Barnby Court Care Home is an award winning family-run care home who genuinely care. The dedicated and long-serving team of friendly carers are tirelessly committed to the wellbeing and happiness of residents' lives. Barnby Court is a small home with a big heart.

Ashall Care believes that people should be encouraged and helped to continue the life they have always lived. Maintaining an individuals right to choose is the foundation of their wellbeing and promotes happiness and contentment throughout the home, not only for residents but for the families and staff too. From here, the team can do wonderful things to enrich the lives of everyone who lives here.

Barnby Court has 23 bedrooms, all of which have a sink within; they are individually and tastefully decorated. Externally there is a beautiful enclosed garden with seating. An active lifestyle is encouraged and a varied activities programme tailored to individual interests is offered.

The home is located centrally within Barnby Moor. There are good road connections an the home is easily accessible from the A638 and A1. It is approximately 3 miles north of Retford.

Barnby Court has a 'Good' CQC rating (December 2020) and is a band 4 Nottinghamshire County Council Quality Rating and has a top band 5 Food Hygiene rating (March 2023).

The staff do more than they should do, they really look after my Mum and the love and care they show is lovely. They couldn't be more caring and loving towards my Mum. They are a credit.

Barnby Court has offered a safe and secure environment with attentive and caring staff to my Grandma for the last year. The care home has a stable daily schedule which has helped my Grandma improve since she arrived. The food has improved recently and the care home is always clean.
The facilities could
be improved by sorting the boiler out so the radiators can be turned off if it is warm outside.
Overall, Barnby Court is the best care home in the Retford area.

Thank you for your kind comments in relation to the staff and the home overall. The comfort, welfare, and wellbeing of all our residents, visitors and staff is paramount to us at Barnby Court. I am pleased to inform you that contractors have been on site and repaired two of the main radiators in the front lounge, which has had an immediate impact on the sitting room, making it more comfortable. Another contractor arrived on site last week and has looked at fitting thermostatic controls on some radiators. Once the work is fully completed it will enable individual radiators to be turned up and down to make more a comfortable temperature according to the resident’s wishes.

My mum has been a resident in Barnby Court for just over 2 years now. And she seems very happy there. In the times that I visit, staff seem to be very conscientious in their work and the residents look to be happy in the environment.

Worse thing we ever did, putting mum in this home, we believe mum was most definitely shortchanged, she was in there 3 years, it was in mums interest not to move her, because she had made friends and thought she was being looked after very well, but in reality it was the dementia talking, we wanted
mum to be looked after with compassion and dignity neither in our opinion was forthcoming, we can’t describe how we feel we’ve let mum down, but she is at peace now, avoid at all costs

Thank you for raising your concerns on carehomes.co.uk as we appreciate any feedback so we can continually improve our care to Residents, but firstly we wish to offer our condolences to you on the loss of your mother. This has been investigated and it was concluded that as your mother’s care needs changed from residential to requiring nursing care. Unfortunately, Barnby Court does not provide nursing care, so it was deemed to be in your mother’s best interest to move her to a nursing care home. This was a medical decision so that her needs could be met appropriately and safely, which you were kept informed about by the home. Once again I am sorry for the distress this has caused you but this was not a decision made by the home but the palliative care team in your mother’s best interest. If you would like to discuss your concerns further in a meeting, please contact us by telephone on 01325 351100 for a convenient time to be organised.

The staff are always welcoming and helpful. The place is clean and well staffed. My friend has been here 18 months now and has improved greatly since living here. She was previously at home with daily carers and her overall health is much better now. All due to regular meals and good care!

My Nan came in for respite care in September. Even form the initial phone call I was made to feel at ease and felt that I could approach all members of staff. They were genuinely caring and supportive with all of her needs and she settled in quickly. I would have no hesitation in recommending Barnby
Court and feel happy in the knowledge that my Nan return in the future for respite care.

This was only my second visit to the home since my mum went in, I don't live in Nottinghamshire so I don't have much experience of this home. I think the staff are brilliant and they all seemed to get on well with mum. I personally don't have anything bad to say about the place but my experience is
limited to the answer to "activities" below as I haven't seen any. Mum now seems to have settled there so as long as she's happy I'm happy.

As a family, we cannot fault Barnby Court at all. It's clean, the staff are pleasant and very helpful. The residents all seem very happy and that's the main thing. The management go out of their way to help too and that is great.
Mother-in-law is happy and in a safe environment so that makes us happy.

Very friendly staff from first telephone conversation and visit. Mother in law has settled in well and feels safe. I like the fact there is a hairdresser and beauty. Mother in law is happy with the food.

Mags has gained many years’ experience in providing care and support to older people, to enrich their lives.


She is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards of care and quality of life for Residents.


Mag aims to provide the kindest care for each and every Resident. She extends this caring approach to her colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to Residents in a way that they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


She also works hard to arrange events and activities with nearby schools and clubs and is always keen to include the local community in life at Barnby Court.
