Smalley Hall Residential Home has grounds with lovely views. Residents can make good use of the pretty courtyard garden in the summer months. The trees and planting in the garden encourages wildlife and birds to visit. This garden is used for summer fetes and BBQs with family and friends. In fact the summer fayre is usually a massive hit, drawing in local residents to enjoy the day.

With only 27 residents when full you can be sure that the attention to detail at Smalley Hall is second to none. Well trained staff feel more like family as they are such a close knit team. The lovely manager even brings her dog Monty to work every day to keep everyone entertained.

There are lots of things to keep you busy at Smalley, from arts and crafts, quizzes and games, to trips out and live entertainment. Cooking club is a favourite amongst the residents where snacks are made by residents and family recipes are shared with the cooks so everyone can try them!

Also with regular visits to the onsite hairdressing salon you will be looking your best, and with regular visits from a chiropodist, dentist, physiotherapist and GP when required, you can feel very well looked after indeed.

My dad was taken into the home on the 24th of June and settled in well, unfortunately fell, but the staff were fantastic with him. He was in hospital for a few days but returned to the home and is getting used to his new life with the help of the caring staff.

The carers were very friendly and helpful. The sitting areas were very comfortable. The banging doors were hard to get used to as they were so loud. The food was very good.

Mum was made very welcome and seemed settled whilst with you, which was a great relief. I was contacted once re a medical query, which was a good thing. I was concerned whether Mum would cope with the heavy fire doors but noticed when I picked her up she had it 'sorted'. The food must be good for Mum
to give it a great review - she's very fussy!

Staff turnover high - more staff required to enable them to spend time with residents and encourage them to join in activities. Mum hasn't seen an external outside activity since March 2023 - Chatsworth. Hopefully dead plants in pots in garden will be replaced this spring/summer - activity for residents?

Reply from Phoebe Booth, Media and Community Relations Manager at Smalley Hall Residential Home

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We want to reassure you that there has never been a time when we have operated with inadequate staffing levels.

We regularly organize trips for the residents at all of our homes, and participation is always optional. If you have any specific preferences or suggestions for future outings, please don't hesitate to share them with us!

The new planters are ready and waiting assistance from both residents and staff once the weather becomes more favourable for outdoor activities. Additionally, many of the plants in our garden will not bloom until the spring or summer months. Thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention.

Smalley Hall has provided exemplary care for my aunt. The staff are unfailingly helpful and understanding. I fear the issues that might arise from pressures on staffing and from replacing key staff. The Hall is brilliant because of its staff and their strong empathy for residents.

My mother has been a resident at Smalley Hall for four years. She is deaf and has vascular dementia...97 years of age. She is very well looked after and treated with respect. I cannot praise the management and staff enough. If I have any questions or queries, they are answered with respect. If there
are any concerns about my mum, they contact me and put me in the picture. A big thank you to all the team at Smalley Hall.

My mum has been a resident at Smalley Hall for almost a year, and she has received exceptional care. Excellent staff, very caring and responsive to her needs. There is a daily activities programme which is fantastic and has helped to keep Mum alert and interested. Homecooked food and a sense of a caring
'family ' atmosphere only add to the wonderful care and attention to detail at Smalley. First-class home. Many thanks for all your care and enthusiasm through these difficult times.

My mother spent the last three months of her life in Smalley Hall. Because of COVID restrictions, I was only able to keep in touch by phone, and they were always happy to speak with me and bring Mum to the phone. A few days before she passed away, I was able to visit her, and I was so impressed by the
cleanliness of the home and the kindness of the staff.

Whenever I had contact with my mum, she always talked to me about how safe and happy she is at Smalley Hall. My mum laughs and tells me about all the things taking place each day that make her smile. For the rest of the family, we can all carry on with our lives, knowing that our mum is happy, safe

Current Review Score: 9.3 (9.323)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.3 (9.323) out of 10 for Smalley Hall Residential Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.523 for Smalley Hall Residential Home is calculated as follows: ( (68 Excellents x 5) + (30 Goods x 4) + (7 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.523

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Smalley Hall Residential Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 26 registered maximum number of service users is 5.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
