Richmond Villages Northampton is an award-winning retirement village situated in Grange Park in Northampton, less than five minutes from the M1 motorway and less than an hour from both London and Birmingham.

At the heart of the retirement village is the care home which provides first-class nursing, dementia, respite and convalescent care in 30 en-suite bedrooms.

The retirement village features excellent on-site facilities that include a coffee shop, restaurant, a number of elegant sitting rooms, hair salon, beauty treatment room, library, free Wi-Fi, an activities and craft studio, plus award-winning landscaped gardens and a sensory garden.

All rooms are decorated by a team of specialist interior designers and feature electric profiling beds, a range of furniture, TV, telephone, en-suite shower room and Wi-Fi access.

The village is run by a village manager and a dedicated team of employees who are trained to deliver only the best possible care to the village residents.

Unlike traditional care homes, Richmond Villages Northampton uses its carers and nurses solely for the purpose of caring and supporting its residents whilst fully trained hospitality and housekeeping staff look after meal preparation and cleaning.

To further enhance the well-being and enjoyment of residents, the village also has a dedicated activities team. The team provides a daily activities program that includes day trips where transport is provided by Richmond Villages Northampton's own fleet of vehicles and dedicated drivers.

This is an extremely well-run organisation. Of special importance to me is the staff who are without exception, lovely, happy and caring. Head of domiciliary care is a real asset to the village and goes out of her way to help. Food is very good as is the entertainment. Having seen other homes this is
streets ahead. Not only do I feel my mum who has Alzheimer's is safe, well-fed and looked after but she is involved in activities in array I would never have imagined. This is down to the amazing team here, I would thoroughly recommend it to others.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review Richmond. We are delighted that your Mother is happy and receiving excellent standards of care and support. I will pass your kind comments on to all staff.

Carers come to our flat every morning to help my husband shower and dress. This works very well. Carers also come each evening to set up his peg food overnight, this does not work so well as a trained carer is not always available. This means that I have to take over at short notice.
A carer is on
duty overnight but often it seems to be an agency worker, who is unfamiliar with the residents problems and sometimes speaks very poor English. This is most unsatisfactory.

Reply from Sharon Carlisle, Domiciliary Manager at Richmond Villages Northampton

Thank you for your feedback. All staff have received Peg Feed training by the District Nurse. The main agency member of staff that attends on occasion has worked at Richmond for two years and competencies have been completed.

I have lived here for just over a year as an independent person. I came because I wanted to be somewhere that had a lovely and caring community with a good variety of activities. The gardens are well set out and maintained - a good mixture of flowers and plants and a joy to walk in. People are friendly,
good provision of meeting places. Good provision of transport for shopping and medical appointments etc.

This is a first class (5 star) home for the elderly or disabled. One can choose assisted living or independent living living depending on one's financial and physical/mental circumstances. The suites (apartments) are one or two bed-roomed with a lounge, kitchen and bath/shower room. There are two floors
(ground, first and second). Several public rooms (lounges, games, coffee, library, hair dressing salon, reception, therapy and as very spacious restaurant.) One floor is reserved for patients in need of care. The extensive grounds are superbly tended and used for many events.

Further to our previous review of 9th July 2016 it is only fair to advise that the issue raised regarding the outside decoration of our apartment has been addressed and the front door repainted and adding to the generally excellent standard of maintenance within our village.
The other issue raised
was the unfortunate state of the adjoining butterfly garden. This too is being addressed and is in the process of being 'beautified'. Thanks to all concerned.
Other than that Richmond Northampton fully lives up to it's deserved reputation of being a caring, friendly and active Retirement Village.

After my second marriage to my husband in 2001, he began (after about 7 years) to develop signs of dementia. In 2010 I found it difficult to do all the caring that was needed. My son, who lives locally, found this very nice care home in Northampton which really did seem like "home".
My husband died
about 2 years ago, and of course I am still here in my very nice flat and am very well looked after. Fortunately (though just 90) I do not yet need any medical care, but have made many good friends here and am very happy.

The staff who provide our care in the home are clearly carefully selected and familiarise themselves with the job and their clients, by shadowing an experienced colleague. They maintain high competence, and that's important in providing this service, they quickly establish a friendly, open and often
genuinely affectionate relationship with the family. This familiarity, warmth and chat are vital. Lapses from this high standard are very rare, almost exclusively involving temporary staff. If I have a concern it is the risk and I can appreciate the difficulties of shortfalls in permanent staff numbers. The right line between maintaining a lean organisation and losing experienced staff, with an unwelcome loss of continuity for the client is difficult but vital.
The wider facilities also provide a path to meeting future needs.
The approachability and responsiveness of the head of care is much appreciated.
'Rooms' and 'food and drink' not applicable in our case.

We are really pleased that our parents are resident at Richmond Northampton. The care that is shown towards them is of a very high standard and staff appear to be genuinely interested in their residents.

On the rare occasions when things do not go well, this is rectified quickly and without a fuss.

A real strength is clearly the staff but the efforts made to enable residents to participate in social activities is worth noting.

Our parents have really benefited from being at Richmond and now enjoy a much higher quality of life than they've enjoyed for many years.

My only experience is Independent Living At Richmond. I am happy here because it offers security, companionship and activities relevant to my age. I am able to eat in the restaurant when I feel like it and can use the laundry service and housekeeping when required. The gardens are beautiful, and the
apartments are airy and modern. Day trips and weekly visits to supermarkets assist those who can no longer drive. In addition we have an intercom to enable us to keep in touch with other residents and all staff. This is very important particularly to people living alone. Knowing there is a back up service when required, be it a medical condition or a breakdown in household appliances etc. is very reassuring. Quality of life is vastly improved living at Richmond, compared to just managing in a large house, being lonely and unable to keep up the standards we were accustomed to, when we were younger and active. This often results in depression and accidents in the home with no support.

The care at Richmond can only be described as outstanding. The flatlet he has in the main building has been made to look like his old flat in Surrey and he has fantastic support from the Domiciliary Care team. He loves the place and particularly likes his three meals a day in the excellently staffed
and delightful restaurant. He thinks it is like being on a cruise.

The home is well managed, the staff are polite, respectful and friendly and know all the residents well. The buildings are clean, tidy and smell beautiful. The receptionists are efficient and helpful to residents and visitors alike as are the maintenance staff and the gardening team.

Dad really enjoys the regularly organised programme of entertainment and social interaction.

Our family is delighted with Richmond Northampton and we are sure that there will be a queue to register us as the next generation at Richmond when or if the time comes. Great value for money and a wonderful solution to our problems with Dad.

Had a very restful and peaceful holiday. Thought the apartment was very comfortable but would have preferred a disabled toilet as when you are in a wheelchair it is very difficult to use a normal toilet. The gardens where kept very nice with plenty of seating. I thought the food in the restaurant
was varied. Plenty of things to do if you want to, if you want to join in.

Mum has settled well. The staff are very helpful & patient & kind both to her & myself!
Mum enjoys the excellent choice of food provided.
Mum has dementia, so it is a little difficult to rate the activities as she can't remember if she has been to them.
I understand that recently the dom care staff
have made extra efforts to take Mum to events as Mum does get a little bored, again this is mainly due to her condition & no longer being able to read or concentrate on things; however staff often tell me that she enjoyed a certain event.
Mum has a lovely downstairs apartment with a west facing bay window, she loves to sit in this on sunny afternoons & look at the garden.

Reply from Matthew Evans, Village Manager at Richmond Villages Northampton

Thank you so much for your kind feedback. We're very pleased to hear that Mum has settled in so well. You may be aware that we have an Admiral Nurse (they specialise in people living with dementia) that visits our village twice every month. If you'd like to meet with her, please let us know and we can put you in touch.

My parents are both approaching 90 years of age and suffer from severe mobility difficulties. When it became clear they could no longer remain in their own home and required some kind of assisted living, I visited most,if not all, of the appropriate care homes in the local area, and,in my opinion, none
were better than Richmond Northampton. From the first moment, we received nothing but helpful, considerate service and, whilst my parents found it difficult at first to make the adjustment, it is plain to see that they are content, well looked after and receiving the services they currently need. Whilst cost is always an issue, to find a home where both of them can be together in the same rooms is very difficult,so we feel the move has been well worth while. The relationship we have with the staff and management is excellent and I always find that any problems are resolved in an efficient and friendly way.

As a friend of someone who lives in Richmond, I must say I am very impressed. The staff are always very helpful and can't do enough for you even as a visitor. The food is always outstanding. I have been to the restaurant a few times to eat. There is so much for the residents to do if they want. I am
really pleased to how my friend had settled in and she herself is really pleased. Just walking in and around the grounds and meeting people with their genuine smile on their faces says it all for me. Everyone is relaxed and is home to them. I am just happy that my friend has found a lovely place to live and knowing that she will have the great care if she needs it. I really enjoyed the east meets West night and the do they had for the Queens 90th party. It just proves that nothing is a problem for Richmond and make memories for all family, friends and residents.

My father became a resident in the care home after 4 happy years in the assisted living unit. He became increasingly unwell and following a stay in hospital he needed more care than could be given to him in the assisted living unit. The staff in the care home treated him with respect and dignity. In
common with the staff of the assisted living unit they had endless patience and compassion and he seemed to relax and thrive under their care. Food was provided to suit his needs, it was plentiful and of good quality. He was encouraged to eat and drink frequently, treated as an individual and provided with soft foods as he had increasing difficulty swallowing. When it became evident that his condition was terminal the nursing staff did everything that they could to support us, his family as well as him, making his last days as comfortable as they possibly could. The surroundings at Richmond Care Home, as in the rest of the village, are very comfortable, clean and relaxed.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.735)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.735) out of 10 for Richmond Villages Northampton is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.935 for Richmond Villages Northampton is calculated as follows: ( (87 Excellents x 5) + (6 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 93 Ratings = 4.935

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Richmond Villages Northampton is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
