Welcome to The Hawthornes Care Home, located in Birkenshaw a small village located between Bradford and Leeds. Birkenshaw’s well-kept and elevated position ensures surprisingly green views and is easily accessible from the M62 and within easy reach of shops, amenities and public transport.
Each of the 40 ensuite single bedrooms is furnished to a high standard offering residents the chance to enjoy comfort and tranquillity.

At The Hawthornes, providing independence and choice is very important where residents are encouraged to personalise rooms with their own belongings to help them feel at home.
The Hawthornes benefits from pleasant gardens, offering a peaceful and secure environment in which to enjoy the outdoors.

All Highgate Care residents are supported to live an active and fulfilled life. The person-centred care ethos puts health and wellbeing central to everything providing a truly holistic care experience.
The facilities at The Hawthornes allow residents to enjoy other everyday routines that promote independence, from using the communal lounges and activities space, enjoying the gardens or catching up with friends in the dining area.


The Hawthornes has a busy activities timetable, built around the key goals of mental stimulation, increased mobility and social engagement. Activities include arts and crafts sessions, gardening, exercise classes, cinema nights, quizzes, musical performances, and pamper sessions. Each activity is designed to enhance life skills and give a feeling of purpose and self-worth. There will be a great variety of activities to try, with new activities added frequently.

The in-house chefs will prepare exceptional food from fresh, seasonal produce that’s locally sourced where possible. Menus will include a mix of delicious and nutritious options including traditional classic meals, Residents’ favourites and exciting international cuisine.

Whilst I have only been here three weeks (three weeks still to go), I have been entirely satisfied with the care provided. The staff have been very helpful and have treated me with respect. I was very pleased that there is a hairdresser here. If I had to have care home help again, I would certainly
choose to come here. Finally, I was satisfied that the management helped and sorted out problems with hospital appointments for me.

I cannot comment on activities as Mum was always in her bedroom. Sadly, Mum passed away on 23rd August. The staff were marvellous at the end. So dignified and very supportive.

The Hawthornes' team have been looking after my mum since February of this year and I couldn't be more happy and content with the care that she is receiving. There is clearly a very high degree of care and affection shown towards my mum by all the team who look after her. In turn, it is also obvious
to all who can see her interaction with the carers, that my mum returns that affection in spades. I am grateful to the Hawthornes team for ensuring my mum's twilight years are not only comfortable but full of kind and caring compassion. Thank you all.

My mother-in-law went for emergency respite care, and staff went above and beyond to support her, and us, as a family in a difficult situation whilst in the middle of a pandemic. We can’t thank the manager enough for her support at that time, even helping us on her day off. The kindness shown was wonderful
and reassuring, and they proved that it isn’t just a job to them, it’s a vocation.

Through lockdown my mum has been quite adamant with staff that all she wants is to see her family. You would like to think that the home would communicate with families as to when window/garden visits have been allowed, especially if they have residents that are desperate to see loved ones, and they
know by seeing us this helps them feel happy, loved and not forgotten. We have had nothing in the last 12 months to advise when visits were available, we have only found out through default when dropping off items for Mum at the home.
As a family, we have tried to arrange regular Skype calls but each time, there was an excuse why they couldn't do it that day.
On my latest telephone call from the home to help calm Mum, I was on loud speaker and heard a senior member of staff shouting to Mum "You see, I told you we were in lockdown and you didn't believe me did you!" Not helpful when your mum is upset and you are trying to calm her down.
Most staff are amazing, unfortunately, a few do bring concerns.

The Hawthornes have been fantastic at looking after my mum for the last 3-4 years. The staff have always been very caring, professional, sensitive and understanding of mum's needs and shown great dignity in all their dealings with her.
My mum particularly enjoys the food and the entertainment provided
at the home. Despite her dementia, my mum has not lost her humour or zest for life.

I have over 30yrs experience in Social care with the last 17 years as a registered manager.


I achieved the Registered manager's award, NVQ level 2
I have previously held the positions of Deputy manager and Care assistant.


I am continually working to improve standards and aim to achieve a better CQC rating for our home, additionally, I aim to build on our community presence and increase our reputation and recommendations.


I have worked in care since I was 17 years old and have seen so many changes over the years but the only thing that has not changed is to believe to treat people with dignity, respect and compassion. This includes Residents, staff, families and friends, I have an open and transparent relationship with all, and my door is always open. I mentor my staff to listen to our residents so we can engage them and help give them the best.


I love to spend my spare time with my Granddaughter, I like reading, cooking and the odd shopping trip.
