Saint Cecilia’s is an award-winning independent, privately-owned Scarborough care home providing professional, compassionate care for people with dementia, in a friendly and welcoming environment.

They are more than just a Scarborough care home, and strive to make it a home for residents; a place where they can retain independence and personal freedom and live their lives with enjoyment and fulfilment.

Staff aim to treat all residents as they would wish to be treated themselves and believe that, while dementia or confusion might mean they can no longer live alone it should not mean any loss of privacy, dignity or respect.

The owners and management have many years’ experience of providing expert care to older and vulnerable people in a homely, family atmosphere. Everything is geared towards ensuring that care home’s residents are happy and the overall aim is to provide dedicated, personal care, tailored to individual needs.

Full support is given to friends and relatives including the opportunity to visit at any time.

I visit my friend who lives here usually weekly. The carers are always welcoming and happy to help. The patience and the way they look after residents who are often in distress are second to none. They all do an amazing job - the manager is around and involved in activities in and out of the home and
is always happy to help or answer any questions.

This is the third home where my husband has been a resident since his dementia worsened and it is so much better than the previous ones. At last I a free from worry about his well-being in the hands of the best staff imaginable in every respect. Equally, the management is of the highest standard. This
is a real 'home from home' and my husband is as safe and content as he possibly can be.

My mum has now been a resident for almost three months. During each of my visits, I have found the staff to be very engaging with the residents. All staff have been helpful and kind to myself and to other relatives who have visited Mum. Nothing has been too much trouble and the staff are proactive at
keeping me informed how Mum is. She has had a wonderful smile on her face on the outings she has been on, which is very reassuring for me.

Thank you for your lovely review, it is so wonderful to see that our staff team are making a real difference to the lives of our residents, we are very proud of the quality of care they give each day. I am sure your mum's smile is as priceless to you as it is to us. Thank You.

It’s never easy for family members to take the decision that a loved one needs the extra help and security that a care home brings. Mum joined the St Cecilia’s family in February 2023 and since that very first difficult day, I have been impressed and humbled by the staff’s care, thoughtfulness and professionalism.
They constantly strive to make life as best as it can be for all the residents, always treating them as individuals and finding just the right activity to brighten up their day. The home and residents are always spotless, huge credit to those who maintain that momentous task. Meals look and smell both delicious and nutritious, and fussier tastes catered for (birthday cakes are fabulous!) The managing and admin staff are thoughtful, approachable and communicate well. The staff are always happy, welcoming and accommodating whenever I visit, alone or with younger family members. I’m so grateful and pleased to have St Cecilia’s to help me as we navigate Mum’s dementia journey.

Reply from Mike Higginson, Operations Manager at Saint Cecilia's Care Home

Dear Kate, you are correct it is an incredibly difficult journey to be on with a loved one who needs extra help and care. We are so grateful for your review, as we are for our staff and management team at Saint Cecilia's Care Home. Taking the time and effort to say thanks and give credit as you have done here makes it all worth while for us all - Thank You.

The first time one enters the building the kind welcome from staff soothes and settles visitors immediately. The homely atmosphere, where every possible comfort is available, makes family members happy to know that all is safe and well for their family loved one. A wide range of amazing activities brings
smiles and joy to so many residents. It's wonderful to see their responses to seeing and stroking animals and birds, enjoying marvellous singalongs and getting out in the community to take part in well-planned visits. The cooking staff/chefs create some delicious meals also, which are very amendable and nutritious. Finally, such caring staff offer kindness and respect to all resident. Each deserving medals for aptitude and care! Great. Thank you all. You're all a pleasure to be with.

A perfect example of how a care home should be, the care and support both my friend and I received were exceptional. Each time I visited, it was unannounced, and each time, the staff were friendly and welcoming. The communication was excellent. The residents are so happy in their home environment with
so many activities going on. The home is always spotlessly clean and free from odour. Sadly, my friend recently passed away; he received exceptional care with dignity until the end. I will miss the staff and residents; they have become 'friends'. Keep up the outstanding work St Cecilia',s and thank you for everything; I feel so lucky to have chosen you.

I visit the care home often and at varying times of the day and evening. Staff are always friendly, bubbly and helpful. The staff have brilliant relationships with my friend, who is living at the home, as well as with others, which is evident each time I visit. My friend is supported to engage in activities
that suit her. Whether that be out shopping on a one-to-one basis or with regular trips out of the home with the home's minibus. I have only good things to say about Saint Cecilia's and the happiness they bring to people's lives.

Reply from Mike Higginson, Operations Manager at Saint Cecilia's Care Home

Dear Christine, thank you for your amazing review; we are so pleased your experience of Saint Cecilia's Care Home is so positive. The engagement through activities and our true 'social' care ethos we feel are amongst the best in the area, and we are very proud of our manager and team at the care home.

My father has been in care since his diagnosis of vascular dementia over 8-years ago. He has stayed in three care homes, and so I have experience of care settings from this and can say that since moving to St Cecilias late last year, we have never been happier with the care afforded to Dad. He was in
a much more restrictive environment prior to this, and as a result, his quality of life was very poor. Since moving in, he has changed in every way that had been of concern to us before. His standard of personal hygiene is literally 1000% improved, where previously he would go for weeks without a shower or bath, he gets one or two weekly now and quite happily despite the effects of his condition and he is regaining lost fitness because he is using stairs again after several years on the same floor.
The staff are excellent. I am in no doubt that he is getting the best level of care and communication with the team is easy. Never once have I been unable to speak to someone about Dad.

Staff excellent, very friendly and informative on arrival.
Since moving into the home, his health has improved, personal hygiene has improved, and most importantly, his mental health - he is happier than he has been in a long time!
Management presence during visits, answered any questions, very helpful
and knowledgeable of my family member.
The home was lovely, nice environment, nice music playing.
Would recommend.

From initial viewings, moving in and now to being a resident and the family of a resident, I highly recommend St Cecilia's Care Home. The care is so person-centred and the staff truly care and embody all the values that the organisation promotes - safety, care and putting the person at the heart of
everything they do. They have taken, and continue to take, such care and concern for our family member, getting to know her as an individual and understanding her dementia needs, what will make her happy and what could agitate her more. They treat all residents with the care and dignity they deserve! All staff management, carers, catering, housekeepers and maintenance have always been friendly, understanding and support us as a family too. The transition for someone to move into care is a very difficult and upsetting time and the St Cecilia's Group and Care Home have made us feel supported and cared for throughout. We have no hesitation in recommending their services.

On the whole, the home is well run. The residents seem happy and all the staff are supportive. The staff listen to concerns and act accordingly. Regular meetings are held where family members can air their views and bring up any problems or anxieties they have.

For 2 1/2 years, my relative was resident in Saint Cecilia's Care Home where he was cared for very well by all staff who also extended support to his next of kin. All of which I fully commend. Sadly he was hospitalised for necessary treatment of physical ailments and was unable to return to the home
as additional nursing care was not able to be catered for at the recently acquired nursing home I found this hard to understand when he was a long-standing resident. After an enforced hospital stay he is now 45 miles from Scarborough.

Reply from Aaron Padgham, Director at Saint Cecilia's Care Home

Thank you very much for your positive review. As you will know we have been able to secure accommodation at our Nursing Home for your relative and he has now returned to Scarborough. He has been back with us a while now and has settled in. We have worked hard to make this happen and we are delighted with the outcome!

Every care and attention was given to my husband during his respite stay. All the staff were really caring and went out of their way to make me welcome on my visits.
Through all the attention, he has made wonderful progress and I can only reiterate by saying if he ever needed care again, I would not
hesitate to book him into Saint Cecilia's. Many thanks

My mother has lived at St Cecilia's Care Home since April 2016. She is in the advanced stages of dementia. When she first arrived she wanted to leave but the staff were kind and patient and eventually, she settled down.
Most of the staff have been there a long time and the new ones are just as kind
and caring.
I like the way everything is homely.
Beautiful gardens for the residents to use and easily accessible. A well-run place that gives the family peace of mind.

Mum moved to Saint Cecilia's last September after visiting for daycare two days a week. She had got to the point when she needed additional support.

After mum and myself got used to the home and staff for a few months of daycare, we found the transition to full time care the perfect option. Mum

has a great room overlooking the main road, it's like a mini flat, bedroom and sitting room. The room has some of her own furniture, to instil a familiar environment.

She enjoys the living space and company of the other residents now and calls it home. We treat it as her home and constantly calling and going out for short day trips and outings.

We have a close contact with the staff and management regarding mums care and support. Constantly making adjustments to her physical and emotional needs.
Mum is treated with dignity and respect, even though her Alzheimer’s condition is moderate but severe at times.

Highly recommend this care home, warm and welcoming staff.

Current Review Score: 9.6 (9.552)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.6 (9.552) out of 10 for Saint Cecilia's Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.852 for Saint Cecilia's Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (69 Excellents x 5) + (12 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 81 Ratings = 4.852

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Saint Cecilia's Care Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 21 registered maximum number of service users is 4.2, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Happy residents, happy staff and a happy home have long been Saint Cecilia’s motto and nobody better embodies that than Care Home Deputy Manager Steph Harbron.

After working in other care settings, Steph joined Saint Cecilia’s in 2017, attracted by the home’s warm, homely atmosphere. She joined as a Care Assistant and worked her way up to become deputy manager, in 2021.
She combines managing the day to day running of the home with shifts as a carer as she loves spending time with and getting to know the residents.

“I’m not a manager who sits in his or her office all day, I like to be involved, making sure everything is getting done properly and our lovely residents are getting the best care we can provide,” she says. “In our home many people have dementia and they have different symptoms, different needs and different likes and dislike. So, it is really important that we get to know each individual really well to ensure the right care is being given. It really is individual, person-centred care and you can only give that by spending quality time with the person, which is what we do here.”

Her own grandad moved into the home last year and Steph adds: “I wouldn’t have done that if I didn’t know we are delivering great care here.”
For her, a good day is when she can go home to her family knowing that she has helped make the residents happy.

“Everybody wants the very best for every resident here and no matter what, if we can make our residents happy and give them a smile, that is what makes care worthwhile.”

Seena Jose is head chef at our Care Home and her food has got some very high-profile fans.
When former politician turned television presenter Ed Balls was filming Inside the Care Crisis with Ed Balls last year, he and the film crew called round to Seena’s home to sample a delicious biriyani.
“He really enjoyed it,” she says. “I was very proud.”
Seena loves her role at the home, where she has worked since 2009.
“Cooking is my passion and I love to make meals that the residents enjoy. Food is a very important part of our residents’ day and it is lovely when you see that they have enjoyed their meal and they tell you it was delicious.”
She cooks what the residents like and ask for, which is mainly classic, familiar favourites. Seena is famous for her traditional Sunday roast. But the first Saturday of every month is Indian food day when the residents get a taste of what Seena likes to cook for her own family and they love it.
Seena used to split her time between shifts as a carer and as a cook but the residents loved her food so much that she became head chef.
She says the secret to providing great care is having a good team of colleagues around you.
“Saint Cecilia’s is very supportive, we all work for the benefit of the residents and help one another,” she says.
