Poor quality of care, lack of training, inadequate management. The worst mistake we ever made! My Mum died without dignity due to their complete lack of care or empathy. Removed my father from their care to a much safer home.

Orchard Court care home is not fit for purpose, the management structure is totally inadequate and incompetent.
The care staff are poorly trained and seem oblivious to medical problems when they arise.
My mother suffered a catastrophic event and was non-responsive, the head carer on duty that day
didn't even recognise that my mother was in cardiac failure. My mother died that same day without dignity and there was no empathy shown by any of the staff at all.
My father was removed from Orchard Court shortly after my mother's death for his own safety and now resides at a remarkable home that shows care and compassion.

Reply from Jo Barnett, Manager at Orchard Court Residential Care Home

All the team at Orchard Court would like to offer you our deepest condolences at this sad time.
We understand how traumatic it can be to lose a loved one and how difficult palliative/end-of-life care can be for families.

My mother has been in Orchard Court for over a year now. She has complex health needs (vascular dementia). The care she has received has been second to none.
Mum considers the staff as her family. The care she receives is simply outstanding. If there are any problems, I am contacted straight away
whether it’s about medication, a GP visit or if Mum has any issues.
Visiting is easy and covid safe and the staff are always welcoming. The care they show to all the residents is amazing. They are warm and compassionate.
I feel mum has blossomed at Orchard Court. She is happy and content. The manager made her welcome from the outset and nothing is too much trouble.
The Staff are great with mum often mentioning names (which amazes me because usually she can’t remember names) and the list goes on. I am in awe of the patience and caring attitude demonstrated by all the staff. The food is excellent and the place is always spotless.

Mum was taken to Orchard Court after a stay in hospital and in a covid unit. So lost mobility, and was unable to return home. The staff and manager in the home went above and beyond and got mum walking again. The staff were always happy to help. When I rang up I was able to speak to mum. Due to covid
visiting was restricted. But were still able to visit.
Mum has never spent time in residential and has Alzheimer's, so somewhere different was confusing for her. But the staff were brilliant with her.
Will definitely be taking mum back for a break.
Would recommend this care home.

Difficult to state, based on our experience, how inadequate Orchard Court is. If you're looking for a poor-quality residential home in which to place your loved one, and that person is still reasonably capable of ensuring their own care and wellbeing, then it would probably suffice. However, as soon
as additional care and support are required, the staff and management of Orchard Court soon failed on almost all counts, seemed very much to be out of their depth, and repeatedly failed to follow even the most basic instructions provided by either a GP, health visitors or the family. The premises seemed to be quite clean and tidy, and I'm told the food was lovely, but the place seems woefully understaffed, and the priority for the majority of those staff which we encountered was to offload any problems onto somebody else at the earliest opportunity. We feel massively let down by Orchard Court and they undoubtedly made a very difficult period for our family even more traumatic and upsetting.

Mum lived at Orchard Court for the last 15 months of her life and before then stayed a number of times whilst on respite care. She was well looked after. In her last months, she needed more support and the carers were quick to respond. The home has a number of restrooms and it was always possible to
find a quiet corner for a chat. Mum always had a healthy appetite, and whilst I never ate there, there were very appetising smells coming from the kitchen.
The place is kept very clean and is in a very quiet residential area. Whilst the gardens are not extensive, there are places to sit out.

My mother had to go in for respite care, following my father's dementia diagnosis. The staff were very attentive and made great efforts to understand her condition and mental state, adapting their approach all the while to build trust and confidence. They ensured she had newly refurbished and spacious
accommodation and are excellent at communicating with me about developments. The home feels more like a hotel on entry than a care home, which is credit to the management team. Mother has been safe, well fed and treated with dignity and respect throughout a very difficult period in her life. I would not hesitate to recommend Orchard Court to others.

Thank you for all the help you have given over the last 4 months of my Mum's life. We found that you cared very diligently for her, always looking to encourage her to do as much as she could.
You supported the whole family when we needed it, making it a welcoming place to come and be with Mum. The
words that spring to mind when we think of the home are:
Caring, individual friendliness of all the team, human, airy and comfortable.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 1.167 for Orchard Court Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (21 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 24 Ratings = 1.167

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 0 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Orchard Court Residential Care Home is based on 0 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

(1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) =

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 43 registered maximum number of service users is 8.6. 0 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.6 = 0

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
