My mum has been a resident since June 2023, she is well cared for. She had a fall a couple of weeks ago, she fell out of bed and injured her leg. Staff cared for her until an ambulance arrived. In hospital, they discovered she had pneumonia. She was discharged back to the home the same day under the
frailty virtual ward with oxygen being made available at the home. The staff cared for her well under difficult circumstances.

The carers are always friendly and look after the residents well. It is very clean and the cleaners are around a lot to keep it that way. I feel I can speak to staff freely about things and they sort things out straight away. It's a pity they haven't more funding to do more activities in the afternoon
which the residents would enjoy.

My mother seems perfectly at ease with the staff if they should visit her during my weekly visits. She informs me that her meals are very nice. As I only visit for less than one hour per week I am basing my review and answers based on this alone.

The building although clean is in a dreadful state of repair. It is clear there has been no investment in the property for a long time. The staff are excellent but obviously not appreciated by the company they work for.

The area where my mother lives is gloomy and scruffy and poorly maintained.

The administration leaves much to be desired when I'm asked to provide either cash or cheque for expenses.

Reply from Sharon Flood, Regional Operations Manager at Long Meadow

Thank you for your feedback, I am sorry you feel staff are not appreciated but they really are. We are carrying out a maintenance plan for the home.

I had an appointment to visit my mother today. All the staff I met were very helpful and wore obviously very affectionate towards Mum. Mum has advanced dementia (Alzhiemers) and therefore needs a lot of assistance since she can no longer walk unaided. I am very happy with the excellent care she received
today and the excellent level of cleanliness that I saw in the home.

My wife and I cannot speak highly enough regarding the staff and management of Long Meadow. They cared so much for my mother-in-law in the last few weeks of her life when we moved her to Matlock to be near us. The home is run professionally and balances that with an open and caring manner. My mother-in-law
had a large room which was well appointed and we are sure she would have been happy here long term. The current manager is worthy of particular note. She was extraordinarily helpful and kind during our first few days after first contact right up to the most difficult of days very recently. She is a real credit to the organisation. We were always made a coffee when we arrived by staff attending the hot drinks and the food was excellent, tasting properly homemade and lovely. We can recommend Long Meadow without hesitation. They really looked after a loved member of our family and we will always be grateful to the whole staff.

The staff are wonderful (what few there are). Sometimes only two on to deal with the patients. They work very hard but if there was an accident they might not be around at the time as they could be busy.
No stimulation for the patients. All they do is sleep or walk around. They don't get taken out
to see something different. Things go missing, even if they have names on everything.
I am self-funding and find it a lot of money when some people get help. I feel more could be done for the patients.
But more staff is required.

I am sorry to hear that you feel you have had this experience with us at Longmeadow. As families, residents and staff are aware I have an open-door policy here at Longmeadow and am always available to talk to everyone who accesses the service. I would like to invite you to a review meeting with myself at a time to suit you, to discuss any issues that you may have at the moment so that we may have a chance to put things right and improve the service that you feel we provide to you and your husband. As a residential home we have a capacity of 41 service users and in terms of staffing we are staffed between 6 to 7 members of care staff during the daytime and 4 to 5 members of staff during the night, dependant on individual dependency needs which is regularly reviewed each month or if needs change before this time. Please continue to attend the residents and relatives meetings which we hold bi-monthly. I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Mum had several weeks respite care at Long Meadow pending a care package at home. She settled in well and always spoke highly of the staff. Her room was bright with lovely views and had everything she needed. She had choices of lounges to sit in depending on if she wanted company or quiet time and made
very good friends with one particular resident. The dining room is large and welcoming and Mum often had a late breakfast as she doesn't like to get up too early. There are visits from a hairdresser and chiropodist which Mum took advantage of. We always felt that Mum was safe and that the staff cared about her. The only issue we had was sometimes it took a while to be let in or out but we fully understand that the safety of the residents is paramount.

Mum and dad have just spent 5 weeks of respite at Long Meadow. The room was lovely, spacious and clean with views out on the duck pond and Peak rail line, with steam trains passing by.
The manager and her staff are lovely and can't do enough for the residents and family.
The meals are excellent and
the home provides entertainment, hairdresser, chiropodist and optician which we took advantage of.
Thank you for looking after mum and dad!

The policy of the home is not to force our mother to do anything against her wishes. This includes bathing, sitting at a table to eat, to see a podiatrist, her feet are in terrible condition giving her great pain.
Her clothes, all taped frequently, go missing. The laundry department is very disorganised.
She
is incontinent and needs a constant supply of clean underwear.
Sometimes she wears none!
Whilst the staff are very kind but understaffed. She needs more supervision and assistance. Often she will go to bed fully dressed but wet! She can be a difficult woman and hard to deal with. Surely that is what a dementia home specialises in. The residents need more stimulation, more than a television blaring out.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.669)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.669) out of 10 for Long Meadow is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.337 for Long Meadow is calculated as follows: ( (38 Excellents x 5) + (36 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 83 Ratings = 4.337

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.332 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Long Meadow is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 41 registered maximum number of service users is 8.2. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.2 = 0.732

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
