The year mum spent in Langdale was the most upsetting time of our lives. I acknowledge it was a difficult time for all due to covid, however, I feel the management at Langdale condescending, argumentative and totally unable to relate to what we were going through at the time.
Mums mental and physical
health deteriorated rapidly during her time here, improving only when the family was allowed in to assist with feeding at mealtimes.
Mum, despite having advanced frontal lobe dementia, was also constantly being left alone in her room despite no covid being in the home.
In Feb 2021 after a Dols report agreed with the family the home served notice, obviously not willing to follow the recommendations and instead, trying to blame the family.
Mum has now been in her new nursing home for a couple of months and the difference is remarkable. She has put all weight she lost in Langdale back on (around two stone).
Her mental health has also improved and she is no longer screaming out constantly in distress.

Reply from Gary Fuller, Clinical Manager at Langdale Lodge Care Home

Management had to make special requests to our professional partners in order to ensure that Mum was placed with us as you had made it very clear that Lodge was the only home for you. Lodge kept COVID19 away and we kept your mum safe. We installed wi-fi in all the resident's rooms, provided Ipads for virtual visits and allocated extra time for activities. You chose not to use these services yet threatened management because we were following government advice. We tried to support you and your family during the numerous one to one meetings we had with yourself and your sister. One meeting was your sister requesting the home manager not to serve notice after you had threatened him again. If the home was as bad as you are voicing now we sit in wonder as to why you didn’t move mum to another provider sooner. It was our belief that we had to make the decision for you to seek alternative accommodation for your mum as we could no longer meet your ever-growing list of needs and demands.

Mum has dementia and has been resident in Langdale Lodge for 16 months. We are so pleased that we chose Langdale. Mum has thrived, put weight on and is happy and content. The staff are like one big happy family and the residents are loved and well cared for. There is always something going on, the staff
always go the extra mile and nothing is too much trouble. Mum loves to watch the birds in the aviary and the rabbit in the garden. Although we were not able to visit for a while we were kept informed and photographs of Mum were often sent to us. We really appreciate all the hard-working, lovely staff and the management of this superlative facility.

Reply from Elena Martin, Operating Manager at Langdale Lodge Care Home

We are so pleased that you chose the Langdale family. Your mum certainly brightens the day and brings love and laughter to all our service users and staff.
Langdale Lodge specialises in dementia care, delivered by highly skilled and experienced staff who share a strong passion for delivering individualised care that values and respects the uniqueness of each person. Our activities coordinators understand how important it is to provide a high level of activities and stimulation for our much-loved service users. The birds in the garden are a popular attraction, but the star of the show is ‘Berty’ the pet-bunny.

After checking out multiple nursing homes we were so pleased to find Langdale Lodge we were shown around and we just loved the feel of the place straight away.
Mum is so happy although she has missed us so much with the lockdown.
The staff have been amazing with her she loves to chat and dance and
painting is also a favourite the entertainment staff are so kind and keep me up to speed on how she’s doing sending me happy pictures on occasion to my phone.
Thank you for all the kindness and care you have shown my mum and me.

Reply from Elena Martin, Operations Director at Langdale Lodge Care Home

We are so grateful for your feedback regarding the care that your mother receives at Langdale Lodge.
Being a care provider with a strong ethos on family values, we are so happy to welcome your mum and yourself into our family. Langdale Lodge is often referred to as a ‘home-from-home’ by residents and their loved ones.
Hopefully, now the government has allowed visits again, you will be able to see Mum, face to face, on a more regular basis.
Thank you for being part of our journey and we hope to continue to provide the best possible care for your mum.

We would not recommend this care home to anyone suffering from any form of advanced dementia.
Our relative's best interests, we feel, were not taken into consideration. We found the homes attitude to our concerns unprofessional and condescending.

Reply from Elena Martin, Operating Manager at Langdale Lodge Care Home

We are saddened that your experience at Langdale Lodge was not a positive one. Unfortunately, due to the COVID pandemic, the health and social care sector has to follow the strict government rules of shielding and social distancing, in order to protect the vulnerable members of our society. We understand that not being able to see your relative closely caused a great deal of upset and frustration and we are deeply sorry for this. We hope that the new placement that you have chosen will meet your family expectations.
Langdale Lodge ethos of care was always family orientated. We strive to deliver the best possible care for our service users and their loved ones, working closely with the local Mental Health Team who will recommend us as a Dementia specialised care provider.

When I was asked to find a care home for my husband, I checked CQC and decided Langdale looked best for us. I was proved right when my husband was accepted. The loving care given to him could not be faulted, and all the staff spoke highly of him. His family were given every support through a difficult
time, and I would recommend the care home to anyone.

My husband's end of life care at Langdale Lodge was wonderful. All the staff were kind and respectful to him at all times. They also cared for us as a very traumatic time. Nothing was too much trouble day or night. I will be forever grateful to everyone who works there for helping us at that distressing
time. Thank you.

Mum has now lived at Langdale Lodge for just over a year. Her complex needs are well understood there and she receives care and support of high quality, such that her difficulties do not overwhelm her. The staff here are very aware of how to best assist mum, she is well looked after and valued by staff.

My mother spent the last 8 weeks of her life here. The care and support we were given was outstanding. Mum was treated with care, love and dignity in an environment that was clean and safe.

My husband has only recently moved to Langdale Lodge Care Home. Having looked at 6 other homes Langdale Lodge was our first choice.
The staff are so caring and always welcoming with a smile. Their patience and caring has to be seen to be believed.

The residents of Langdale Lodge are warm, well fed, happy and well cared for. Perhaps there could be a little more entertainment but then I don't know how far the budget has to stretch, to provide these extra luxuries. The staff work extremely hard and have heaps of patience. They are very caring.

Mum's been in Langdale Lodge Care Home since September 2017 and she seems very settled and is well thought of by the staff. She enjoys her meals and eats very well and has put weight on. We are very satisfied with her care.

My husband has just come to live here. The staff have been so welcoming and kind to me and my husband. I have been able to dress his room as I wish and encouraged to bring the things he holds dear. He has excellent care and the staff are continually interacting with the resident's and keep me up to
date with his progress and his day. I am very happy and relieved he is with staff who care.

Our mum entered the home in September 2018 after declining whilst living at her family home. A month on and she has picked up and is able to hold conversations. This change is down to the care home staff and managers. This work is greatly appreciated.

Dad was in Langdale lodge just over 3 weeks for respite while facilities in his house were being improved. Really impressed with the home, especially the staff. Very caring, thoughtful and approachable. Dad doesn't like change and can be quite difficult but he settled quickly and was content.

Staff very friendly, courteous and caring. Always welcome you and offer a cup of tea. Food is good and well served and presented. End of life care was great and lots of support provided for the family. Rooms ensuite, but a little on small side. Garden needs more regular care.

The overall running of the home is very good but as in most homes, when the residents needs become urgent/high priority there is not enough staff to cover 1:1/2. The home has a pleasant atmosphere as the staff are always cheerful and the residents enjoy activities such as sing-a-longs, pamper days and
occasional trips out.
Very refreshing to have music playing more often than a TV, that no one wants to watch or even understand the current news. Overall very satisfied with the care for my mum.

Our experience so far has been very positive. The initial assessment at the home was handled very kindly, trying to accomodate in every way. When we brought my mother into the home the welcome was lovely, every member of staff was extremely helpful and caring. We were able to bring various things to
make the bedroom feel like home. A special chair was allocated for use in the sitting room. Coffee/teas are offered to family on arrival for visiting. Made to feel welcome at any time and it's no trouble to phone if concerned at any time. Food good. Very reassuring at a very distressing time.

Me and my husband have visited my great grandma who resides at Langdale Lodge since September last year, on 17th of March 2018. This was the first time visiting her as we live abroad. From the moment we stepped in we have been greeted by a very polite and smiley lady who after asked us to sign in invited
us in the lounge. We were delighted to see her looking so much better than since last time we've seen her, her hair was done and she had a healthy skin colour. It was dinner time and the place smelled of lovely home cooked food. Even if the staff were rushing around serving and helping people eating, all seemed to be organised and I particularly liked the camaraderie between the workers there. We were offered a drink and also enjoyed a small glass of Guinness as St Patrick's Day was celebrated that day. By looking at my great grandmother enjoying her food whilst chatting with another resident I felt like she truly enjoys it there. We have congratulated the staff for their work on our way out.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.639)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.639) out of 10 for Langdale Lodge Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.839 for Langdale Lodge Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (78 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 93 Ratings = 4.839

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Langdale Lodge Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
