Barnby Court Care Home is an award winning family-run care home who genuinely care. The dedicated and long-serving team of friendly carers are tirelessly committed to the wellbeing and happiness of residents' lives. Barnby Court is a small home with a big heart.

Ashall Care believes that people should be encouraged and helped to continue the life they have always lived. Maintaining an individuals right to choose is the foundation of their wellbeing and promotes happiness and contentment throughout the home, not only for residents but for the families and staff too. From here, the team can do wonderful things to enrich the lives of everyone who lives here.

Barnby Court has 23 bedrooms, all of which have a sink within; they are individually and tastefully decorated. Externally there is a beautiful enclosed garden with seating. An active lifestyle is encouraged and a varied activities programme tailored to individual interests is offered.

The home is located centrally within Barnby Moor. There are good road connections an the home is easily accessible from the A638 and A1. It is approximately 3 miles north of Retford.

Barnby Court has a 'Good' CQC rating (December 2020) and is a band 4 Nottinghamshire County Council Quality Rating and has a top band 5 Food Hygiene rating (March 2023).

The staff at Barnby Court Care Home are excellent, always friendly and willing to answer any questions. I also find them empathetic towards clients and family. Since Mum became worse in her condition, the staff have shown great care for her, providing special equipment for her.

My mum was placed here as an emergency respite by social services. The care home is in need of updating and decorating and the carpets need replacing. The staff are friendly and do their best but they seem to be short staffed for the amount of residents. All the bathrooms need updating. The food served
looks good, all home made even though mums seemed a little cold. The two conservatories have a pleasant outlook onto the garden but unfortunately don't seem to be used much. Mum sleeps most of the time so it is difficult to get a clear picture of the care she receives but on every visit she has been clean and comfortable.

You have highlighted concerns about the standard of décor at the home.In the summer of 2015, we announced a major new investment programme, with a further £100 million investment which will enable us to complete refurbishments right across all homes. Many of the changes being made have been decided by Residents themselves, and the first phase of this upgrade programme is currently underway at 50 homes, before expanding to all homes over the coming months. We are in the process of decorating Residents bedrooms and there are plans to refresh the home.
With reference to your concerns about staffing levels at the home. Please be assured all of our homes meet or exceed the staffing guidelines that are set by our regulators. We are committed to providing Residents with the high quality, kind care they deserve, and therefore tailor our staffing levels to ensure we can meet everyone’s individual needs.
All of our Residents are encouraged to use all areas of the home and are assisted to where they would like to spend their day.
We will work with the chefs at the home and monitor the food that is being served. Making sure Residents have a choice of their favourite foods is really important to us. We record individual preferences to make sure our fresh food menus are created around what they want most. We are delighted to welcome families and loved-ones to share in mealtimes, and the Sunday roast is a special time at many of our homes.

A very pleasant and friendly atmosphere, the staff are very helpful and seem to genuinely care for the residents. My friend who is a resident, says the food is very good and there is always a good choice available. The only negative aspect is the car park, it's very small and soon gets full up. But
this doesn't affect the residents only their visitors.

I find the staff at Barnby Court very helpful and accommodating, nothing is too much trouble for them and if I ever end up in a care home it would be Barnby Court I can't praise it high enough.

On visiting my mum since she's been a resident in the above home, I've observed certain things such as: When asked about mum e.g medication, Dr visits or mums request to see dentist etc etc, I'm met with the same reply which is "I'll check, I wasn't in yesterday" or "I'm not sure I'll find out" although
these issues have been addressed with the manager and hoping for a mutual result as I know it is difficult with the carer to resident ratio.

HC-One aims to deliver the kindest possible care to all Residents, and we know how important it is to provide continuity of care with friendly and familiar staff members to support each Resident.
However, it may be that we are waiting for the GP to get back to us, or waiting for a GP visit or some medication to arrive that the care staff may not be aware of. To avoid any wrong or incomplete information being given to the family it is important that the senior on shift has the discussion.
The Home Manager operates an open door policy and is always happy to discuss any concerns about Residents care needs.

Barnby Court has a cosy, non institutional and homely atmosphere. The residents have complex and very different needs which the staff manage very well. Without exception they are calm, caring, patient firm but fair, very professional. Also they are compassionate and human. I have seen a lots of hugs.
I particularly like that there are 4 different areas, the residents do not all sit in a circle, not watching the television. I would like to see more organised activities. It may be that these take place when I'm not visiting. I realise that many would not engage (mum) but feel that the opportunity should exist.

Thank you for your comments, at HC-One we value and act on all feedback. Since our new activities lady started at the beginning of the year we have had lots more going on, arts and crafts, The Church and some outings. Motivation and encouragement plus lots more Tai Chi and lots of rummage boxes. We have had activities around Easter Bonnets, Mothers Day and Valentine days, we also provide Doll Therapy. We have on-going monthly meetings and monthly planners scheduled.

When I first came here I was worried but then I woke up and realised how comfortable I am here. I'm happy I really am. When my husband passed away I had to take care of myself but I'm very comfortable here. I made mistakes at home. It's beautiful I don't have to do all the washing. At first I wondered
what I was doing here. I honestly think it is a lovely place to live in.

The staff are friendly, helpful and very reassuring with their range of knowledge and insight on family, friends and health conditions. The facilities in my opinion could be a little more up to date such as pressure plate flooring which I have seen in another home. This tracks residents movement. Overall
I enjoy the pleasant welcome and leave knowing that my mum is in safe hands.

I have noted your suggestion on pressure plate flooring, Barnby Court is not a purpose built care home and such flooring would be conducive. Staff monitor resident’s welfare and movement over a 24 hour period. We promote a sense of wellbeing by encouraging residents to move around the building freely, promoting choice as to where they sit and where they have their meals.

Barnby Court has been very good to my mother-in-law, with good carers. Although I think with the monthly money certain improvements could have been done around the home. On the money side, since my mother-in-law has started at the home there has been 3 price increases with the last one being a significant
increase of circa 20%, which I'm not sure the increase in care/facilities has matched the increase.

My mother has been a resident in Barnby since 13th January 2016, so far I have been very happy with the care provided for my mother. The staff have been very thoughtful and attentive. My mother is struggling to settle and I know she is not the easiest of patients to look after.

Barnby Moor is a great home for mum, she feels, safe, secure and well supported. The are also very welcoming and lovely towards my mums family. They cater for mums food needs brilliantly. All the staff are lovely, mum thinks a lot of them. Obviously mum has her carers who mean a lot to her and she has
become attached. I must say we thought the last increase in her fee's were a big jump. I would expect to see that difference in the home.

My wife was taken into the home at a very difficult time but the home carers were very understanding and helped a lot. The home is clean, tidy and well run, the carers know where everyone is all the time. She eats all her food and causes no trouble I would not hesitate to recommend the home to anyone.

Mags has gained many years’ experience in providing care and support to older people, to enrich their lives.


She is a knowledgeable and dedicated leader who is passionate about delivering the highest standards of care and quality of life for Residents.


Mag aims to provide the kindest care for each and every Resident. She extends this caring approach to her colleagues and works closely with them to deliver care and support to Residents in a way that they gain the most benefit, in a warm and welcoming home.


She also works hard to arrange events and activities with nearby schools and clubs and is always keen to include the local community in life at Barnby Court.
