My family member has been in this care home recently and we found the staff to be very pleasant and great with the residents, the home is very warm and welcoming with lovely well-kept gardens around the home, the food is cooked fresh also. The new manager is great and is making great improvements since
his arrival as manager, the only thing I would say is that the building needs a lot of work to make it modern looking and attractive.

Thank you for your review. I will pass on your kind words to the staff. If there is anything we can do for your family member in the future, please do not hesitate to get in contact. Kind regards.

I have never written a review before but I am a person who believes in credit where it is due. I am really impressed and happy with the changes that have happened recently at this home. The new manager is a lovely gentleman and has really made a lot of positive changes in just the short time he has
been here. I have always found the carers to be very caring and I love that there is home-cooked food and not microwave meals (which my friends have found with their parents' care homes). The building looks a little tired from the outside but please don't judge it by this. The manager and his team have created a real homely feel and genuinely care for the residents. My mum is always happy and has built some positive relationships with both other residents and the staff. The home since the manager has arrived just has a much more positive and welcome feel and I thought it only fair to write a review. The current team and their hard work.

On every visit, I had to clean excrement from my mother's nails, hair or blankets and give her some well-needed fluids. Her initial room was damp and my family, and friends had to beg to get her a dry room. Even when I was visiting, she was forgotten at meal times. The choice "to eat what they provided
or don't", my brother and I had to beg for soup. The personal alarm was "accidentally" (according to staff) unconnected on most visits. I was reassured it was pulled out by accident, but how was it turned off without being reset by a member of staff? My mother often said that the staff did not like her using her assistance bell and would take it off her. The home was understaffed. Care workers were unsupported and inadequately trained by the management team. I was not surprised to hear that the so-called manager put the phone down on my mother's friend when she attempted to raise some concerns. I myself was often misinformed, misled and lied to. The home is not fit for purpose. Not recommended.

Where do I start? Not all but some extremely unprofessional staff. Building inside shabby, damp, narrow spaces not fit for moving /handling.
No fresh water every day and had to wait an hour to get some. The room is damp, not enough pillows. The food is terrible. Some of the staff were abrupt and one
needed attendance to their own personal hygiene. Threats of the bell to be taken away. The resident was not kept clean or cared for in my opinion. Always short-staffed. Avoid at all costs.

Reply from S. Kuppusamy, Director at The Beeches Care Home

The issues raised are not facts but fabrication. CQC has inspected the home and has found the Home to be above average. The Home has achieved 3 good and 2 requires improvement. We have been dealing with moving and handling for years with no issues. These issues have been raised by a friend who visited the resident about 5 times. If she was seriously concerned why haven't these concerns been brought to the attention of the manager at the time of her visits?. How many times has she eaten the food as we have no record of providing her any food. The water is changed at midnight every day and refilled when needed throughout the day. The Home is adequately staffed and CQC is very happy with our staffing level. Re the condition of the building being damp etc, this is an aspect we will accept if she can provide us with her qualification as a building surveyor. We feel due to other ongoing issues with this resident that this review bears no substance to the care we provide.

Upon my first visit to this home I was met with a warm smile although my first impression of the building was not great due to there being a builders skip outside the front door containing soiled mattresses and rubbish. I was taken through to a very cold corridor and past a couple of sitting areas into
another cold corridor. An extremely ill-fitting bedroom and fire door and there was my dear friend huddled underneath a very grotty looking blanket wearing someone else’s old clothes. The room was very shabby and had several damp patches on the wall. The wooden floor was dirty and extremely untidy with several large boxes of catheter equipment, a very unattractive and uncomfortable chair, a hoist and generally a mess. In one corner was a commode chair with no lid on and next to that a waste paper bin which was overflowing with rubbish. My friend was in a bed on a thread-bare sheet, lumpy cushion, no pillows and cold! Need I say any more? Totally inadequate, the worst!

Reply from Melanie Sampson, Manager at The Beeches Care Home

Thank you for taking the time to leave review. I would like to clarify a few points you have raised -
1. The skip was outside the front of the building as there is no other suitable area, the contents of the skip and their condition is exactly why they were being disposed of.
2. The person in question was not wearing somebody else's clothing.
3. The damp patches on the wall had appeared over the weekend -you visited on a Monday- after we had suffered severe storms and torrential rains across the country. Your friend was in the process of being moved to a different room due to the storm damage.
4. Your friend had requested the heating to be turned down in the room.

From the moment we arrived with Dad, The Beeches had a lovely atmosphere and felt homely. The staff are all very caring and nothing is too much trouble and they really go above and beyond what you would expect. We were really apprehensive about Dad having to go into full-time care but we feel so lucky
that he got a place at The Beeches. Special shout out to all the carers for looking after Dad so well and keeping us informed.

My dad, who is suffering from Alzheimer’s, has been happily living at The Beeches Care Home for nearly a year now after a fall. The care he receives is second to none and I am kept well informed of any health problems. I pop in at all times of day and any day of the week and the staff are always attentive
and very caring.
His bedroom has been decorated and is always immaculately clean. The house maintenance team are great.

Staff are friendly and pleasant but a little casual and lacking in professionalism. Written and verbal communications are quite basic and don't fill you with confidence. The overall building is impressive from the outside but is tired and needs extensive renovation. They keep records of daily duties
in relation to your relative's care. Where this falls down is a lack of chain of command for timely action if concerns are logged and someone needs medical intervention. Lessons need to be learned when dealing with the more vulnerable and unwell residents to not just record information and observations but to have a process on when to act on them. My Mum seemed to enjoy her time here but then she was a lady who didn't like to complain or have attention given to her personal matters which may ultimately have led to her untimely death in their care.

Dad relies on carers for personal care and to aid mobility. He has just spent a week in respite care, a previous longer stay was fine and made us feel confident that he would settle again. This time he was there for 8 days and was only washed in his room. He was not showered once and was very embarrassed
about his odour. He came home with a particularly sore area around his groin due to a lack of care. Some personal items were removed from his room and replaced with cheaper alternatives. One day he missed breakfast completely, the staff were late getting him up and there was a meeting in the dining room. Dad was left in the lounge without food or drink until one staff member got him a drink. No food until lunch.
When we visited, he had been waiting to be taken to the toilet, he had already had to phone Mum to phone the office to get their attention. Some staff members are very friendly and inclusive, however, as my dad is completely dependent, he will not be staying there again.

My father can be difficult to deal with. He didn't want to go into a care home to start with, but he has settled in very well. He likes all the staff, his room, the food. I feel happy that he is being well looked after.

The lady this review relates to has spent 8-10 weeks in hospital between January to June 2020 however we have been impressed by the high level of care she has received through quite difficult medical problems/issues and can't fault the caring nature of the staff. The manager at The Beeches is very efficient
and has been very helpful throughout the time spent in the home.

The manager and staff are approachable and committed to what they do. Whenever I visit or phone I am always met with a friendly, welcoming voice and/or face. I have no doubt that my dad is looked after and cared for well. They know when it is appropriate to seek any assistance from the healthcare professional.
Do not be put off by the lack of luxuriousness of the house. It is the care and support my father receives that matters. Having his own keyworker allocated to him also makes a difference.

Friendly staff over the years my mother has been in the home, always welcoming when visiting. She is looked after well and has settled in over the years. Work has been done throughout the past four to six months for improvement of inside decor and garden area. Overall I'm happy with the service provided.

Mother has been in The Beeches three years. There have been several changes in staff in that time. I feel when I visit her there often seems to be a shortage of staff on duty. However, they are always pleasant. Overall the experience isn't too bad. I wish they would contact me for medical issues or
incidents involving Mother.

Current Review Score: 7.4 (7.422)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 7.4 (7.422) out of 10 for The Beeches Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.1 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.138 for The Beeches Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (35 Excellents x 5) + (7 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (31 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 80 Ratings = 3.138

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.284 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Beeches Care Home is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 22 registered maximum number of service users is 4.4. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 4.4 = 0.909

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
