whenever it’s a resident’s birthday, Lisa will treat them to a home-made cake topped with whatever ingredients they desire, recently requested were – chocolate Aero, plus Jelly Babies – you name it, she’ll make it! This cake tradition brings all of Briarlea together. For every individual who calls Briarlea home, Lisa makes sure they feel special on their big day.

Rob

Rob

Job Title: Handyman

Rob is our handyman here at Briarlea. Whenever our residents need a lightbulb changed, a wardrobe fixed or if we’re simply sprucing up the home – we call straight for Rob. He’s our in-house superman. He’s also got a wicked sense of humour. So when he’s not up a ladder, you’ll probably find him larking about with residents. Rob is married to Jo and as husband and wife, they make a winning duo at Briarlea. It all lends to the homely, family-vibe we like to cultivate.
