Thank you to your great team for caring for my father so well after his recent illness. He has lived at Abbeydale for over 4 years and has just had a short spell in hospital. On his return, the team treated him like he was one of their own family who had been sick. He is on the way to a good recovery
and a lot of that is down to your care and patience. I live 5 hours drive away so I really appreciate everything you do.

My mother had been discharged to Abbeydale after 3 months in a local NHS hospital. The level of care and staffing ratio was far better than the NHS. Medical problems were picked up on quickly by staff and the GP associated with the home. The interior looks dated, some of the doors felt 'sticky' - but
probably layers of cleaning products. Security excellent. Staff did their best to encourage eating and drinking - dementia didn't help. Plenty of activities to keep residents animated.
Residents seemed happy and engaged. My mother always looked clean and tidy, nails trimmed, hair brushed. Rooms can look basic, but essential for safety and hygiene.

The staff have been amazing with our aunt, communicating at all times. They help wherever they can, including with outings outside the home and always giving us, her family, 100 percent. They have been very kind to us getting to the home and times when we have been leaving to go home back to Birmingham.
I feel there is a warm feeling in the home itself and they try very hard to make it the very best they can. Nothing is too much trouble for them and it’s truly a family feel. We will be forever grateful for all their hard work, thank you.

Abbeydale is a most secure establishment. It has friendly and helpful staff, with management which has improved of late, being much more approachable and dedicated to rectifying any problems, as quickly as possible. Communication between the home and relatives has also improved, although occasionally
it has been difficult to get any response to a phone call. All areas of the home are regularly cleaned. The garden area is well-maintained and a pleasure to frequent. the bedrooms are adequate but would benefit from a table and chair, although because of their size, might be a little cramped. The en-suite washroom is tiny and consists of just a toilet and sink within a vanity unit. Extra refreshments are provided in addition to the main meals, which are most acceptable. There is always a good selection of fruit readily available. Various activities and regular trips are frequently organised. So there has got to be something of interest for everyone. One improvement which has been suggested, but has apparently been difficult to achieve, is for the home to provide a daily newspaper for the residents. Although less expensive than most other care homes in the area, it does still seem pretty expensive.

Thank you for your honest and positive review. I am glad you are satisfied overall with the service we provide here at Abbeydale and recognise the hard work and dedication of our team. Sadly it is really unfortunate that we are out of the catchment area for a newspaper to be delivered daily but we support our residents to access news alternatively via the radio/Alexa in the conservatory or the new round on the television daily. Staff also do try and bring one in when requested where possible. we strive to give our residents a quality of life different from most other services available and feel it is so important to integrate into the community and have activities outside the home as well as in-house activities. I am so pleased with your feedback related to this. Thank you again for your kind words.

Mum moved to Abbeydale in a hurry after being advised that her previous home was closing. I've found the staff to be patient and caring and they all perform their roles well. Management is efficient and appears to be well respected. Plenty of activities provided. I'm more than satisfied.

From day one of Mum's admittance I knew it was a place she could call home. This is not just “somewhere to place“ our loved ones, this is a home from home.
Mum was admitted in May 2023 and to this day she is always lovely dressed, clean and happy. The staff are all long-term permanent and born to
be carers. Residents are treated like members of a large extended family.
The food is varied and plentiful. All the staff know each resident, their likes and dislikes and treat them with dignity always.
Lots of trips and fun things to do for those who wish to join in. Quiet areas for those who need it. Interaction in abundance.
I can finally relax knowing she is safe and very well cared for 24/7.

I joined my wife for the first time to make a visit to my father-in-law over a weekend.
It was nice to see all the staff on shift in uniform and were all busy giving out tea and biscuits.
All the residents I saw seemed happy, sitting around chatting and being looked after by the team.
The home was
clean and a spilled tea was soon mopped up and a new cuppa given to the resident.
My visit to his room was clean and smelled clean too.
There were fireworks planned for the evening and the staff were busy organising the seats and there were raffle tickets being sold too, I bought two, which was going towards a future trip for the residents.
I left feeling grateful to all the team at the home for the hard work they do and felt satisfied he's being looked after very well and is in the right place.
Thank you everyone.

We chose this home for my father who has dementia, on the basis of the person-centred approach of the managers and staff. My father is happy and settled there, and enjoys the full range of activities on offer. We are particularly impressed with the willingness of the staff to take residents out on trips,
which are well planned. Staff deal quickly with his needs when required, and they know him well. There is good continuity in terms of seeing the same staff faces every day. I would like to have a little more advance communication on issues like medication, appointments and health needs. Overall, I am very pleased with the choice of home.

Thank you so much for your honest review. Here at Abbeydale, we all take pride in our roles and have just as much enjoyment from our trips as our residents do. We find having outings planned gives our residents something to look forward to and, as they help with planning our trips, they enjoy the overall experience giving them purpose and independence. We appreciate all feedback and we are glad to hear that both Dad and yourself are having and overall good experience here at Abbeydale.

I am so grateful for the help and care given to my mother. The staff were so caring, and everyone was treated like members of their own family. She was treated with the utmost dignity by the staff, who were excellent.
The home and her room were always clear and tidy. She loved joining in with all the
activities and fun the staff provided. I had felt guilty having placed Mum in a care home, but the staff also helped me through this, so I never needed to worry about her.
I would recommend this home to anyone.

My mother spent around 8 months in Abbeydale. We as a family picked the home after reading their information ie, activities caring staff, well cared for residents. Sadly we were very wrong. The staff were unhelpful, ignorant and uncaring. They have been heard and seen speaking to elderly people in an
unprofessional and cold way. I witnessed a lady being moved to the dining table without using hoist in a very rushed manner that clearly frightened her. My mum went from a very proud well-presented lady, to being extremely unkempt. Her hair was greasy and she smelled. She would cry for the staff to wash her. The meals were not nutritional and the evening meal was always a sandwich. Then lockdown came and my mum deteriorated even more. She had to be seen at the hospital for swollen legs the doctors said was through immobility. She had untreated ulcers in her mouth that she is now receiving hospital treatment for. We moved my mum to a new care home and the difference is absolutely amazing. Very poor hygiene in the home.

We moved my nan into this care home back in December 2019 after her being sadly diagnosed with dementia. She used to live in the Bolton area and I thought it was best to move her closer by myself into a Bury care setting then myself, who was her main carer to keep my eye on her. This care home was
one out of three that I looked around, and it stood out to me, I really got the impression it was the right home for Nan activities wise, etc. as she's very active. The staff all seemed very nice. Well sadly I was totally wrong. Nan was left in a chair 24 hours a day and never did any sort of activities. To the point her legs were very swollen for this reason. Doctor's notes prove this. Staff spoke to Nan with a very disturbing attitude which I witnessed myself whilst on the phone to my nan. Management very poor as every time a complaint was made or an issue raised nothing was ever dealt with in the correct way. My nan used to cry for a shower on the phone. How is this proper care? The list could go on...

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.457) out of 10 for Abbeydale Residential Care Home - Bury is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.557 for Abbeydale Residential Care Home - Bury is calculated as follows: ( (67 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (8 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.557

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Abbeydale Residential Care Home - Bury is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 32 registered maximum number of service users is 6.4, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
