I am a wheelchair user and spent 6 months in this hellhole. Staff were lovely but ran on a minimum staffing level and so were overworked. Their roles were changed continually, one day a carer next day cook or cleaner. Building and contents were old decreped, cheap and nasty with no disabled access.
Food was appalling. Frozen, burnt or uncooked tiny portions. Always cold, often slop you wouldn't give to a dog. No fresh food , fruit or vegetables I ended up in hospital with food poisoning (a nice break). Bought my own food after this so lived all winter on sandwiches etc. Showers only possible at 2pm. 98% of residents had dementia. Anyone with full capacity was, as a result ,socially isolated. I spent every day and night lying on my bed. This did untold damage to my physical and mental health.

Reply from Sanjay Raja, Deputy manager at Woolston Mead Rest Home

We are sorry that you feel this way. Your placement was an emergency into the care home and for a very short stay of a few weeks by your social worker ,who in fact took 6 months to find you a new care home. Our staff are trained and entitled to work in different areas of our care home if they so wish. The cooks position was actually recommended by yourself so I am surprised with your comments. You bought your own food sometimes as you loved the uber eats We have never had any complaints with our food in the past You requested showers at 12 o'clock, unfortunately it is lunchtime at that time and alternate times were always offered to you. You were not isolated in your room but you refused to come out of your room and as you were unable to move and you were bed bound. I hope you find happiness in your new home

My mum has been living at Woolston Mead for 3 years due to no longer being able to care for herself at home. She always tells me that she loves the staff and that the food is lovely. I find the staff to be polite and helpful with both my mum and myself when I have dealt with them. The home is a lovely
old property in a nice location not too far from the beach. It is always clean and tidy when I visit and Mum has a nice room of her own. I think that the manager is having a positive impact on the home and have seen improvements since she joined. She is approachable and helpful when I have discussed anything relating to my mum's care.

The staff at Woolston Mead are always pleasant and are patient, supportive and caring towards my uncle who has struggled with now having to reside in a care home and leave his own home. They attend all medical appointments with him and treat him with respect and kindness.

My dad has been a resident here for 5 months and I have no hesitation in recommending the care home. The staff are so kind and caring and polite. The home is very clean and spacious. It's obvious that all the staff care very deeply for the residents. The manager is always on hand to answer questions
I may have about my dad's care.

My Father's health and quality of life improved so much under the care of Woolston Mead. The staff are so friendly and helpful, the management are always contactable and work with you to resolve any issues that may arise. I would be happy to recommend Woolston Mead to anyone needing a rest home for
a loved one.

My Dad has been in the care home for five years. The staff are kind and very friendly and have looked after and treated my Dad like a member of the family. He hasn’t been well recently and they have stepped up and taken good care of him and kept the family well-informed throughout.

No stars. My mum had an unwitnessed fall in August 2022, 4 weeks after CQC had stated residents were at an increased risk and gave them a requires improvement. Mum was checked at 4.00 and found after 7.00am at the bottom of a full flight of stairs which appears she may have hit her head on a stairlift.
The inquest stated her injuries were catastrophic, and she died after suffering for 10 days from a traumatic head injury.
Care Manager at the time now no longer there.
Care worker on duty that night who videoed mum lying motionless at the bottom of the stairs and sent it to a colleague not on duty via a mobile messaging app also no longer there.
They have had to do an action plan and lessons learnt so this situation will never happen again.
Risk assessments were miscalculated so mum had been classed at high risk 2 months before her death.
No condolences from the home and heard nothing from CQC. Still waiting from Safeguarding.
I regret every waking minute mum went into this god-forsaken place.

The staff at Woolston Mead Rest Home are very friendly and down to earth. I'm always made to feel welcome. I've seen how caregivers treat the residents and am always impressed, especially by their attention to detail, that goes from the cooks to the cleaners too. I often chat with some of the residents
and they seem happy and content.

This is a lovely care home and the staff are so caring, my mum is well-cared for and loved by all the staff. I wouldn't want her anywhere else to be honest. We as a family are always welcomed when we visit and I've seen for myself the care and respect given to other residents, not just my mum.

This place is disgusting. Visited today and found my family member looking very uncared for. The lounge the residents were sitting in stank of urine and there were stains all over the floor. No Christmas decorations up or anything, only a pathetic looking tree in the corner of the room. The management
and owners of this place should be ashamed that they are leaving people like this.

Reply from The Manager at Woolston Mead Rest Home

The complainer had not followed the complaints procedure and notified the person in charge in order to evidence and clarify matters on the day. The complaint was investigated straight away. We did not find the relative in concern unclean or uncared for. There were no urine stains or smells in the lounge. We had a Christmas tree and decorations in the lounge and another in the dining room. We were fully staffed with a full-time cleaner that day. There were no complaints from any other visitors. The complainer was not the next of kin and hardly visited the home. We informed the next of kin, who visited regularly and they were very disturbed and upset about the complaint. The complainer was invited to a meeting to discuss but we never heard from them. The governing authorities were notified of this and they visited unannounced to check everything and were happy with everything in the care home.

The staff in Woolston Mead are absolutely lovely. So caring and patient. Nothing is a trouble to them. They reassure the residents and put them at ease constantly. My mum was a resident here for a few months but unfortunately had to go into a nursing home due to health issues. She was so sad that she
couldn't stay on as shed settled in and loved the staff. It was like a home from home and we miss them.

Reply from Gillian Myles, Manager at Woolston Mead Rest Home

Thank you for your kind words. I know this will bring a much-needed smile to all the staffs' faces when I show them. This has been a tough time for everyone but our staff have given their all to try and keep things as normal as possible and continue to bring smiles to our residents' faces. Your mum is missed at Woolston Mead and her picture hangs proudly in our reception area. Staff and residents ask about her all the time and say how much she is missed. We hope mum and all the family are doing well. Thank you again for such a lovely review.

My mum has been a resident at Woolston Mead care home since August 2014.

Since going to live at Woolston Mead my mums quality of life has improved considerably. She has put weight on as she is eating better and she enjoys what she eats. She sleeps better than she did when she lived alone, she likes

to stay up late and the carers are happy to help her to bed when she's ready to go to bed, she doesn't have to go to bed when she's told to.

My mum enjoys banter with the care staff, they are all very friendly and pleasant with my mum and the other residents. When I visit my mum, which is usually three times a week I can see for myself how caring the staff are to her and the other residents.

When I visit my mum she says " I love living here, everyone is so kind". This reduces my anxiety about her living in residential care.

My mum is a smoker, the Manager and staff have devised a care plan so that she can have a cigarette in a designated area regularly throughout the day.

I would like to thank any family member or friend of any of the residents with us at Woolston Mead who has given their time and effort to write a review with reference to Woolston Mead, we are like so many care providers at present doing our very best to provide the best possible service that we can despite all of the cutbacks and negativity surrounding providers in this field.

Since my auntie has moved in this autumn, I have been impressed with the genuine care and attention given to her by all of the staff.
Each resident is treated as an individual, staff are consistent with their care, demonstrating patience and humour daily. All care staff have worked to ensure that
her transition from her home to Woolston Mead has been smooth, accommodating & suitable to her needs & requirements.

Current Review Score: 8.1 (8.132)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.1 (8.132) out of 10 for Woolston Mead Rest Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 3.7 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 3.739 for Woolston Mead Rest Home is calculated as follows: ( (52 Excellents x 5) + (7 Goods x 4) + (10 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (20 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 92 Ratings = 3.739

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.393 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Woolston Mead Rest Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 28 registered maximum number of service users is 5.6. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 5.6 = 0.893

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
