Grangewood is a bright and welcoming care home offering gold standard residential care for older people, including those living with dementia. The purpose-built care home is set in the village of Shiney Row, close to Houghton-le-Spring in Tyne and Wear.

The home has a real community feel and is close to the local village library, medical centre and various churches. There's also a post office and a pub on the doorstep, and good transport links, which all helps residents to retain their independence.

All of the bedrooms at Grangewood have en-suite facilities and are stylishly furnished. Your loved one is welcome to bring their own treasured possessions and items of furniture to help them to feel more at home.

My partner entered Grangewood when she was very ill, I couldn't look after her anymore because her illness started to deteriorate. Her stay in Grangewood was very short as she passed away recently. All I can say now, her stay was pleasant and comfortable til her life came to an end. Many thanks to all
the staff for their dedication and efforts.

My dad has recently moved to Grangewood care home, and the staff have been great, and he has settled in brilliantly. His room is bright, airy and clean. The care home has a lovely feel when you walk in it - clean and bright.

Very pleased with the way my friend was accepted into Grangewood. Everyone has made her so welcome. Her newly decorated room is beautiful and she now feels it is more like home. She enjoys the company of fellow residents and enjoys her outings with the entertainment team.

Grangewood is a happy, lively place to call home. Every resident is treated with respect and receives love and first-class care. My husband has been here for eight months, from day one we were accepted as a family member. When a loved one goes into care, it is horrendous for the family. If it had not
been for the love and care, not just for my husband but also for our family, I don't think we would have coped at all. The teamwork 24/7 is amazing. The carers work so hard and give their all every shift.

The care home experience is new to me and my family. However, we have found Grangewood Care Home to be well above the standards we expected.
Most especially the care all the staff provide, from cleaners and cooks to carers etc.
Being allowed to visit at any time of day helps to organise my time,
rather than being restricted to a certain few hours each day.
Any problem/question I have, if not answered immediately, is followed up as soon as possible.
The home is always exceptionally clean. Food provided very much to my mother's high standards. Lots of variety, the residents also have a say in what types of food they wish to eat. Activities are full-on, especially now Covid restrictions have been slightly lifted. My mother thoroughly enjoys her outings and themed events.
I feel very lucky that we have Grangewood looking after my mother. I can't thank them enough for all they do.

My mother arrived at Grangewood in November 2021 after a long stay in hospital. Her room was newly decorated, fresh, clean and extremely comfortable. From the beginning, the staff have been extremely supportive to both my mother and our family throughout her stay. All the staff were professional with
their approach and nothing was ever too much. At first, as a family we were apprehensive of using a care home, however, Grangewood was recommended to me for its outstanding approach to all. The home and the staff lived up to my high expectations and made me feel at home and at ease, knowing my mother would be cared for.
My mother enjoyed the activities that were provided especially the recent Valentine's lunch and the Christmas lunch, which I also attended.
Over the past week, I have spent more time with my mother by her bedside, however, this was not an issue for the care staff, they were always there if I was in need of anything, even just a cup of tea.
I can't thank the staff enough.

I have to commend Grangewood and all the staff for the care and support they have provided to both residents and also their families during the difficult time we have experienced throughout Covid-19. They have ensured that all Government guidelines have been met whilst also taking care of the needs
of their residents and offering family guidance around visits and being able to see loved ones. My dad has been in Grangewood for approximately 7 years and has great affection for his caregivers and the support they provide him. Well done to all the team at Grangewood, you are amazing.

My father has now been a resident in Grangewood Care Home since June 2021. Prior to this he had been receiving care at home for a multitude of conditions which have left him requiring full-time care. Since going into Grangewood Care Home we have seen a huge improvement in my Dad. The general care has
improved physically and he now has his dignity back. He is treated by all the care staff with respect, warmth and his needs are priority. The staff explores every avenue to get to know about him, his past, his likes and dislikes and his family, they welcome all his visitors. My dad has regained his self-respect due to their care. They have also been extremely supportive of my family, in particular of my mother (they have been married for 65 years) who visits every day. I have only praise and gratitude for them in the work they do and the care they have for all their residents. All of his physical, emotional, medical and care needs are met.

My mother has been receiving full-time care since Oct 2020 following a deterioration in her dementia meaning home care was no longer possible. The entire team at Grangewood were understanding and sympathetic to the situation and did everything possible to make the move into care as worry free as possible.
The communications and updates have been excellent and the family are confident that my mother is receiving the best possible care from the entire team who display compassion and understanding in everything they do. The necessary controls to prevent any virus from entering the home are excellent and effective and the staff does everything possible with window visits etc to allow the best possible patient/family contacts. Regular updates are received from the staff regarding any changes to medications or health conditions and the local G.P. surgery doctors give the highest praise to the quality of care the home provides. I would recommend the Grangewood to anyone requiring care for a loved one.

I do not feel well-placed to perform this review as for the majority of the time my Mam has been in this home the lockdown has been in place. My Mam wanted to come into care because her physical needs were such that the care she had at home (four times a day) was inadequate and my time with her was
taken up with essential matters. We hoped that once all her physical needs were met she and I could concentrate on fun and keeping up with her many friends and interests. Through nobody’s fault, this has not been possible. She is hesitant to join groups with people she doesn’t know and therefore has not often joined in with activities. The thing she was looking forward to was some one-to-one craft sessions. I must say that the staff have been very caring to Mam, particularly when she has been ill. They have been vigilant and kept me informed. I think it is difficult for staff and for me that her mental state can’t be assessed at present as we don’t know what the changes are due to.

Mam entered Grangewood after her dementia required her to be looked after. Staff were very kind and made the transition from our care to theirs with compassion and understanding. She had a nice room, always kept clean. Staff were patient, always treated Mam with respect, kindness and dignity. Staff
were very helpful, cheerful and always willing to spend a few extra minutes when needed with Mam. During my Mam’s stay, we don't think she could have been anywhere safer or more comfortable. Staff encouraged her to join residents in the dining room at meal times, pamper days and get her hair blow dried. I visited Mam daily it was always clean and fresh and welcomed with open arms. Staff are attentive, kind and obviously work as a team. Management staff kept me updated on Mam's health and condition and were so approachable and caring. After seven months Mam’s condition deteriorated and Mam passed away January this year, her end of life treatment was excellent with brilliant support throughout.

My sister and I were very pleased to find Grangewood after looking at several inferior places in the region. My mother seems to have settled in fine (she's been here 10months) though her memory and awareness seem to be fading- to be expected at the age of 89! I visit from Glasgow, where I live, about
once a month and am always welcomed and encouraged whilst here.

I’m an experienced Nurse and Home Manager and I’m passionate about delivering the highest standards of care and quality of life for the people we care for. I believe that great care is about going beyond what is expected to make a difference in residents’ lives.


I also think it’s important to take a caring approach to colleagues, supporting them to do their best work and to fulfil their potential in the workplace. It’s our people who make all the difference and help us to deliver superb care, so if they’re happy, our residents are too.


I’m very proud of Grangewood’s strong links with the local community and I’m always keen to enhance these so that residents can continue to feel a part of local life and enjoy a lovely lifestyle. One of my favourite parts of the day is chatting with residents and listening to their life stories. There’s so much we can learn from the older generation.
