The care home staff are always busy taking care of the residents as you would expect, however during the pandemic they have gone above and beyond to engage all the residents in activities to keep them stimulated and keeping their spirits up. It’s been a joy to see how they have been motivating the residents
and staff in their pictures posted on Facebook.

Brookdale have been fantastic with Mum, she always seems so happy and I know she is well looked after, nothing is too much trouble. I often turned up at the window without them knowing and they would happily bring Mum over to talk to me. Now Rainbow Retreat is up and running we can all stay warm and
love the one to one connection we now have, obviously we long for the day we can actually give her a kiss. All the staff are lovely and pleasant which makes you feel very comfortable knowing Mum is being well cared for.

Since my mum and dad went into Brookdale Care Home in July, they have had the best care. It has been a difficult time for us all as a family but the staff have always kept us informed and involved with mum and dad's care. Staff are always friendly, approachable and caring. If I have a worry, I know
I can speak to the senior carers, they listen and together we agree on the best way forward for mum and dad. I think the staff are really hardworking and over the past few months have gone above and beyond doing things that I would normally do under normal circumstances if I could go in, e.g. mum's nails, trimming their hair and many more. Then the building of the Rainbow Retreat visiting pod has given us all a glimmer of hope at the end of a horrible year, so we will soon be able to visit them in a safe environment, this will be good for both residents' and relatives' emotional well being and mental health, I thank you all so much for your hard work and continued support.

Hi Sue,

Thank you so much for your wonderful review of Brookdale - we are very appreciative and it's always lovely for staff to hear that their hard work is being appreciated by the families of the residents we care for. We love having your mum and dad here as part of our Brookdale family and that we can keep you all connected during the pandemic with our covid-safe visitation lodge.

Brookdale is a shining example of how every care home should be. From care staff, office, finance, activities organisers, house maintenance and catering staff - everyone does their utmost to care for everyone. At an incredibly difficult time, they stepped up to support me in a decision no one wants
to make. I wish I could thank all the staff but I know they would see that as unnecessary as it’s just what they do.

The staff at the home are very kind and caring, the entertainment coordinators are excellent making sure there are activities, trips out and arts and crafts, singalong and dancing on most days. Brookdale has a nice homely feel and the residents are treated with respect. The only thing lacking is a nice
garden area for the residents to sit in the summer. More use could be made of the lovely conservatory in the dementia block - ie taking residents over from the residential part of the home so they could sit in the sunshine as there is just the small back yard which smokers and staff use but, overall, it is a good, well run home. The food also seems good with a choice at every meal. I looked at ten homes before choosing Brookdale which has a good staff to resident ratio to optimise the level of care they offer and the manager is also very nice. The staff seem to genuinely care and I would recommend it.

This is a loving, caring home where staff become family to residents. I visit a friend there and each and every time I go the lovely residents are happy, active and content. The activity coordinator goes above and beyond to ensure the residents have enjoyable experiences. A lovely safe caring home.

My mother was admitted to Brookdale Care Home for a period of respite care after a stay in hospital. During her stay, we found the staff to be very caring, communicable, extremely helpful, very caring and treated her with the utmost dignity. Whenever we met with the management they were very helpful
and also very professional explaining everything clearly to us and also couldn't be more helpful. We felt confident that we could approach them with any concerns knowing they would be happy to listen and do their best to help.

Mum has dementia and the specialist care she received at Brookdale was fantastic. We have learned over time that activities make a significant difference to the quality of life for a dementia patient. The activities that are run at Brookdale were fantastic and really inclusive; you could tell Mum was really enjoying herself.

Overall, the management and staff were extremely helpful at a difficult time for us and I can't thank and recommend them enough.

My dad spent a month in the specialist dementia unit here after being discharged from a hospital. He settled very quickly and felt at ease with all his carers. Me and the rest of the family were completely happy with the level of care and commitment from all the staff. The senior staff were lovely,
kind and helpful and also the managers were welcoming, caring and friendly. There seemed to be lots of activities organised for the well-being of the residents. During what was a traumatic time for the family it was reassuring to know he was being cared for so well.

We hold a 30minute service of worship in the lounge area each month.
Compared to the other care homes we visit, Brookdale is a happy and very welcoming home. It is clean and bright and the carers, including the manager, are always getting involved so we are not left on our own with the residents.
I was especially impressed during our September visit by the new 'memories' lounge, with a seaside holiday theme and suitable furnishings. The activities co-ordinator had invited a local 'paint-a-pot' company into the home to decorate and prepare a photo frame for each resident to get involved with.

I found the care home has a very friendly and caring environment, the staff are great with my sister, they seem to have enough time to chat to her, and nothing is too much trouble, activities are adequate for the residents. The home's manager is brilliant with the residents, nothing is too much trouble
for her, she is very caring, she is very good to talk to and listens to what you have to say, if she can't answer a question at that moment, she will get back to you when she finds out the answer to your question. All in all very happy for my sister's welfare.

My ninety three year old father is a recent resident of Brookdale. He has dementia and has had at least two strokes that I know of, affecting his speech. I live in the USA and therefore visiting is often not so easily arranged. The Care Manager has often offered assistance to my mother, who has not
always been the easiest person to deal with! Also, recently, he kindly drove my father and my mother to my father's GP appointment.

My family is very appreciative of the 'extra mile' that the staff of the home have shown towards not only my father, but my mother too.

The home appears well run with always a good number of staff on duty. It is small, friendly and comfortable and my father always looks clean, comfortable and well fed. There are always plenty of opportunity for visiting my father and the staff are friendly, approachable and informative. The placement
is situated near my father's last address so my mother is able to visit him (as there are good bus routes) if I am not available to take her in the car.

My wife has been in Brookdale Care Home for just two years, following a transfer from another home in the same ownership.
She had been diagnosed with dementia in May 2013, I was facing my own health problems and I required hospitalisation. My wife's condition was deteriorating and it was difficult
to care for her at home.
She is compliant with conditions in the care home, but she cannot grasp the logic of her situation, and this makes her mood difficult to contend with. She is provided with care in a positive and sympathetic manner.

Mum stayed at Brookdale for only 5 weeks. We thought it would be much longer but she passed away. The staff at Brookdale were fabulous. They got to know us all very well. Mum was well cared for and we as family were always welcomed and treated very well. The team were well prepared when it became clear
that mum was declining and everything they said would happen did. Mum's passing was so special and Brookdale enabled it to be so. A wonderful team.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.150)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.150) out of 10 for Brookdale Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.474 for Brookdale Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (73 Excellents x 5) + (35 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 116 Ratings = 4.474

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.676 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brookdale Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.776

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
