Welcome to The Hawthornes Care Home, located in Birkenshaw a small village located between Bradford and Leeds. Birkenshaw’s well-kept and elevated position ensures surprisingly green views and is easily accessible from the M62 and within easy reach of shops, amenities and public transport.
Each of the 40 ensuite single bedrooms is furnished to a high standard offering residents the chance to enjoy comfort and tranquillity.

At The Hawthornes, providing independence and choice is very important where residents are encouraged to personalise rooms with their own belongings to help them feel at home.
The Hawthornes benefits from pleasant gardens, offering a peaceful and secure environment in which to enjoy the outdoors.

All Highgate Care residents are supported to live an active and fulfilled life. The person-centred care ethos puts health and wellbeing central to everything providing a truly holistic care experience.
The facilities at The Hawthornes allow residents to enjoy other everyday routines that promote independence, from using the communal lounges and activities space, enjoying the gardens or catching up with friends in the dining area.


The Hawthornes has a busy activities timetable, built around the key goals of mental stimulation, increased mobility and social engagement. Activities include arts and crafts sessions, gardening, exercise classes, cinema nights, quizzes, musical performances, and pamper sessions. Each activity is designed to enhance life skills and give a feeling of purpose and self-worth. There will be a great variety of activities to try, with new activities added frequently.

The in-house chefs will prepare exceptional food from fresh, seasonal produce that’s locally sourced where possible. Menus will include a mix of delicious and nutritious options including traditional classic meals, Residents’ favourites and exciting international cuisine.

From the first time I walked into The Hawthornes, I knew my mum would be well cared for. Mum was in for respite and during her two weeks, I saw a real positive change in her. All the staff were caring and kind and treated my mum with such dignity. I can't praise them all enough.

I don't know how to thank the staff at The Hawthorns enough for their care shown to my sister-in-law, 100% care, kindness, constantly given during COVID times, always doing and saying the right thing at the right time. The home is spotless, the home is very well managed. I wouldn't have been able to
care for her any better than they have. Sadly she passed away on 29th August. We will be eternally grateful for the excellent care. Thank you.

My father moved into The Hawthornes on 24th December 2022, even though it was a difficult time to leave his home, he seemed happy and content the minute he arrived, thanks to the homely and friendly atmosphere they create at The Hawthornes. All staff are pleasant and caring and a few staff go above
and beyond in the love and care they give to their residents. The atmosphere always felt free and easy and residents felt comfortable moving around and making their own choices. Thank you to all staff.

The shower is the most horrendous thing I have ever come across. You sit on a commode in a flood of water. There's no place to put clothes etc. It is just awful, quite frightening people come in to use the loo! Food could be quite a bit better, quite a lot actually. I think £950 a week for lemon curd
sandwiches is a bit naughty. Fortunately, the staff are very kind, willing and helpful.

How and where to begin to describe the kindness and loving care my late Wife received at The Hawthornes? The Staff looked after her for a year and a day when I could no longer give her the care she needed, the hardest decision I ever made but in all that time, she never stopped laughing/smiling/and
responding positively, behaviour, which, I'm told is rare in a Dementia/Alzheimers sufferer. I visited every day and latterly, enjoyed meals too and I was always included in the celebrations and events, parties and more. I am convinced that the care she received helped maintain and sustain her during her long and hard battle and it certainly gave me strength too. I will never forget The Management and all the Staff, Day and Night, and they will always be in my heart and thoughts.

I have put my mum in The Hawthornes care home after a bad experience in another one and even though it’s only been two weeks I can safely say the difference is unbelievable.
Not just for mum but for our family, they have welcomed us with open arms and embraced mum.
I have met all the staff and all
of them are brilliant.
Mum has a smile on her face these days and with living with vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s that’s not easy.
All I wanted for mum was to give her a bit of kindness and attention and she has that in The Hawthornes.
Always have the time of day for the families and the residents which means everything to us.
Thank you for putting my mind at ease knowing mum is being treated with respect and is safe and well and looked after.

Mum really enjoyed her stay and didn't have a bad word to say about any of the staff who were excellent with her throughout her stay.
She definitely wouldn't hesitate about staying again when needed.

My grandma had been living at The Hawthornes for the final few months of her life and whilst dementia meant that she often did not know where she was, the care and support she received made her feel at ease and at home. Thank you for all of your attentive care and for always going the extra mile to

Very impressed with the care and support given to my mum and our family. Mum settled in quickly and her quality of life improved greatly. From being bedbound for nine months, she was encouraged to walk with the aid of a walker and regain her dignity.

When my mum was taken back to the care home from Huddersfield Royal Hospital, she was on end-of-life care. The staff were incredible, doing everything they could to make her last hours as comfortable as possible.

Sorry to say this will be my final review as my mother passed away, but up until that day, management and all the team gave her all the care, and emotional support for us and have towards my mother, for which I will be eternally grateful. Mum was at The Hawthornes after a spell in hospital and we did not know of them before this. I cannot express how great they have been. They were very helpful with Mum and her needs after hospital and she had a great time living there. The staff were all lovely with her and the phone was always answered
quickly, when I was in touch. Mum was very happy with the food and often managed to get an extra dinner when she was hungry later at night! We were given a welcome pack, which I note was in a previous comment, and this gave lots of information about activities and food. We had a number of medical issues with Mum and the staff dealt with this great, as they happened. We had a couple of bug issues due to the hot weather at the time and these were dealt with immediately, just one of those things the home had little control over.

Warm welcome. All the staff are very pleasant, lovely calming place. Dad is settling in well. The senior carer is amazing with Dad and family keeping us all informed and updated. Spotlessly clean.

Generally, a very good experience. I feel it would be better if a welcome pack was available as I found out how things work, a bit at a time. Some staff are excellent and others could do with some support or more supervision. They can be very short of staff on occasions. Mum is looked after well and
the staff are very kind, when there. The phone is answered quickly and information is passed on in a timely way. The decor is getting tired in some of the areas.

Happy, kind staff. Made Mum feel very comfortable. The covid outbreak was handled with efficiency. All family members were treated with sympathy and generosity when our mum sadly passed away. The kindness of all the staff was very much appreciated, thank you. (Only complaint - no ashtray outside!)

My father was in The Hawthornes and because he became more frail (mentally) it was best for him to be placed in a nursing home, we as a family were very upset and the staff in The Hawthornes went above and beyond to keep my father in The Hawthornes. He, with all their help and support was able to stay
there! It's like a real home and the staff treat the residents and their family like their own families.

I have over 30yrs experience in Social care with the last 17 years as a registered manager.


I achieved the Registered manager's award, NVQ level 2
I have previously held the positions of Deputy manager and Care assistant.


I am continually working to improve standards and aim to achieve a better CQC rating for our home, additionally, I aim to build on our community presence and increase our reputation and recommendations.


I have worked in care since I was 17 years old and have seen so many changes over the years but the only thing that has not changed is to believe to treat people with dignity, respect and compassion. This includes Residents, staff, families and friends, I have an open and transparent relationship with all, and my door is always open. I mentor my staff to listen to our residents so we can engage them and help give them the best.


I love to spend my spare time with my Granddaughter, I like reading, cooking and the odd shopping trip.
