Care staff very good but as my brother is very deaf and can only see big print he gets bored.
New weekly emails helpful.
His room is dark and small but as he is hardly in there, its important.
I would like to be notified if the funds he has at the home run low. His account went into the red but
I didn't know.

My mum seemed very unsettled at first at Brookdale Care Home but I see such a difference in her recently. The staff work hard to care for and nurture the residents. Initially, the communication seemed rather weak between the care home and our family but I feel vast improvements have been made and I
would recommend Brookdale in an instant. The staff work tirelessly, they go over and beyond to encourage and include residents in activities and events. They work so hard to make the lives of the elderly residents better.

So much goodness caring and compassion we have recently received, and over the past year and a half, has been outstanding.
All the people at Brookdale really care. They treat the residents and their relatives with respect.

Lovely staff who look after my aunty with such care and kindness, thank you to all the staff for everything you do. One staff member took me over to the dementia unit to see the coffee shop which is amazing and showed me the menu and activities that the residents can do.

The staff are lovely and care for my Nan so wonderfully. three ladies especially just make my nans day. I love having my lunch with her and the care home makes that possible.
They keep us regularly updated with the activities they do and photos and videos are always being posted. Couldn’t ask for
more.

First impressions when we came to visit was as soon as we entered, we knew this was the place for our mum. The staff answered all our queries, making it a smooth transition for Mum and us, to have peace of mind that the care and the home were right.
Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff,
all the staff smile (even when they are having a rubbish day themselves).
Overall, the family are pleased that Mum is being cared for with respect and dignity.

My mother was a resident from mid-October 2023, she died in the home on 2nd Jan 2024.
My experiences of the care are mixed. The senior staff generally had little or no time for us and we felt they were unapproachable. The junior staff on the whole were lovely and very helpful. I did not trust that
my mother was being fed regularly or given enough to drink, and being left in bed for long periods in the day.
One time we visited the care quality inspector was talking to me and the senior staff were ever so nice giving me updates on my mother.
The next day in the absence of the Inspector we were ignored yet again.
Since my mother died I have not heard from the management of the home. No condolences have been offered.
I would not recommend Brookdale.

Reply from Lois Samuels, Care Manager at Brookdale Care Home

We are very saddened that you felt your Mother’s last days and your experience of Brookdale was not of that, that we strive to do. We take on board your comments and will discuss as a team any improvements we can make. We are very sorry for the loss, of your Mother.

I just wanted to share my recent experiences of the service they give to my mother. She is in the dementia care unit and unfortunately has been unwell recently, resulting in visits to A&E with long waits. On every occasion, they always ensure a carer stays with my mother, until either sent back or admitted.
As I live over 2 hours drive away, it is always good to know this. As she wasn’t well, I drove up twice this week, the first time she was in A&E so I witnessed how the carers interacted with her. I am not sure if we can name them but two staff members in particular were both great at keeping Mum settled and calm.
Finally, what they do in the way of activities, the cleanliness of the home, standards of food and are all to be commended.

My father-in-law has always been a fiercely independent person but was struggling on his own to take care of himself and often refused the help that home carers offered and was depressed and forgetting to eat due to delirium and dementia. However, following yet another spell in hospital, he was persuaded
to consider moving into residential care for his own safety. We stayed away for a few days so that the staff could help him to settle in and to our surprise, when we next visited, he looked happy and well and the staff reported that he was enjoying the food. He really likes the staff and enjoys their company. It is apparent to us that the staff are extremely caring and go out of their way to make the residents comfortable.

Without doubt Brookdale must be at least one of the top care homes in UK.
All the staff without exception are exemplary, they are friendly and know your name and always make you feel very welcome.
Chose this care home because my mum was the happiest there (it is a 32 mile round trip unfortunately).
Everyone
is so friendly and loving towards my mum. I always know she is in good hands and safe.
Keep up the good work guys, you should be proud of yourselves.

My mother moved into Brookdale one week before her 100th birthday, suffering from delirium and dementia, very distressed, agitated and refusing to stay. We stayed away for a few days for her to settle in. The staff were extremely patient and caring and we were relieved to see her smiling on a video
of celebrating her 100th birthday. Each time we visited or phoned, the staff were welcoming and ready to tell us how Mum was doing. The care Mum received, when at times agitated and uncooperative, was excellent and we were confident she was being well looked after.

In December 2021, my 99-year-old mother was transferred to Brookdale specialist Dementia Unit after three months in hospital following a bad fall. I was extremely concerned how she would settle after always being looked after in her own home. From the outset, Brookdale welcomed her. Some weeks later,
she celebrated her 100th birthday, and the carers helped so much in making her special day happy and memorable.
Brookdale is a hugely warm-hearted and uplifting care home. I can't imagine the care being bettered. The sensitivity shown to my mum and also to me has been remarkable and so very welcome. Whenever I have any questions, they have also been fully listened to and answered with real understanding and exceptional emotional support. It has been difficult to leave my mum as I don't live nearby, but I know that she is wonderfully looked after and happy. This helps enormously. She enjoys her room, which is painted in warm colours and having a coffee and cake in the delightful cafe. I want to thank all the staff and carers, the cleaners, the ladies in the laundry - everyone who I regularly see when I visit or telephone. They are tremendous.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Your mum is an absolute pleasure to have and is such a lovely lady. We're so pleased we could make her birthday a special one and that she had a fantastic time! It's a pleasure to receive your phone calls for updates too, and we're so happy you and your mum are pleased with the standard of care we provide. Your positive feedback has been passed on to our dedicated team!

Recently caught up with a family member regarding my old neighbour who resides at the care home and he was telling me all about the fantastic work that goes on within the home. With help of my son over Facebook, we managed to see the residents of Brookdale went on a bus ride to Blackpool which under
the current circumstances is a great team effort by all the staff there, making sure everything is accounted for but at the same time giving the residents a trip away and many memories made I am sure.
I am still isolating a lot of the time but I am looking forward to coming to see my old friend soon.

My daughter visited 9 other homes and she knew when she visited Brookdale this would be the home for me, she was right. I have my independence here and I can join in any of the activities.
I have no worries. Four meals a day and no bills. We enjoy BBQ'S in the summer, trips out and all of the staff
are very caring. I feel this is my home and there is no doubt about that.

My dad has been at Brookdale since early December. He's come on leaps and bounds since he was in hospital in November with multiple issues. He's thriving at Brookdale and looks physically well, although misses being at home and in contact with the family. Using both the Rainbow Retreat to visit weekly,
as well as using the pre-arranged video calls on the iPad, my dad is keeping in touch with family overseas. Seeing pictures of him on Facebook are a delight. While we can only second guess what he's thinking, the whole family really appreciate the care and attention he is receiving. The staff are really responsive to any request, encouraging us to visit at the retreat, ensuring that any of Dad's needs are met (chiropodist), etc. I can't say enough good things about Brookdale and the staff. Brookdale was recommended to me by my friend and luckily for us all, there was space for him when he needed it. Thanks.

Amazing care home, cannot fault one thing about this place. My dad was cared for hereafter he was given a terminal cancer diagnosis which also affected him mentally. This was very challenging for the staff as they had never dealt with this before and my dad was so poorly. We will be eternally grateful
for the way they cared for my dad, the managers along with other members of their team treated him with such dignity and respect and we never worried when we had to leave him in their care. They treated him like they would treat their own family. They also supported us through what was a very difficult time and we wouldn’t have been able to get through it without them.

The time had come when my stepfather could no longer care for our mother at home, so we had to start making plans to look for a new ‘home’ for our mum. Due to Mum's progressing dementia, certain homes could not take her, but Brookdale was different. We had many meetings with the management to discuss
our mum's needs and the scenarios what would happen if her dementia goes to a stage where they couldn’t manage her, but they were open and honest all the way along. Mum has a new family now, the carers are her new family, and sometimes she doesn’t recognise us at all. When you get over this hurdle, you will accept the changes a lot easier. To see her happy face, makes you realise, that she’s in the best place. The care home is clean, there is no clinical smell in it, there are many activities happening, which is great to see. The food looks very well prepared and appropriate for residents with needs, and daily treats are still given out, which is a nice touch.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.150)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.150) out of 10 for Brookdale Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.474 for Brookdale Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (73 Excellents x 5) + (35 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 116 Ratings = 4.474

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.676 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brookdale Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.776

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
