Mum called in distress on a January Monday and asked what a care home could offer her. We researched homes and shortlisted two very different options. I told Mum and she chose Westdale, it sounded like her own home, comfortable, home cooked food, lovely garden and places to sit in the sun. She moved
in on the Friday for respite until she decided further. The home proved everything she expected, wanted and so much more. The rooms always comfortable and very clean, the food not too fancy, varied and freshly prepared, the garden and community rooms perfect and the daily activities have something for everyone. The staff are all brilliant, patient, friendly, encouraging, challenging to the right degree and, so, so caring, not just for Mum but for us as well. Mum's distress quickly evaporated, Westdale helped her to make huge progress physically and mentally to the point where she felt capable of returning home, but with the sure knowledge that Westdale is a safe and comfortable safety net.

Very caring, lovely environment. Good value for money. Run on Quaker principles. Stable staff team. A small enterprise so feels people-friendly. The manager is approachable and responsive. Very happy with the level of service provided. I always recommend it to friends. My friend has lived here for three
years. LGBTQ+ friendly.

My mother has been at Westdale for just over a year. Our visit to her today reminded me - of what I've come to take for granted - that Westdale is quite an extraordinary place. For a start, it simply doesn't feel like a 'care home'. With only 16 residents in a big spacious old house, it feels more like
a 'real home' than any care home I've ever encountered - everyone treated as total individuals, everyone able to have as much independence as they're up for, and such a good vibe, a real community among the residents. Just today my husband and I have sat in the conservatory drinking tea with my mum and 8 or 9 other residents, all sitting round together. So many characters there! We listened, and we laughed and heard people's stories. Quieter folk like my mum get drawn in simply by being there.

I've wondered what the secret is! I think it's the staff. They show such kindness, sensitivity and good humour. Many have been there for decades. I feel extremely grateful to them.

My mother has been a resident at Westdale Care Home since May 2022. She is delighted that a place was available for her and so is the whole family. We are hugely appreciative of the care received from the staff. They are dedicated, respectful and kind but also apply wonderful touches of humour.
The
building is very pleasant and well kept, with easy access to communal areas. The garden is a joy, again with easy access and many different seating areas.
The charges are very reasonable. Thank you to all at Westdale.

I started as a volunteer at Westdale Care Home in November 2020 while my mother was still a resident there (having spent two extremely happy years in the Westdale flats followed by another two even happier ones in Westdale itself).
During that time I came to know the staff and the residents extremely
well and it seemed a natural progression to continue volunteering after Mum died in January 2021.
I started by running a general knowledge quiz, which gradually developed into a weekly event - with a hardcore of almost half the residents attending. It has grown to become a melting pot of memories, topical discussion, ideas to be fed back to management and a general putting of the world to rights! We see each other as a group of very entertaining, firm friends and I know that we all look forward to our Monday afternoons.
I also help with the running of the regular tuck shop at Westdale, which has become a legend in itself - and another valuable interaction for the residents.

Westdale owns and manages the retirement flats adjacent, one of which my mother lives in. The care home manager has helped my mum out on many previous occasions that have been appreciated by my wider family. One notable and prominent occasion was during May 2022 when the kitchen and bathroom of my mother's
flat was fully renovated. He ensured that Westdale provided a warm, clean bedroom for almost two weeks during the periods when her flat could not be habitable including providing her with meals and a safe environment for her to stay in. I know for sure all the Westdale staff went to great lengths to make my mother incredibly welcome and looked after for that duration, and for that, myself and my family were eternally grateful. From the evidence I have witnessed myself, Westdale provides a first-class environment for its elderly residents, and my hope is that given my mother is now 92, she may have the opportunity to herself move in as a resident in the near future.

Reply from Stuart Best, Director at Westdale Care Home

You are very welcome!
As we are a not-for-profit service with charitable status it is really a pleasure to ensure we can maintain the properties to the high standards and offer the extra when needed. The tenants in the flats will this year be invited to the main home for meals and activities and I believe your mother is holding an informative talk as one of the activities for the residents and I am told these are really interesting.
Glad we can help and thanks for the feedback.
Stu

When she first came to Westdale more than a year ago, my godmother felt she had joined one big happy family and she still feels this way. Nothing is too much trouble for the amazing and immensely caring staff and volunteers. There are activities on offer each day and trips out in the local area in the
minibus. This is a truly caring home in a beautiful old but adapted building with a gorgeous well looked after garden. Westdale offers exceptional care for a very reasonable cost. My godmother feels very lucky to live here.

Thank you for your kind words, a family feel service is one of the things we really hope to have so that is great to hear and we are very lucky to have your Godmother here, she is such a lovely person and a pleasure to have.

Westdale is a compassionate environment for frail elderly residents.
It offers tremendous consistency of care with remarkably long-serving, patient staff who are dedicated to providing residents with all aspects of their care needs. Staff show courtesy, kindness and good humour in the varied situations
they encounter. They deliver effective, professional care, also ensuring the atmosphere remains homely, built on good and lasting relationships and avoids feeling like an institution. It combines sufficient opportunities to socialise with respect for personal privacy. It provides good, comforting and not unnecessarily sophisticated food. Its residents enjoy an atmosphere as close to life in a private setting as possible, whilst providing the care and support they need. The home's open-door policy allows maximum visiting opportunities for family and friends and also provides residents with a variety of opportunities to continue to engage with the wider world.

That is really great feedback, thank you. We are very lucky to have staff that genuinely care, have passion for the job and maintain high standards in this increasingly challenging sector of care. The solid Quaker foundation and the committee are very proud of the staff and I must say work hard to look after the team which helps keep the best people. We like the idea of 'home from home' so sounds like we're on the right track.
Thank you.

Westdale is a very well-run home that offers very high-quality services to the residents it serves. All staff are helpful, friendly and professional. They prove themselves to be highly dedicated to the welfare of the residents and exhibit unfailing patience, kindness and skill. In my experience, the
quality of the care offered by all staff has never been less than outstanding.
Residents are shown high levels of respect and are treated with dignity by everyone employed at the home. The food offered by the home is of good quality and residents report it is always tasty and appetising.
A good range of activities are offered catering for a range of interests. The visits from a local nursery, trips out, weekly quizzes and the poetry sessions are particularly appreciated.
Managers are approachable and listen to the residents carefully. They respond to both residents' and relatives' views in a thoughtful and professional manner.
In my view, the home represents outstanding value for money.

Thank you so much for your views, we strive for outstanding so means a great deal to see we're on track. Residents and families 'lived experience' is so important to really understand if we are doing things right so this is very much appreciated.

In all honesty... it is the best home we've seen/been to... in its cleanliness, quality of care and attention, and general running of the home are impeccable. I cannot fault it. Big thank you for all of the above; it gives us 'younger folk' hope for the future.

Reply from Stuart Best, Director at Westdale Care Home

We were lucky enough to have our mother in Westdale during the first lockdown. Westdale certainly is a unique home offering residents independence and respect whilst providing the care the user requests and where applicable needs. As a family we cannot thank the kind, caring, vivacious staff at Westdale
for the kindness and tenderness shown to our mother as her health deteriorated.

Current Review Score: 9.0 (8.983)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.0 (8.983) out of 10 for Westdale Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 3 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.0 out of 5 from 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.944 for Westdale Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (34 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 36 Ratings = 4.944

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.039 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Westdale Care Home is based on 3 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.25

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 19 registered maximum number of service users is 3.8. 3 Positive Reviews ÷ 3.8 = 0.789

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
