I had to place my godmother in respite care pre-surgery due to falls at home. How lucky to find The Lodge Care Home had a room and within hours she was safe, an incredibly positive, professional and technically competent company with high standards. Genuinely caring staff who go 'over and above' all
expectations to make her comfortable and supported (and they provide fun!). The Lodge has a real buzz about the place and being December it is like a winter wonderland beautifully decorated. Never a dull moment with all the range of activities on offer. What a gem in the heart of South Shields.

My father has been at The Lodge for almost 2 years now. He thinks of the staff as his family. The home is very clean the staff are very friendly and nothing seems to phase them. My father is very well cared for. The staff from domestic, maintenance, carers, management and administration are all caring
and love the residents. I am extremely pleased with the care my father is given.

Totally in awe of how amazing our visit to The Lodge was on Friday.
It was so clean (and didn’t smell of anything I’d have expected - it was all fresh and clean).
The residents’ doors all have names on and all staff we saw addressed everyone gently by name. All the staff were respectful and kind
to anyone we met as we were being shown to the room. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff- we asked for a vase and they went to find one yet they were clearly busy. The resident we were visiting was clearly well cared for.
Thank you to all of the staff.

I cannot speak more highly of the genuine care and concern shown when my Dad was failing in health, particularly the lady who explained her concerns to me or brother and liaised with the GP to ensure end-of-life arrangements and medication was discussed and put in place. Dad died (quite surprisingly)
shortly within a few days without pain and surrounded by caring staff. Their support in his last days and to us was so caring. Dad enjoyed his time, treating his stay like a hotel. The strict Covid rules robbed us of precious years and his 80th birthday with only me being allowed in his room.

From day one, since my mother entered The Lodge, my mother and my wife have been treated with dignity and respect. The management and her team have always been kind and respectful to my mother, who has given them a difficult time sometimes. I and my wife are kept informed of any new developments concerning
my mother, and any concerns are dealt with as quickly as possible.,

Since my mother-in-law entered The Lodge, she's been treated with care, support and consideration under very difficult circumstances as my mother-in-law has, at times, been very challenging, but their care and support have never wavered. The staff have also been kind and supportive to my husband and
myself. The place is well run and very clean with hardworking and very pleasant staff. I've nothing but praise for them for doing a very difficult job.

I came to The Lodge residential care home for short-term care after I came out of hospital with a broken ankle. I just stayed for just over two weeks and I can honestly say hand on heart, everyone in The Lodge could not do enough for you. You only had to press your call button and they would be with
you in next to no time. Always willing to help you with whatever you need help with. When entering The Lodge, my first impression was it looked like a first-class hotel. The decor was lovely, so bright and appealing. I have no hesitation but to recommend it. Yours sincerely.

My mother was only at The Lodge Residential Care Home for a short time. The care and support given not only to Mam but to myself and my husband were immeasurable. The manager and her staff were all amazing. As my home is in Australia, I obviously was worried about my mam's care ad failing health, but
the manager and her staff made me feel completely confident that Mam would be cared for. Sadly, Mam passed away, yet the staff have contacted me on several occasions since with offers of support.

As my mother was 92 and quite independent, until recently, the change for her is/was traumatic. However, after three episodes of illness during the night it became obvious that independent living was beyond her abilities. The worries of nighttime accidents and illness were a constant problem for relatives.
The Lodge has treated Mam well and she is still in a period of adaption. The relief of the family from the constant care provided is a source of comfort.

After rapid illness and a month in hospital my mother was admitted to The Lodge Residential Care Home for respite care. The staff were very welcoming and did their best to care for our mother, encouraging her to be more independent while also listening and responding to us regarding her needs. A very
caring attitude from all staff and management. The staff were always easy to talk to and were happy to contact the GP and other medical professionals, if we had any concerns. Our mam responded well to the staff and knew she was being looked after, even through serious bouts of confusion and other challenging behaviour she got the best possible attention and we always felt supported by the staff who only wanted the best for her. Mam has now moved on to other urgent care but we are grateful to the team at The Lodge Residential Care Home and thanked them for their continued support and kindness shown to us all.

Providing first-class care and support for my mother who has Alzheimer's. The home provides a clean and safe environment during this difficult time, due to ongoing covid in homes. Although visiting is restricted, the home keeps the family updated on how my mother is coping in the home.

My father-in-law has been a resident in The Lodge for three months and is very happy. Standards and care are very high. The safety is excellent, and we, the family, are kept well informed of his condition. When we visit, we are given the warmest welcome and all the present Covid tests, etc. The staff
are very pleasant and friendly. We feel very confident that Dad is safe, happy, content and cared for; he loves the companionship, food and feeling of home.

Current Review Score: 8.9 (8.942)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.9 (8.942) out of 10 for The Lodge Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.765 for The Lodge Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (55 Excellents x 5) + (10 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 68 Ratings = 4.765

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.177 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Lodge Residential Care Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.577

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

At the age of 16 years I started my career as a cadet nurse at the Cumberland Infirmary Carlisle. I qualified as a nurse in 1977, then progressed in my studies to become an orthopaedic nurse in 1979. I spent many years working for the NHS until my second child was born in 1985.

I then transferred to the independent sector and worked as a nurse specialising in Dementia Care and Staff Training & Development.

I enrolled with Northumbria University and achieved my Certificate in education and a Degree in Teaching Training and Education. This provided a pathway for me to spend 15 years training Care Home Managers to the standards specified by Governing authorities.

In my capacity of Training Director for two National Care Home Companies, I travelled the Country and Managed Government Training contracts with a national team of 20 trainers and educators.

In 2011 I decided to spend a lot of missed quality time with my family and resigned from my post. Two years after I joined the Independent Sector to work local as a Care Home Manager. This I have been doing for the past 12 years and hope to continue for years to come
