Welcome to The Hawthornes Care Home, located in Birkenshaw a small village located between Bradford and Leeds. Birkenshaw’s well-kept and elevated position ensures surprisingly green views and is easily accessible from the M62 and within easy reach of shops, amenities and public transport.
Each of the 40 ensuite single bedrooms is furnished to a high standard offering residents the chance to enjoy comfort and tranquillity.

At The Hawthornes, providing independence and choice is very important where residents are encouraged to personalise rooms with their own belongings to help them feel at home.
The Hawthornes benefits from pleasant gardens, offering a peaceful and secure environment in which to enjoy the outdoors.

The facilities at The Hawthornes allow residents to enjoy other everyday routines that promote independence, from using the communal lounges and activities space, enjoying the gardens or catching up with friends in the dining area.


The Hawthornes has a busy activities timetable, built around the key goals of mental stimulation, increased mobility and social engagement. Activities include arts and crafts sessions, gardening, exercise classes, cinema nights, quizzes, musical performances, and pamper sessions. Each activity is designed to enhance life skills and give a feeling of purpose and self-worth. There will be a great variety of activities to try, with new activities added frequently.

The in-house chefs will prepare exceptional food from fresh, seasonal produce that’s locally sourced where possible. Menus will include a mix of delicious and nutritious options including traditional classic meals, Residents’ favourites and exciting international cuisine.

With the coronavirus pandemic making visiting Mum impossible, we feel reassured that all the lovely staff are taking good care of Mum. We have had window visits, and Mum looks happy and well.

We are very happy with the care our mum receives at The Hawthornes. The staff are kind, caring and lovely to Mum and to us as her family. Recent Covid-19 issues have made contact difficult. Using Skype is difficult and outdoor visits subject to decent weather.

My mother has been a resident at The Hawthornes for one year. The care she has received has been consistently very good. The people who work there take the time to make the residents feel at home in a clean, comfortable and nurturing environment. My mother is very content there and has a good rapport
with all of the staff. I would not hesitate to recommend The Hawthornes to any family who are looking for a safe and caring home for a loved one.

My husband and I have recently had two spells of respite at The Hawthornes. My husband had a stroke eighteen months ago which affected his sight and balance and I became his carer.
In January this year, I became ill and had to go to hospital. Our family do not live locally. After a month in hospital,
they decided we needed respite and arranged for us to come to The Hawthornes, where we were made very welcome and stayed for a few weeks. On returning home, I have to return to hospital for a pacemaker to be fitted. My husband returned to The Hawthornes where the staff looked after him. They were wonderful.

After being transferred from another care home at our request, the level of care, service and overall friendliness from all the staff at Hawthornes has made Mum's transition go smoothly and as she suffers from dementia the support she has been given is commendable. Comparing the 2 care homes sets The
Hawthornes in a much higher category. I cannot give enough praise to all the staff and management on their attitude and care to each resident. The variety of activities is excellent and the weekly visits from the local nursery children is one of the highlights of the week. The standard of food is brilliant with a choice of menus and my Mum always leaves an empty plate. If you are looking for a high standard of care in a cosy and happy environment you will not be disappointed. As you can see I have marked all areas of The Hawthornes as Excellent except for the Rooms and I marked this as Good as although they have en-suite facilities (toilet & sink) they do not have their own shower or bath.

The first thing that strikes is the bright roomy pleasant entrance hall, and all the rest of the home is clean and comfortable. The carers are willing to do whatever they can but the shortage of staff means that they are often stretched beyond their limit. They are pleasant, caring and will do whatever
they can to help. I was on the first floor and the kitchen facilities there are awful. The worktop space is minute and I don't know how the staff cope with dishing food out. There is no boiler provided for tea making. For a residential home, there are several dementia residents and some in bed needing more attention.

My father, who was 95 when admitted, has been a resident at The Hawthornes since December 2017 and he was very weak weighing only 9st 6lbs, having just come out of hospital after several falls, which to a family was very worrying not being able to leave him for any length of time.
His appearance was
that of a 95 year, old very frail and not looking forward to going in a home.
This month, only 9 months later, I’m glad to say he’s now 10st 7lbs and looking like an 80-year-old.
All this transformation brought about in no small part by the carers at this quite magnificent home.
Although he is chair bound, this doesn’t stop him from going downstairs to see the singers or take part in activities of which there are many.
Also, due to daily baths or bathroom care, he’s a different person enjoying monthly haircuts and visits from the opticians. He now rarely has to see a doctor and is now looking forward to Xmas 2018 and in January he’ll be 97 so to all at The Hawthornes, pat yourself on the back well done.

Always a very welcoming feel when visiting. Very clean, warm and tastefully decorated rooms and other areas. Residents seem happy, well cared for and have many activities during the week to occupy them.
Staff are very approachable, helpful and always seem to be very busy attending to residents needs.
My mother in law seems to be much happier and far better cared for since moving here, compared to her latter years spent living alone with only daily carers popping in for short periods.

My mum has been in the home since March 2017, in my opinion, she has been treated very well. The staff always appear to be helpful and treat mum with respect and dignity. I think the staff show great patience in treating the residents in a good manner, not something I am sure I could do it is a vocation
to work in this environment.

I have over 30yrs experience in Social care with the last 17 years as a registered manager.


I achieved the Registered manager's award, NVQ level 2
I have previously held the positions of Deputy manager and Care assistant.


I am continually working to improve standards and aim to achieve a better CQC rating for our home, additionally, I aim to build on our community presence and increase our reputation and recommendations.


I have worked in care since I was 17 years old and have seen so many changes over the years but the only thing that has not changed is to believe to treat people with dignity, respect and compassion. This includes Residents, staff, families and friends, I have an open and transparent relationship with all, and my door is always open. I mentor my staff to listen to our residents so we can engage them and help give them the best.


I love to spend my spare time with my Granddaughter, I like reading, cooking and the odd shopping trip.
