Rooted in the Christian faith, life at Emmaus House supports residents to live fulfilled lives in their later years. Emmaus House provides excellent, personalised care which supports the residents flourish in older age.

Emmaus House has an active social life in which residents can take part, or follow their pursuits. Emmaus House appreciates that each resident has their own individual interests, hobbies and pastimes, and endeavour to support the residents to maintain this important part of their lives.

Residents are encouraged to lead the lifestyle that they choose, doing as much or as little as they want - residents can simply choose to put their feet up with a daily paper or a good book from the homes’ own collection.

The home employs an activities coordinator who is supported by a team of volunteers, providing a range of planned activities or spending time one on one with residents.

The weekly programme includes activities such as armchair exercises, quizzes, crafts, walks in the Valley Gardens, pet therapy, board games, talks and much more. Those who are unable to join the activities are visited in their rooms by volunteers. A hairdresser visits once a week.

As a Christian community, both residents and staff of Emmaus House meet daily for devotional times. There is a Sunday service, monthly communion service and regular hymn singing.

Emmaus House also benefits from the active involvement of supporters from local churches, who not only visit regularly to take devotions, services, prayer meetings, Bible studies and communion services, but also provide pastoral support to the residents and staff.

There are a number of churches of various denominations within easy reach of the home.

We shall also support you to look after the administration and ordering of your medication and liaise with health professionals upon your behalf as appropriate.

My mother has been a resident at Emmaus House for over three years. She took a bit of time to settle in (which is understandable) but has enjoyed her time there. The staff are excellent - so caring and patient. Nothing seems too much trouble.
There are activities during the week and on Sundays, a service
and hymn singing in the afternoon. When she was able, we were able to take her in a wheelchair around the gardens, which are just across the road.
During a recent period of illness, the care shown to my mother has been very good. My sister and I have been allowed to visit and sit with her at any time.
We are very pleased with the service my mother has received from Emmaus House.

My aunt spent the last 6-months of her life at Emmaus House in Harrogate. Part of that time was during ‘lockdown’, and the staff made every effort to ensure that she settled in and coped with the huge transition from living independently to being cared for.


The staff are very hardworking, cheerful

and treated my aunt as an individual with individual needs. Being opposite the Valley Gardens, they encouraged relatives to take their family members out, offering to help with a wheelchair in the first instance. They were excellent in communicating any fluctuations in health and offered emotional support to the family. My aunt died peacefully aged 101 at Emmaus House, with caring and compassionate people around her.

Emmaus House has such a lovely family feel and atmosphere to it. All the staff are very approachable, attentive and friendly! The staff always provide person-centred care to all the residents, and I am very happy with how my granny has been cared for through her time at Emmaus House. The staff have

My mum moved to Emmaus House about a year ago after a stay in hospital and when my dad felt unable to care for her at home. The staff at the home are beyond excellent in every way. My mum is extremely happy there and has decided that she would like to stay there now on a long term basis, as it has become
her home. The staff and other residents have become like a big extended family for my mum and provide a huge amount of support to her. The daily activities up in the lounge keep my mum busy, and there is always someone for her to chat to, so she is never lonely. Now that some of the Covid restrictions have started to lift, she has also been able to sit outside in the front garden in the afternoon summer sun, reading her book and looking out over the valley gardens.
My dad sadly died very recently after being unwell for a period of time. Throughout this time, the staff at Emmaus House have provided a huge amount of moral support for both my mum and our family as a whole.

My great aunt moved in to Emmaus House in 2011 and lived very happy there for 4-years, so when my mum became increasingly immobile, we had no hesitation in moving her into Emmaus House. Mum has been in Emmaus House since Mid-February, initially for respite care, but it soon became very obvious she would
need to stay. Mum very reluctantly moved into a care home, it was not something she ever intended for herself. However, within a few weeks, she is far more settled, the home is a lovely, friendly, welcoming environment. Some of the staff have been there for years and years, a true reflection on the care they give. The staff are always very kind, very helpful, and very caring; they are discreet and confidential. Mum says the food is great; she doesn't eat pudding, she says, but the rhubarb crumble and custard is lovely! Everyone is encouraged to join in with the activities, Mum joins in with exercises in her wheelchair, and everyone is invited and encouraged to eat their lunch and tea together.

My mum has been in Emmaus for 3 years and this last year has been a very difficult year. As a family never once were we anxious about the care mum had received we knew with confidence she was not only looked after but loved. This was a great comfort to us.

My mother has been a resident for 18/12months. The transition from home to care has been much easier because of the dedicated care given to her and us as a family. The staff are always welcoming and during the pandemic have kept us informed of policies re-visiting. They have done a tremendous job during
pandemic keeping themselves and residents safe. It has been a great comfort for us as a family to know mum was safe.

My brother-in-law lived at Emmaus House in Harrogate for 3 years, until he passed away in August last year. He was very well cared for in the home and felt very comfortable there. He was a very private man and this was respected by the staff but he also enjoyed mixing with other residents in the lounge
when he wanted to.

I visited so many care homes, after reading supposedly excellent reviews, but left them all with feelings of despair. My husband and I visited Emmaus one Sunday afternoon - we were met by a lovely, welcoming young man, who gave us a tour around. He'd worked there a good few years, always a good sign,
and had a great sense of humour, I could see him and my mum getting on immediately. Mum was a Christian, so the Christian input was important, but the things that thrilled me were - they actively worked out who mum was likely to be able to make friends with and introduced her to them, they sat together at mealtimes. She was included. Mum loved puzzles and games - these were daily activities! No longer was she alone, left watching either Disney films or sport with strangers. She was treated with respect - I needed that for her. The staff were lovely and were led excellently from the top - so important. Mum has recently passed away but I would wholeheartedly recommend Emmaus House.

All staff are kind, caring and professional, nothing is too much trouble and they always go out of their way to help. When visiting mum they make you feel like part of their family and they have taken time to get to know mum and are always attentive to her needs. Mum always appears clean and tidy and
I love the way that they varnish Mum's nails and put her jewellery on for her. It warms my heart that mum is happy and settled and she told me that she likes her new house. The home and mum’s room is clean and tidy and warm and welcoming.

Chrissie

Chrissie Medway-Steel

Job Title: Registered Manager

Joined: 2020

Having started aged 16 as a care assistant in a care home, Chrissie has extensive experience in the care sector. Over the years she has worked in a number of settings, including a home for those with disabilities and acquired brain injuries and a day centre for those with learning needs. Most recently she has managed care homes for older people. She is excited to be leading the team at Emmaus House, where the Christian faith is central to life at home.


Chrissie has two children. When not at work, she and her family enjoy trips out to the North Yorkshire coast, dabbling in rock pools and tucking into fish and chips for tea.
