  • Longroyds & Pilling House Care Home, Huddersfield
Longroyds & Pilling is situated in 3 acres of parkland, up a sweeping driveway. Separated into two homes, boasting the ambiance of old world charm. There are independent living apartments beside the home, which offer close care for those who are not yet ready for a 24 hour care environment, but with the peace of mind of having help when needed.

Carers offer residents and their families the support they need during what many find some of the most trying times of their lives. Families are truly grateful for the personal support they receive, when faced with one of life's very difficult decisions and carers pride themselves on continuing that support to residents and their families from the moment they contact throughout the whole of their stay.

The approach to care is simple - look after the person and not the ailment/condition alone - Carers want to get to know their residents and their families, thus enabling them to look after the whole person and not just to concentrate on the task in hand. Staff get to know their clients, who they are, who they were and how they have come to be at the home. Carers get to know their families too and like to understand the dynamics within the family setting and how best they can support these as they build a relationship of trust. They understand that choosing a care home is not just about excellent amenities, but about a true and real understanding of relationships being nurtured, trust being built and a life being lived. Professionals believe in true, real and honest care and keep this at the heart of their approach.

Since transferring my mum from another home I have been so much happier with her care. The carers here are so much more attentive and interactive with the residents. There are plenty of activities to keep residents interested, although, because of Mum's deafness and Alzheimer's, her participation is
very limited. She really enjoys her meals here too. The staff keep me updated if there are any issues I should be aware of.

My mother was a resident in Pilling House from April till September 2018. The care and attention she received while in the home was of a first class standard. I found the staff very attentive and always treated my mother with the utmost respect, she always spoke highly of the staff and enjoyed her stay
with them. Thank again to all the staff.

The process of pre-admission assessment/interview was handled very efficiently and sensitively by all staff. Dad was made to feel very welcome and is settling in well. He says everyone is very friendly and the food is wonderful. It is a big change for him but I cannot see how it could have gone more
smoothly. Thanks to all concerned.

The staff are wonderful and look after my mum with dignity and respect. The food is of an excellent quality, however, my gripe is with the grounds of the home. My mum likes to walk around and all the potholes on the drive are a health and safety hazard! No more is being spent on the upkeep - why not??
If someone falls and breaks a leg due to the potholes it will cost you a lot more if you are sued! There is also no secure outside area for residents and families to sit out safely on a nice day. Residents are prisoners because the door has to be kept locked due to 'wanderers'. Why can you not make a safe, secure outside area for residents to be able to walk in and out of at their own accord?

Placing my Nana in full time care was the hardest decision our family ever made and we felt devastated. We worried she may not get the care she needed but I can honestly say that the home exceeded our expectations massively.
All of the staff speak to the residents with dignity and respect and they
are genuinely caring people. The home itself is warm and welcoming if a little dated but I can't stress how much this shouldn't matter - the quality of care is fantastic. To be able to trust a loved one's welfare with other people is extremely difficult but the home have made it so much easier. I know she is really well cared for.
The carers communicate with us regularly and have really gotten to know my Nana; what she likes, what she dislikes, how best to care for her.
She is always well presented, they liaise with GP/health professionals when needed and have been good at advising us. Whenever we go, the staff always speak with us, update us and offer us a drink.
I would recommend to anyone.

My mother went into Pilling House in December 2016 after no longer being safe to live alone at home. The care she received at Pilling House was excellent. The staff are first class. The residents are all happy and well cared for, and this is very apparent when you visit. Mum's health improved when she
moved there. She gained weight and became more of her happy old self. The residents are well motivated by visitors to the home eg. keep fit and by the staff. Sadly mum passed away in May and we couldn't thank the home enough for their kindness, care, love and attention and can not recommend them highly enough. Thank you to you all.

Entry to the care home is always answered by a member of staff, always welcome and cheerful.
A happy environment and staff include residents with their own outdoor experiences, it's fun and includes games, quizzes, information of day to day media and TV.
Visitors are offered a drink of choice and
if given a day's notice will arrange a meal with their friend.
It's a very happy place, the staff are excellent and listen to residents' problems, ideas and views.

My beloved mother died in April 2018, having been a resident at Pilling House since June 2012. After a fall, and given that I was about to make a lengthy work trip abroad, my mother went into Pilling House on the recommendation of her social worker.
When I visited, it didn't have the ensuite bathroom
that I'd envisaged, but it was clean and the staff were evidently engaged with those that they were caring for.
I came to understand that the ensuite bathroom didn't matter. What mattered was the care and attention that the staff provided. I can only praise the team of carers who have looked after my mother for the past six years, who became her friends, and in whom I felt secure in placing my trust for her welfare.
The demise inherent in dementia is so awful, and the team at Pilling didn't just care for my mother but also for me, talking through every element of her care and the choices that had to be made. I cannot review the care provided by the team at Pilling positively enough.

Right from my first phone call, the staff here have been really helpful and friendly. The process of getting my mum into care was explained fully and in a professional manner. I am really happy with the level of care provided and the friendliness of the staff and residents!

Mum initially went into Longroyds for Respite and stayed as a permanent resident. Mum's health and well being greatly improved, she has other people to talk to, has a laugh and a joke, a far cry from when she was at home having Home Care four times a day, myself and family supporting mum on a daily
basis. Mum was becoming severely depressed, lonely and more confused and it was becoming increasingly difficult to support her at home and ensure her safety.

We looked at many different Care Homes, but as soon as we visited Longroyds, we knew it was the right place for mum. The staff were very welcoming, the Home felt comfortable, relaxed and very homely, nothing pretentious about it at all. I now feel I've got my mum back, she has settled well, I know she is safe and above all, very well cared for - many thanks to all at Longroyds .

My mother is 93 and approaching the end of her life. She has been living at Pilling House now for 7 years during which time she has had excellent care from the staff who have proved to be both friendly and efficient in addition to respecting her dignity. The home has a pleasant atmosphere and a calm
feeling throughout. Residents appear very settled and content. Pilling House has three lounges for residents to use which gives them plenty of choice as well as space and the pleasant dining room overlooking the beautiful and carefully maintained grounds, is bright and cheerful. The residents' diet is varied and adjusted to their needs. A regular buffet tea is well received and birthday cakes always appear to mark the resident's special day. The appointment of an Activities Manager is an added bonus and an interesting programme of activities plus seasonal celebrations e.g. Christmas and Halloween are well respected together with annual summer fair. An excellent care home.

My father entered into care on January 4th this year, up to now we as a family are very happy with the care he's received. On day one he was agitated, upset and underweight. Within a week or so he was settled and content. The staff are friendly, helpful and never too busy to discuss any concerns. The
home manager reassured me time over that dad would be well cared for, he is. It's not a 'bells and whistles' place but it's homely and secure.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.435)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.435) out of 10 for Longroyds & Pilling House Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.670 for Longroyds & Pilling House Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (73 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 106 Ratings = 4.67

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.765 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Longroyds & Pilling House Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.865

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
