As I have only recently been able to visit my mother again after lockdown, this review can only relate to the time before then.
My mother was assisted by myself, my sister and carers 4 times a day before moving to residential care. I have found the staff, for the most part, to be caring and aware of
my mother's needs. The food is excellent and Mum's en-suite room comfortable, containing many personal possessions. I regret that due to lack of time and staff, my mother was not able to retain her ability to walk short distances.

Mum seems to be very well cared for. The staff are friendly, helpful and approachable. She has a good choice of food although her appetite is not what it was. She gets prompt medical help when needed.

Both my mother and father have been resident in The Sycamores for around 3 years. The care they have received in that time has been fantastic. My sister and I live overseas and it brings great comfort to us to know Mum and Dad have been looked after when they have been unable to look after themselves.
Mum recently passed on and the way The Sycamores handled it could not have been better. I am very grateful to the staff for all they do to care for Mum and Dad.

My mum has been a resident for 12 months, during that extremely upsetting time the staff have been there for both my mum and myself. They have helped my mum to settle although this is an ongoing day to day battle. The home is a very friendly place, the food looks really nice and my mum enjoys her meals.
The home has recently been decorated although ti was homely before even more so now. I have been supported fully throughout this year and I know when I leave mum she is safe.

Welcomed by the admin lady who was very helpful and friendly. Kitchens were spotless and my mother, who can be picky, said the food was excellent. Her room at the rear of the building was dark, but that is luck of the draw. All in all the staff were friendly and helpful.

I and 2 other people visited a friend of ours who is a resident at The Sycamores. As we entered through the main door there was a strong smell of cat urine and also on the main corridor. I mentioned this to a male member of staff, he said no one had complained about this before and his attitude was
quite arrogant. He asked a female member of staff if she could smell anything and she said she couldn't. I said he was obviously becoming very complacent. When I mentioned this to my friend who is a resident, she said a cat came into her bedroom. As I walked back along the corridor there were 2 dishes of pet food behind a door. I was not very happy with the male member of staff's attitude. Clearly, the cat is not properly house trained. This is not hygienic for the residents. The carpet in the entrance and the main corridor needs steam cleaning.

My father was a resident at Sycamores for the past 10 months and was very well cared for, I cannot thank the staff enough for being so kind to my dad and to me .
I would recommend the home to anyone who finds themselves in need of care .

Steve Hague

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2015

Steve Hague has been the Home Manager at The Sycamores for eight years. His ‘can-do’ attitude is appreciated by social services and local discharge teams; who know they can ring Steve and he will attempt to make space for a new resident, no matter what time of the day or week.


Steve operates a tight ship and is regularly full, due to the reputation he has created.


“We have activities running every day and encourage all residents to get involved and to socialise.


Steve’s personal hobbies include one of his lesser-known skills fly fishing and he spends many hours fly tying.
The Care Team at The Sycamores strives to deliver the highest levels of care to our residents.


Our trained, experienced and compassionate Care Team will devise a bespoke care plan so you can rest assured your loved one will receive the best possible care.

Sandra Ambler

Job Title: Administrator

Joined: 2015

Sandra Ambler has worked at The Sycamores for six years.


She is the first friendly face you see when you visit the Wakefield care home.


The Sycamores is a busy care home, and the admin side is dealt with efficiently and quickly by Sandra, who enjoys her job. Every resident and family member will talk to Sandra at some point, who attempts to organise and sort out any issues, quickly.


Sandra is so appreciated that she recently won the Burlington Care Award for Support Staff of the Year, and it's clear that she deserved it.


Sandra loves her job and enjoys the fact that every day is different.


Outside work, Sandra is a keen baker and cake decorator and is regularly booked up by family and close friends. These works of art are beautiful and a world away from admin!


Daniel

Daniel Collins

Job Title: Senior Carer

Joined: 2016

Daniel joined Social Care straight from College aged 16 working within the kitchens and housekeeping .
Aged 18 Daniel was offered a position within the Care team and has grown within the role to position of Senior Carer. A position he has held for the last 2.5 yrs
Daniel's ultimate goal is Nursing and he is studying towards his Nursing qualifications.
Daniel believes that Caring for the older generation is a vocation and not just a job and loves being part of the Sycamores family where residents and colleagues all support each other , "Its like being part of an extended family ".
