My mum went here for 2 weeks respite. I would definitely let her go again! She's been in other homes for respite which I wasn't impressed with. But would definitely recommend The Poplars. The staff were lovely and friendly.

Mum moved into The Poplars two months ago. She has settled in very well. All the staff are great and the atmosphere of the home is always happy and pleasant. The Poplars seem very clean and well-run. I feel very fortunate that my mother can spend her last few years in such a lovely environment.

My Gran was a resident until recently at The Poplars Care Home. The care and love she received was second to none.
All of the staff give the residents their time and it has the feel of a large family residence with lots of love and laughter. Members of staff were always on hand to have a chat (and
to share a laugh) which Gran loved.
A few days before my Gran passed away, there was quite heavy snowfall. My Gran mentioned she wanted to go sledging. One of her carers sat in the window with her watching the snow... It fills my heart to know that these things were going on in her last days.
I particularly liked that there would be regular updates posted on the Facebook page so I could see what she was up to on days I couldn't visit.

Thank you so much for your wonderful review! We are so grateful to hear that the love and care we have for our residents is felt by their families as much as the residents themselves, we see family members as part of our extended family also. We pride ourselves in providing a homely and family feel to our home as well as providing care we would wish one of our own relatives to receive.

Mum became a resident of The Poplars in the summer of 2022. She settled really well, the staff have been really good and caring. Mum always comments on how good the food is. She has a lovely room with good views. The family have been happy with communication and would certainly recommend the home. There
appear to have been more activities for residents in the last few months, which is a real bonus.

Reply from Lisa Cunningham, Director of Care at The Poplars

Thank you for your comments, Carol, they are much appreciated, we are glad your mum is happy here and that you are both happy with the care given. There are definitely more activities happening as we now have two dedicated activities coordinators to solely focus on this area.

Very happy with the majority of experiences my mother and I receive. I would like to be aware of what training the staff who care for my mother have and how soon they receive it after starting work with the residents. I am happy with most of the communications I receive. Occasionally, the line can be
persistently busy and I have no second official link I can communicate any emergencies on.

Reply from Lisa Cunningham, Director of Care at The Poplars

Thank you for your review. We take all feedback seriously good or bad and have an open door policy should residents or their families have any questions surrounding staff or the home. I will contact you to discuss staff training and the recruitment process in general to answer any questions you have.

My father entered the care home during the COVID19 lockdown which was a difficult experience. The home made the process as easy as it could have been under the circumstances which we are grateful for. Overall we are very happy with the care my father is receiving.

My Mum, who has Alzheimer's, has been in the care home for just over four years now. Over this period of time, her Alzheimer's has gradually got worse. I cannot fault the care and help that she gets from all the staff at the care home. They make sure that she maintains her dignity and although her condition
is gradually worsening, they still help her to feel part of the 'family' and make sure that she joins in with the different activities that they do. Obviously, it has been very difficult over the last 12 months, but the home has put regulations in place so that we can still visit her in a safe environment. She herself has told me that she is looked after very well and that she is happy living there. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Poplars care home to anyone.

It has been so wonderful during this difficult time of the lockdown that the staff have facilitated social distanced visits (weekly) either outside or appropriate measures put in place to be able to sit in the corridor area. Caring staff who have continued to look after our loved ones over the last
few months.

I am very pleased with the home. When my brother was going into the home I was a little worried. But the care and the kindness shown to him has been excellent. As regards to the food, it cannot be faulted. My brother does not join in many activities but has access to books which he reads all the time.
I would recommend The Poplars to anyone.

I find everyone, from the management, carers, kitchen staff, and maintenance staff very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. My father has become more active having the help of the carers, which he didn't have at home. He looks so well.

My mum has Alzheimer's and limited mobility and has been at the home for 9 months. The management staff have been extremely helpful and understanding regarding her care needs and wellbeing. I have witnessed the staff being friendly and caring towards all their residents. My mum presents as relaxed,
comfortable and well cared for. During the pandemic, the management have reacted professionally, ensuring the safety of staff and residents is paramount and keeping family informed of the measures.

Well-run; clean; caring staff and management. I feel relieved that Mum is being cared for at The Poplars. Big weight off my mind. I am encouraged by the high standards.
The overall feeling is it's one big happy family, some difficult residents but the quality of staff keeps the overall situation, atmosphere
and everyday life to a high standard.

My dad has been at The Poplars now for 8 months. My other family members and I are very pleased with the home. I have visited many times and feel the carers, management and all who work there are excellent. They are friendly to visitors and I can see genuinely in their hearts they care for the residents.
I have met the owners who are lovely, they talk to the residents and know them all by name! My mum (Dad's wife) feels happy that her loving husband is being looked after so well.

I am very happy with the care from all of the staff. The cleanliness is very good and all the rooms I have seen are all very nicely furnished. The dining room is always clean and tidy and hoovered after lunch. The staff answer any questions I have about my mum and her care. There are pleasant gardens
the residents can sit in, in the good warm weather.

When my parents went to live at The Poplars, my mother found the transition difficult, but she was treated with unfailing patience and kindness. After her death last year, my father was given every support in coping with her loss. He has vascular dementia and is deaf, but he has been happy at The Poplars
because the staff are generally kind, caring and thoughtful. If dad has been unwell, he has had swift medical help and any problems regarding his care have been swiftly dealt with. My family are kept informed of any difficulties that need attention. The standard of hygiene is very good and the excellent food provides variety and choice. During the present coronavirus outbreak, we cannot praise highly enough the efforts staff have made to keep our loved ones safe. They have organised socially distanced visits and online chats with family. They have continued to provide activities to keep spirits up and put photos of residents on their Facebook page for families who cannot visit.

Current Review Score: 8.8 (8.791)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.8 (8.791) out of 10 for The Poplars is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.533 for The Poplars is calculated as follows: ( (38 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 60 Ratings = 4.533

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.258 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Poplars is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 33 registered maximum number of service users is 6.6. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.6 = 0.758

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
