Absolutely fantastic care home!
Such a warm welcoming place, always spotlessly clean.
All staff are extremely friendly and have given my brother the very best care possible.
My brother is so happy and settled at Acorn House, he enjoys helping staff around the home and joining in the many activities
during the day, he also thoroughly enjoys the days out with other residents and staff.
I would absolutely recommend this place to anybody.
As a family, we couldn't wish for my brother to reside anywhere else.

Reply from Jen, Home Manager at Acorn House Care Centre

It is our absolute pleasure to care for your brother, to continually engage him in activities, and to continue to support him with being independent and accessing everything he would access if he was living outside of the home. Acorn House is a home-from-home.

My Father spent his last months at Acron House. I visited every few days to experience life there. He enjoyed the company of other residents but particularly the relationships with members of staff. He loved the friendly teasing and attention, which brought back the twinkle in his eye. I only ever heard
calm-voiced and gentle support being offered to residents even when situations were not easy. I felt that Dad was living among friends. Thank you so much.

Reply from Jen, Home Manager at Acorn House Care Centre

It has been an honour and a pleasure, caring for your father. At Acorn House we become one big family, all of the staff would like to thank you for giving us the opportunity to provide that care and support not only to your father but also to yourself and the wider family.

Mum has been at Acorn House for four years now... she must be due parole soon.
I have one or two cribs about the outside of the building looking a bit tired and the rooms being small but in the scheme of things, this is pretty unimportant. Mum's care is excellent -- it doesn't matter when I show up,
Mum, and everyone else, is bright and smart and the inside of the building is clean, bright and smart.
Mum actually ended up at Acorn House by accident, but it was a happy accident. I looked at other homes so we had options for Mum but, while doubtless efficient, there was no atmosphere in them. Horrible.
Others have said the same, the best thing about Acorn House is the atmosphere when you walk in. As well as the attentive care, the team is always cheerful. While the main purpose of my visit is to see Mum, you end up chatting to everyone else, too... and I usually get a cup of tea after my long journey north.
In short, I cannot praise the team at Acorn House enough.

Mum has been a resident at Acorn House for 4 years now. She was forced out of her previous care home during Covid due to our complaints over the lack of communication at the worst possible time and the lack of care that she was receiving. What a relief to have found Acorn House. Mum had become very
withdrawn, was always asleep and did not receive the level of personal hygiene care we expect at her previous home. We can't praise the staff at Acorn House enough. Mum is a different person, happy in her environment, nearly always smiling (she has her off days of course), and rarely asleep when we see her. There's always lots going on, all the staff make special effort on themed days, organise activities, parties etc and try their best to get all the residents involved. Mum has remained on the residential floor at Acorn (rather than dementia where she was previously) and that just goes to show that it is the way the staff look after her that has made all the difference. Thank you to all.

Care that comes with love and respect for every person who resides in their home, like their motto says they work in the resident's home. All of the staff show care and love for the residents above and beyond care. The feeling of a happy place to be is apparent when you walk through the door and all
the time you are there.

My relative has been at Acorn House for over 2 years now. He has gone from strength to strength. They have helped him to improve and better his health.
The home has such a homely feel from the moment you walk through the front doors. It really does feel like home.
The staff are outstanding and are
constantly going above and beyond for all residents and their families.

My mum and dad both spent the last few months of their lives at Acorn House. My dad was there first and due to the way he received the care, I moved my mum from another care home, after Dad's passing, into Acorn House. I cannot praise the management, care and kitchen staff enough. My parents were always
clean and well-dressed their rooms were always spotlessly clean and tidy. It was always a wonderful environment to be in when I went to visit. The kitchen staff went out of their way to chat to mum and dad and tried their best to give them the diet they wanted. It was always calm and homely. If ever I have to have care, I hope I end up somewhere like Acorn House. Thank you to everyone at Acorn Care Home, Blackburn, you are amazing.

We are delighted as always with the care my/our father receives from all the staff at Acorn House Care Centre. The staff also allow for his dementia personality for which we are extremely grateful. He is treated with dignity and says he's happy there.
(Special thanks to the cook, he loves her food).

We were lucky to get a vacancy at Acorn House for Mum for when we wanted. They were quick to respond to my enquiry before they even knew the dates we wanted. They made the whole process easy. When I went to see the room I got the impression of a cheerful atmosphere throughout the whole place. Mum was
apprehensive as she had never done a respite stay anywhere. On the day I dropped Mum off, we went to her room. It was warm and cosy without being stifling hot and had ample storage. They took Mum for her lunch in the dining room and she settled immediately. Mum really enjoyed her stay and had settled, joining in, interacting, fully occupied. She enjoyed the morning 'pampering'. She would look forward to staying again if possible.

The home is run to a high standard. Management and staff work hard to keep the home running smoothly in these hard times. Visitors and relatives are always greeted with a welcoming smile and always kept up to date with news and views of the home. Great job, well done.

I think Acorn House is a lovely, clean and comfortable care home. The management staff are friendly and efficient. Mum is happy to stay there which makes my respite breaks far less stressful. I can leave her without having any worry and know she will be cared for. Mum mentioned that her bed was very
uncomfortable and she doesn't like the meals at lunchtime, otherwise no complaints.

Reply from Jackie Hirst, Marketing at Acorn House Care Centre

Thank you for your review, I would just like to address the comments raised regarding the menu. I am very sorry to hear your mum did not enjoy our lunchtime menu, our menus are decided by the residents who reside here at Acorn House, we hold regular resident meetings of which they can raise any issues or requests at that time. We can also offer alternatives on request and I can only apologise if this was not offered to you at the time of your mum's stay. I have introduced a daily menu into the home and I have now requested this be displayed in bedrooms and around the home for people to see. I would also like to apologise about your mum's bed, if I would have known at the time, I could have offered a more comfortable bed or mattress. I am very sorry if your mum was in any distress at night due to this. Thank you for your feedback, I am always looking to improve on our home. We will look forward to seeing you again in the future.

My mother has been a resident of Acorn House for 6 years. She has always been treated with great respect, care, and dignity. I have found all staff to be friendly, approachable, and caring. The meals are all homecooked with fresh ingredients, and there is a varied menu, and individual needs catered
for. My mother has just celebrated her 104th birthday and I cannot thank the staff enough for all their care and attention.

The staff at Acorn continue to do a sterling job with my now bedbound mother. Excellent all-round care means I have full confidence in my mum's wellbeing. Has been particularly helpful and proactive during the pandemic.

Very happy. Whenever we call our Dad is always dressed and smart. The staff are always helpful and friendly in what I imagine can be a very difficult job at times. I can't praise them enough. The food always looks good and is freshly cooked. Acorn House have helped my dad over the 3 years he has lived
there and I will always be grateful for what they do.

Under the lockdown circumstances, it is difficult to visit. She has only been in the home since July 2020, having said that the home has kept her very safe and free from Covid which is something in itself.

Overall I feel my wife is in caring hands. Her looks and demeanour are usually good and although she cannot relate so to me seems to be reasonably content and happy with her surroundings. The staff are always attentive and caringly kind to her, even when my wife who has dementia is not in the friendliest
of moods. It is satisfying to feel she is being well looked after.

In all aspects, care is excellent, caring and far beyond what we expected. Home is welcoming and clearly treats residents as individuals. They show patience, professionalism and a great deal of humanity and good humour. I have no faults that I can find. Apart from my handwriting obviously.

Current Review Score: 9.7 (9.657)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.7 (9.657) out of 10 for Acorn House Care Centre is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.9 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.757 for Acorn House Care Centre is calculated as follows: ( (82 Excellents x 5) + (24 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.757

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.9 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Acorn House Care Centre is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 32 registered maximum number of service users is 6.4, which has been reached with 9 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
