  • The Poplars, Market Rasen
The Poplars offers compassionate, individualised residential and dementia care. Located close to the centre of the small, vibrant market town of Market Rasen in Lincolnshire, the home’s new, specialist dementia 11 bedroom household, with additional living, dining and communal areas, opened in April 2017.

The residents' well-being and comfort is the prime focus. This means that responding to their individual needs is top priority, so the home is very proud to have received an 'outstanding' rating in this category in the recent CQC (Care Quality Commission) inspection (November 2016).

My father has been at The Poplars for 6 months. Staff have looked after him very well, his needs are all met. Management have been very supportive and communication is very good. We are very happy with our father's choice of care home.

I was shown around The Poplars and had a chance to see the whole of the impressive building. The resident's rooms give privacy yet at the same time they are part of the 'family' of The Poplars.
This part of the family feeling was throughout the building, where the atmosphere is supportive, caring and
reassuring to both resident and visitor alike.
I turned a corner and found a 'cameo of care', reflective of this atmosphere. A resident had mispaid her spectacles and one of the staff had found them. She had a hand on the resident's arm, was talking to her reassuringly, describing where she had found them in a gentle, closely personal way. It was a delight to see. It is this 'cameo of care' which reassures me that my sister's needs will be fully met in an excellent way.
She will be able to decline with dignity as she ebbs away.
And me? I am so very pleased that The Poplars welcomed her as a resident.

The care and service provided by The Poplars is excellent. The staff are caring and nice at all times. Of all the care homes I have visited, this is the best. Should I have to go into one, the Poplars would be my choice.

The Poplars is well run with good access at all times, the staff looking after the residents are fantastic, especially in the Willows. All the staff are caring and got the "extra mile" in their care and support of the residents. It is, without a doubt, the strongest asset within The Poplars. Access
to management can sometimes be difficult and the garden areas of the home could be better maintained.

My mother recently spent a week on respite within the Poplars and the treatment she received was fabulous. It was certainly like being amongst family with care and attention being shown to her throughout the duration of her stay. I would definitely recommend this care home and also intend to utilise
the services again in the future.

My husband was very unhappy with the mattress on the bed and the nearest toilet to use during night time was out of action which caused him some distress.

The Poplars is an excellent care home with professional, caring and respectful staff. Residents are welcomed into their new home and helped to settle in and feel comfortable really quickly.
Everyone is invited to join in and participate in the daily activities at The Poplars and friends and family
members are made to feel welcome at any time.
I would happily recommend The Poplars as a great choice for respite or longer-term care.
Truly a person-centred approach to care.

I have just returned from celebrating my mothers 99th birthday at The Poplars. The staff had decorated her room and brought flowers. Mum was very relaxed and enjoying her day. Four of the family joined her for lunch, set in a decorated private area. There are balloons, wine and a delicious lunch, followed
by 99 Ice cream cones all around. There is always a really calm and caring atmosphere ay The Poplars. The staff are kind and very aware of each resident's needs. It's a happy home for its residents.

At very short notice my mum needed respite care. As she had been to The Poplars before and because of the care she had previously received the Poplars was her immediate choice. The staff at The Poplars are amazing. They genuinely care for the residents. I had no worries about mum being at The Poplars
as I knew she would be in very safe hands. I will be forever grateful for everything they have done for mum once more. The care received has allowed her to return home once more, where she belongs and wants to be. Thank you!

The care I received during my week's stay was nothing short of outstanding. Everyone even down to the handyman was friendly and welcoming. The care staff are genuine and made me feel very welcome, safe and nothing was too much trouble. They tended to my every need and helped back on my feet following
a fall.
Myself and my husband who was visiting on one particular afternoon enjoyed some entertainment organised by the activities lady. My husband commented that you would need to go far to match the afternoon as it was superb. Staff members got up and danced and the singer was brilliant.
I have never had to go into respite before but I know if I had to again then it would be The Poplars I would choose. I couldn't thank them enough. Hats off to all at The Poplars, they are truly amazing. THANK YOU.

I had my sister in this home for 7 years, having brought her down from Scotland until she passed away. The staff looked after her with dignity all the time.
I feel the home needs a gardener to finish the place off and parking more for visitors and staff. It's kept tidy and smart, I know there is building
that's been going on but it will be a lot smarter a year ago, we know the place but strangers don't.

Reply from Maxine Kennedy, Home Manager at The Poplars

Thank you for taking the time to submit a review. I am happy to advise that as part of our planned maintenance programme we are currently working on a proposed plan to increase the car parking from 15-27 spaces. The plan also includes for bark mulch and low-level planting to improve the appearance and tidiness our grounds.

My mum has lived at The Poplars for nearly a year. She is very well looked after in terms of her own cleanliness/hygiene, her rooms cleanliness, the quality of the food served and the staff who care for her.
The Poplars is very well managed and the carers are always polite, respectful and well turned
out. The provision of entertainment, hairdresser, chiropodist district nurse and trips out is excellent. All of the staff including the caretaker, laundry/housekeeping and catering are excellent.

My mother recently moved into the new wing at the home. My wife and I were impressed with the care taken to ascertain her needs and requirements. All the staff seem very friendly and supportive.
The quality and facilities in the new wing are excellent.
So we consider my mum is in a very safe and secure
place, which is meeting her needs.

I have been impressed by the friendliness of every one of the staff, and by their professionalism. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The Home Manager in particular has been extremely helpful whenever I have had a query or a question. I have not been around at mealtimes or when they are carrying
out personal care for my dad so cannot comment. However, from what I have witnessed, for example when I asked if someone could bathe dad's eyes, this was done promptly.
During my career in health care I visited many care homes. In my opinion the overall standard of care, professionalism and friendliness of The Poplars puts it up there with the best.

My mum received outstanding care in what sadly provided to be the last month of her life. At The Poplars, she was treated as a person, not a case and everything was done to meet her wishes and ensure her comfort.
The manager showed great empathy both with mum and with my sister/me as next of kin, even
visiting us in hospital.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.619)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.619) out of 10 for The Poplars is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.837 for The Poplars is calculated as follows: ( (87 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 104 Ratings = 4.837

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.782 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Poplars is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 51 registered maximum number of service users is 10.2. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.2 = 0.882

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
