Ashfield Court Care Home is situated in the Forest Hall area of Newcastle. It is within easy walking distance of local shops and amenities and is well served by public transport.

Many people who visit Ashfield Court comment on the warm and homely feel they get the minute they walk in and are greeted by friendly, smiling staff.

It has a people-centred approach and staff like to get to know their residents properly, not just on the surface.

New residents are asked to fill in a ‘This is your life’ book, so Ashfield Court can learn about their personal history – where they went to school, their career, their hobbies, likes and dislikes, and so on. The families are asked to complete if the residents are unable to do so.

With this information, the home can interact with residents in a much more meaningful way. It also helps that the majority of staff and residents are from this area of Newcastle.

There is a wide range of activities for residents but a fairly recent development has been an attachment to the Hen Power project, which gives them access to many arts and crafts activities. Ashfield was chosen because artwork by residents went on exhibition in Newcastle.

A local church organises tea and coffee mornings. Ashfield is the venue for people to sit, have meals and chat with residents and find out about the home.

A Friends of Ashfield group has been set up. It is run by the residents – Ashfield is applying for Lottery funding through Hen Power.

The residents regularly go out into the community and the community comes to them. Once a month there’s a trip out for a pub lunch for residents and their families. Local schools often come in for sing-alongs.

There is a secure garden, which is used regularly by the residents, sometimes for arts and crafts activities, weather permitting.

My Mum has been resident at Ashfield Court for 16 months now and I would like to thank you all for the care and attention you give. I come to visit from Devon as much as I can and it is a great comfort to me to see Mum so well cared for.

The staff were absolutely amazing with my beautiful mam. They treated her with dignity and respect, they encouraged clients to join in with activities and also did special things like karaoke on a sunny summers day. They laughed and joked with her and always met her needs.
I would totally recommend
this home. It was lovely and homely, due to the lovely staff. Thank you all so much for taking care of our mam.

My mother took up residence in 2015. She has vascular dementia and Alzheimer's. She was also profoundly deaf.
Over a period of 2 1/2 years, she deteriorated until her recent death.
The staff were magnificent. Even when mother was difficult she was treated with care and compassion. As her condition
worsened the carers continued to encourage her and treated her with good humour and tenderness. They were excellent!

My husband has been in Ashfield Court since Oct 2015. He has settled well, and seems to be happy enough. The staff are very attentive and I feel that my husband is being well cared for. I struggled at first not having my husband with me and I was constantly on the phone to Ashfield. I felt I was being
a nuisance but the staff welcomed my call at all times and insisted that I called whenever I wanted to. All the staff are friendly and happy to talk at all times.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.175)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.175) out of 10 for Ashfield Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.714 for Ashfield Court is calculated as follows: ( (65 Excellents x 5) + (15 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 84 Ratings = 4.714

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.461 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ashfield Court is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.2 = 0.761

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
