My 96-year-old mother moved to Trepassey from her retirement flat in early June 2023. She was made to feel welcome from the moment she arrived, settled quickly and from being frail and lacking in appetite is now thriving and eating healthily again. Her smile and 'wit' is restored!
Trepassey feels like
a 5* hotel – every facility available, is spotlessly clean and has a beautiful garden setting with sun terraces. Staff (all staff) are professional in all that they do – but alongside that professionalism, there's always a smile, real humanity, genuine kindness and appropriate humour in their engagement with residents/family/visitors.
I find it a joyful and uplifting experience to visit Mum and to be in such a well-managed and positive-minded environment. Thank you.
I'd be happy to live at Trepassey one day...

My mother has been at Trepassey Care Home for a couple of years now and having moved at 89 from a detached house in a different part of the UK, we were anxious about how she'd adjust to residential life. Trepassey care has been great for her. She can't ever not grumble but the grumbles are so minor
that it keeps her going! The most important asset Trepassey has is its staff without whose cheery nature and obvious fondness for the residents, it wouldn't be quite the same.
I have recommended Trepassey to friends who now also have a family member in the home and like me, are very reassured that their loved one is in good and caring hands.

I can only review what I have seen and been told about by my father who was a resident at Trepassey for just over 2 years. At no time did I or my two sisters, ever have any reservations about the care provided by each and every staff member. To me, the staff (and I mean all staff) felt it was not a
job, but a happy team looking after all the residents' needs, no matter what. I cannot speak too highly of their care, professionalism and kindness. The building was always spotless, nothing was too much trouble for me and my father (who in the latter months could be a little demanding), and above all, they had time for Dad just to talk to him about the old days and to make sure he was comfortable and did not need anything. It did not matter what time of the day I called, there was always a warm greeting from everyone and everyone knew Dad, how he was doing and what he had been doing. That to me meant he was cared for properly by people who cared.

Mum was at Trepassey for just over six months and moved there from home when she needed more support for moderate Alzheimers. Based on our experience we would not recommend Trepassey for people with dementia. During her time there Mum became depressed, lost a lot of weight and was barely mobile by the
time she left. Staff numbers seemed low. They were very task-orientated, spending little time with Mum. Staff and managers seemed poorly trained, sometimes confrontational, unsympathetic and generally unwilling to take time to discuss concerns. Specific incidents include lack of clinical and mental care, disregarding her privacy, shouting at her, being unkind, not ensuring she was wearing hearing aids and glasses, not noticing when her wounds needed dressing and refusing to take her back after admission to A&E for a fall even though the hospital were happy to discharge her the same day. Since moving to a new care home Mum has gained over a stone, has regained mobility and is much happier.

Reply from Rachel Tucker, Registered Manager at Trepassey

Thank you for your feedback. We always welcome feedback at Trepassey. We are very sorry you feel you had such a bad experience. This comes as a shock to us as we have never received feedback where anyone else has experienced the same feelings towards Trepassey as you have. Our residents are flourishing and doing very well. We are glad your Mum is happier and doing well in her new home which is more suited to her high dependency needs. Apologies again for not accepting your mum back into Trepassey but this was done in her best interests and this was explained to yourselves at the time. As your mum's dementia and challenging behaviour had progressed at such a quick pace, it was clear that she needed EMI dementia care which unfortunately we cannot offer.

Current Review Score: 8.3 (8.336)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.3 (8.336) out of 10 for Trepassey is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.4 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.917 for Trepassey is calculated as follows: ( (22 Excellents x 5) + (2 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 4.917

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.419 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Trepassey is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 34 registered maximum number of service users is 6.8. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.8 = 0.294

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
