Armstrong House care home in Bensham, near Gateshead, is a modern, purpose-built home with a friendly and compassionate team who provide exceptional residential, nursing and specialised dementia care, as well as sensitive end of life care.

Each en-suite bedroom is light, airy and comfortable. The home has wonderful facilities including cosy lounges and dining rooms, plus a hair and nail salon. The beautifully landscaped grounds have raised flower beds, patios and lawn areas - they’re the perfect place to sit and chat with visitors or get involved in gardening.

The team works with residents and their families to design care and activity plans tailored to each person's unique needs and preferences, and the talented chefs also create bespoke menus.

Armstrong House looked after my dad for the last three months of his life. Their care was exceptional, their kindness and compassion was endless. Dad was cared for with skill, professionalism and dignity, he was a person not just another patient. Every member of the team from the manager down truly
focus on the well-being of their residents. Their kindness to me was also amazing, in the last week of dad’s life they looked after me like I was one of the team. Finally, the staff all lined the road from my dad’s hearse to drive past... a sign of respect which I will always treasure.

The care and dedication of ALL the staff, to not only ensure all residents receive the best of care, but the family and friends too, particularly in these unprecedented times, is beyond imagination. My aunt resided there for almost 2.5 years where the staff made sure everything she needed was undertaken.
The support I received was second to none and I cannot thank the whole team for their truly amazing dedication to making every resident feel special. I will be forever in their debt. The organisation should recognise such an amazing team.

My Mum was a resident in Armstrong House for almost two years before she died recently. She was treated with so much care and tenderness. It was a comfort to know how well looked after she was particularly towards the end. I would like to express my gratitude to all the staff who work so hard to
keep our loved ones safe and happy. In these very difficult times, they have been absolutely amazing.

My wife has just returned home from Armstrong House, which was originally for two weeks because of work being carried out at her home. Because the work had not been carried out fully, she was allowed to stay for a further week. This was greatly appreciated by myself and my wife. The staff were brilliant
in their jobs and cared for my wife with great compassion. Nothing was a bother for the staff who cheered my wife up greatly and took very good care of her while there. I would wholeheartedly recommend this care home to anyone requiring the best and utmost special care and attention. THANK YOU TO ALL STAFF.

I had my mum and dad both in together over the last 2 years. Found the level of care to be excellent with some carers going beyond what you would expect in terms of care.
I felt that the home was very well run and that the manager was an exceptional lady in terms of leadership and also in her social
skills relating to my and my wife.
In all my visits which must have been in the region of 200 visits, I never found my parents neglected or saw any signs of residents being treated badly.
The good work of the home helped me enormously in how I felt about my parents' deteriorating health. I could relax because they were cared for and genuinely loved.

Anyone thinking of using Armstrong House for their loved one, just do it! My Mam has recently passed away but spent 7 wonderful years there after suffering a life changing stroke. The dedication of the staff is second to none and their treatment of my Mam was wonderful. Because my Mam was non verbal
after her stroke I worried that she might become lonely but I didn't count on the staff treating her as if she was family and including her in everything. If I had a question they answered it, a problem, they solved it. Without Armstrong House my Mam's last 7 years would not have been filled with fun, laughter and so much love 24 hours a day. As a family we can't thank the management and staff, past and present, for the excellent treatment they showed my Mam.

My mother spent the last 18 months of her life at Armstrong House. She was registered blind and suffered from dementia. From the first time I walked into the building, I could sense she would be safe and well in this environment. On every occasion I visited my mother she was spotlessly clean and always
well presented. Dietary requirements were always met. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble to the staff to ensure a pleasant cheerful surrounding.
Visitors are made equally welcome and staff would give and encourage feedback from family. As a family, we miss our mother greatly but we have the comfort of knowing she was well cared for by all the staff at Armstrong House and for that, we will be eternally grateful.

Management was approachable and efficient. Staff caring, friendly and listen to requests and act on this. My Uncle received the best care and the staff always asked if there was anything we needed, especially as he was dying. They changed him often, and bedding and made him as comfortable as possible.

My Dad was only in the care of Armstrong House for 4 weeks before he passed away, and he was treated with dignity and great care from the moment he arrived until his passing. My mother's Fast Track discharge from hospital necessitated an emergency admission to a nursing home and I was so lucky to find Armstrong House during my research online. Living in London and the urgency of the situation meant that I didn't have time to visit the home prior to my mother being taken
there but the welcome she got and the care provided could not be faulted. The managers were a breath of fresh air and, together with the nursing staff, ensured that my mother's final days were spent in a remarkable and caring environment where she was treated with dignity. Thank you all.

My Mum was in Armstrong House for approximately four months and I can honestly say that this was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. There was always fantastic nursing staff and carers on hand at all times, and I was kept well informed of everything that was going on. All of the staff from
management to cleaners were all caring and compassionate. My Mum was always treated with care and respect. I have no problem recommending Armstrong House to anyone who is looking for a nursing home for their loved one. I cannot speak highly enough about them. In my opinion, if this was a restaurant it would be awarded a Michelin 5 star rating.

My mam never wanted to go into a home! After a 2 week assessment, she didn't want to leave! She felt safe and well cared for. For my part the staff and facilities were excellent. My mam was treated with kindness, respect and compassion during her residency. She took a bad turn on 27/12/19. She was looked
after and nursed. Sadly she passed away on New Year's Eve. I would like to thank everyone at Armstrong House for their part in my mam's care and welfare and made her last year's happy ones.

My mam had been a resident in Armstrong House for the last two and a half years until she passed away last week.
I can honestly say that this is a fantastic place for anyone to be looked after. The residents are all treated with the utmost respect and dignity and are extremely well looked after. The
staff know the residents so well and genuinely care for them. The care is of a high standard and the communication with the family was great.
There are two great activity coordinators who organise a wide variety of activities.
My mam loved all the staff and during her last week there it was obvious that the staff thought the world of her too. The carers were amazing caring for both my mam and the family during her final week there - we were so impressed by their compassion.
The manager has set high standards and it really shows - she runs a fantastic care home. Thank you.

When looking for a care home for my twin brother Armstrong House stood out. This first impression was borne out by the standard of care he received. In particular, the attitude of the staff was at all times warm and caring towards my brother who clearly felt he was loved and respected. In summary, our

My lovely mam was admitted here in July after spending 6 weeks in a hospice. Unfortunately, this turned out to be the final 6 days of my mams life. Right from the moment, we entered Armstrong House we were made to feel welcome and listened to by the fantastic manager. We felt very reassured that the
care my mam would receive would be caring, compassionate and individualised and it absolutely was. This is a large and very busy home but feels calm and under control at all times even though staff never stop for a minute. I can't praise the care my mam received enough ...it was exceptional. The manager and end of life champion amazing staff nurse attended mams funeral even though they had only known mam 6 days. Thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts. You do an amazing job.

Job Title: Home Manager

I’m a Registered Nurse with over 25 years of experience in care home management.


I’ve achieved my Level 4 in Management training and am also a qualified mental health first aider.


I have experience working for large care providers and care homes, including looking after a multi-site home that I helped to turn around from a Requires Improvement rating to Good in all areas within six months. I joined Care UK after hearing great things and wanting to become part of the team.


My role is centred around making sure residents and families are happy, and my favourite part of my job is spending time with residents and their relatives. In this role, it’s important to be open, friendly and outgoing. I believe the Home Manager needs to be a people person, have an open-door policy and always be approachable.


As a team, we support each other like a family through good times and bad. I feel proud of what we do when residents are happy in the home.


I like reading and doing crafts when I’m not working. I also enjoy spending time with my family.
