Lear House is a welcoming home offering residential care and respite for up to 24 older people with a range of care needs. Set in its own leafy grounds, within a quiet residential area of West Kirby, Lear House is still close enough to the centre of town to provide easy access to transport links, local shops and amenities.

There are multiple communal spaces throughout the home. Residents can enjoy the entertainment on offer in the lounge, relax with a book in the snug, meet up with friends and family in the first floor lounge or enjoy a warm afternoon in the garden room and make use of the kitchenette facilities.

The dining room, recently redecorated in a bright and colourful scheme, is where residents enjoy their daily nutritious meals prepared in-house by the chef and the team. Residents can also participate in a range of activities and entertainment such as Knit & Natter, learning French, print making, flower craft and animal visits or enjoy singing along with visiting singers and musicians on a weekly basis. The enclosed sensory garden, with its patio area and garden room, has become a popular meeting place for residents and their families when the weather gets warmer; there is always plenty to do. They also have a dedicated hair salon for visiting hairdressers, should any of the residents require a tidy up or even a restyle.

The 24 bedrooms are situated on the ground floor and first floor, with lift and/or stairlift access to the upper floor. Each room is spacious, with a pleasing outlook, and they encourage residents to add their own personal touches to help them feel more settled and at home.

The staff are most caring and look after everyone as if they were their own relatives. This same care and concern is shown for the relatives themselves. This inspires confidence. Good leadership. Good care. Good caring people.

My aunt transferred to Lear House from a nearby Abbeyfield home that was closing, and as this was at the height of lockdown, we were very anxious as to how the move would go and that we weren't able to be on hand to help.
We are delighted with how well she has settled into her new home. She is not
usually keen to join in with things, but the home provides a great variety of stimulating activities and she is now joining in with gusto!
When we were able to visit her in June, we were very impressed by the friendly, organised welcome we received.
It was lovely to see her looking so well and agree for, and she was chirpy and cheerful.
It's very reassuring to know how well she is being cared for, especially as we live 190 miles away!

Throughout my mother's stay, she was treated with respect and care. She was continually watched by staff to enable her to proceed through the home independently, so maintaining her dignity. In the last few months, extra care and desire to enhance her quality of life was demonstrated. Staff went beyond
their job description to facilitate all the residents and to produce an experience as new to their own homes. Whenever I had trouble - it was dealt with immediately.

My mother was a resident at Lear House for the last four years of her life. The care she received was excellent. She was mobile and active when she first arrived with some memory loss problems. In the last few years, she needed help with personal care and walking. The staff supported her in every way,
were kind, cheerful and respectful. The family felt so blessed to have found such a wonderful home from home for our mother. There was good food, a relaxed and happy atmosphere, and plenty of activities if you wanted them. Well-appointed rooms, bright lounges and a pretty garden but most of all love and kindness.

Like many older people, my mother was a very independent lady and was reluctant to enter Lear House. Within a short time, however, she was completely at home. Her room was light and spacious but most importantly the staff treated her with both respect and with never-failing humour. I will always be
grateful that the last two years of her long life were very happy ones.

Mum came to the home in July at a very difficult time in the pandemic. We have been fortunate that we have been able to see her from a distance throughout and now the home has sorted a safe pod for us to see and speak to her with the winter colder months coming. This is fabulous for us and mum. She
has now settled in and we are appreciative of the care and time she has been given. We can phone anytime and speak to her too. There are some activities and mum enjoys the singer especially. Mum always comments on the good food and catering staff. All the staff are kind and warm to her and to me when I phone or visit. It has been very difficult for us all as we have never been in the home and mum was very unsettled but we are now so appreciative that mum is cared for and settled. A big thank you to all the staff.

As a family, we are so grateful to all the staff at Lear House, who looked after our mum for over 5 years. Mum had dementia but she enjoyed all the activities (especially the music) provided at Lear House and she was very happy there. She was shown genuine kindness and love, especially in her difficult
last few weeks, when the staff really went the extra mile to look after her.

Nan had a fall at home and was admitted to hospital. As a family, we decided it would be for the best if we found her a nursing home where she would be well looked after. After visiting several homes in the area, I arranged to visit Lear House. I was shown around the building and saw that it seemed
like a place where Nan would feel at home. It was very clean and her room was a fantastic size with an ensuite bathroom. I met some of the staff who were extremely helpful and polite. Nan moved in and has settled in really well. She enjoys the many activities on offer and is really enjoying her meals. We worried she wouldn't settle because she has lived on her own for over 50 years, but the staff have encouraged her to join in and she is really benefiting from the social interaction. Overall I would recommend Lear House to anyone, because we know she is receiving a really high level of care from a great team of people.

Perhaps the first point I would like to highlight is TRUST. I totally trust this care home to look after all the needs of my aunt and fully believe they will always act in her best interests. I cannot speak too highly of the staff both from a management and care perspective. No effort is spared to ensure
my aunts stay is as happy and comfortable as possible.
The activities and entertainment offered are first class and involve much input from the local community. My aunt, despite her frailty, enjoys her time at this care home and most importantly feels safe and well cared for.

My mum and dad's wish many years ago was that they would reside in Abbeyfield in their latter years. Dad died 20 years ago and mum had been a resident for the last 4 years. As a family, we have been extremely pleased with the care, patience and support given to mum. It was a real home from home for
her. Always smelt lovely and the staff could not do enough for her and us as a family. In my Eulogy at her funeral in February I said the following, "We cannot really express our feelings on how grateful we are for the care mum received during the 4 years particularly over the final weeks and the last weekend. As I have said to many people Lear House came into its own in its care of Mum, allowing me to stay and the rest of the family free access to be with her. The staff were wonderful with her and were able to reach her in ways we could not or found difficult to do.

When it became evident that our elderly long-term friend could no longer cope with living in her ‘Independent Living’ accommodation, we began the search for a suitable Residential Home in the Wirral area. This proved to be an exhaustive and eye-watering educative exercise for us, as part of our brief
as Lasting Powers of Attorney for her was to ensure that any new accommodation should be to the highest level of quality her budget would allow. We embarked on several months of unannounced visiting and inspection of some fifteen local Homes which all fell into a similar price-range, (a single exception was where the weekly price was similar to the monthly price for the others and was thus excluded). Eventually, and with some relief, we found the Abbeyfield Trust’s joint premises of Lear House and its Elliot House annexe, in West Kirby. Here, we noticed an aura of happiness and laughter amongst Staff and Residents, highest levels of cleanliness and tidiness throughout the buildings and grounds, a generous and visible presence of care staff, and a sense of business professionalism: a combination of factors we had not seen at the other homes. There was no pervading smell of urine or cheap disinfectant, no shabbiness of décor, the Staff members were wearing identification uniforms, people were smiling and approachable, and the ambience was one of sincere welcome. Initially, our friend entered the smaller community of Elliot House, where she had been offered the opportunity of staying for a week’s Respite care, which she enjoyed so much that she wanted to take up residence immediately. Within 6 months she had moved into the larger Lear House, where she now has a room which, as part of the ongoing redecoration programme, has been colour-code painted to help her cope with her increasing dementia. We are confident that Lear House deals more than adequately with matters of medication, Doctor visits, matters of intimate washing and hygiene, her laundry, ensuring our friend’s daily dignity and pride in the clothes she wears, her weekly hairdressing events, chiropody, the extensive range of entertainment, and social events which include Burns’ Afternoons (complete with a Piping-in of the Haggis), Christmas Parties, Summer Fetes, and occasional Outings. She is particularly pleased with the high quality of the ‘home-cooked’ food and daily menus, and the pleasant staff who prepare it. Every time we visit our friend she thanks us for finding her this wonderful place to live. Additionally, each visit to our friend in Lear House is a joy for us, knowing she is being cared for so well.

Over the past three and a half years, we have found Lear House the perfect place for our mother to reside. From living a fairly miserable and lonely existence at home, she now feels content and safe with all her needs catered for by a dedicated staff.
The personal care is second to none. In emergencies
where intimate care is required, the staff deal with the situation with haste and good humour. Any concerns that may be raised eg. Is she remembering to clean her teeth? These are prioritised and attended to.
My mother, who suffers from dementia, has a new lease of life. The activities programme is varied and provides her with the company that she had previously missed at home. A beautiful Labrador (a therapy pet) visits weekly and it was an unforgettable moment to witness the mutual recognition between mum and this wonderful animal when I first saw them together. There have been occasional outings for those who are able, which mum particularly enjoyed, and I hope these will be repeated.

Mum moved into Lear House 16 months ago.
From the start I have felt that Mum is treated with respect, dignity, with kindness and also good humour.
I have always found the manager and all staff very approachable.
Mum's bedroom, with ensuite facilities, is well decorated and furnished and is kept
clean and tidy. The large airy sitting room has a terrace where Mum enjoys sitting on a sunny day.
Mum enjoys her meals.
The activities coordinator ensures throughout the week that there is a varied programme of activities for the residents. She actively encourages the residents to join in with these. I'm really pleased Mum takes part in these activities and on my last visit was impressed with how many crossword questions she was able to answer!
I am very happy with Mum's care at Lear House. It's a great comfort to me to know that Mum feels safe.

My association with Lear House was over a five year period while they cared for a close family friend.Their care during this time was faultless both physically and emotionally with great compassion and total commitment to the resident's needs.
I was confident at all times with the comfort and safety
of my friend and shall never forget the staff who became like a second family to us both. I cannot recommend Lear House, the manager and her wonderful staff enough.
